NY Times: Joint Gore-Pelosi Event on Climate Change Canceled

As they claw and scratch to round up enough votes to pass a climate bill, House Democrats had a seeming ace in the hole: former Vice President Al Gore.

But a planned news conference with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Gore, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, was quietly scrapped with just a few hours notice.

The cancellation of the news conference did not go unnoticed by Republicans in the House.

Representative John Boehner, the Ohio Republican and House minority leader, commented on Thursday that it seemed Mr. Gore “was disinvited quickly.”

And, underscoring how controversial the former vice president’s views can be, Mr. Boehner said Mr. Gore’s policies would lead to higher electrical costs, and raised the memory of an unpopular energy tax Mr. Gore had supported in the early days of the Clinton administration.

Mr. Boehner also said he did not believe that Democrats had yet secured enough votes to pass the measure Friday.

It was feared that having two publicity hogs the size of Gore and Pelosi in the same room would suck so much of the oxygen out of the atmosphere that the temperature inside would climb to several hundred degrees Celsius and incinerate the press corps.

Gore and his Generation Investment Management Ltd. partners are heavily invested in carbon credit paper. Cap-and-trade will revive world carbon trading and give Gore a captive U.S. market to sell these certificates. It will also artificially raise the price of fossil fuels so alternatives can become more competitive. The “green” is all about the greenback.
