I just watched the classic movie "High Noon" (again). Gary Cooper played a brave sheriff who brought law and order to his town. As one woman said, "He made it safe for a decent woman to walk down the street". A recently released outlaw was coming back to town on the noon train to deliver vengeance against the sheriff who put him away. His gang of three arrived early to help their leader take out the sheriff.

No one here has asserted that an inability to communicate is a requirement for a conservative choice for president. To characterize it as such is misleading at best.
I’ve listened to many interviews/speeches of hers and had no trouble whatsoever understanding her very conservative message. Millions of other Americans stood with her to give John McCain a fighting chance, responding positively to her conservative message.
That she is not a spit-shined politician with “soaring rhetoric” is not her Achilles Heel; that is her strength. The sooner some get that through their thick, urbane skulls, the sooner we can get on with the work we have to do.
Palin cannot win on the votes of small town conservatives alone.
Millions of conservatives are not enough.
She would need well over 60 million votes.
Here we go again, counterpunch screaming at the top of his lungs about how worthless Sarah Palin is. As I’ve stated before, it’s clear you don’t like her and prefer a more elitist politician.
You, like the liberal democrats, fear Sarah Palin. It’s obvious from your posts that you are afraid she might get the nomination. Quit being such a pussy and start encouraging people like Sarah to enter the arena and bring the values of normal folks to Washington. If she wants to be President, let her run and fail on her own. What possible harm can there be from having more people like Sarah Palin on the national scene?
“John McCain made a bad choice for his running mate”
What color is the sky in your world today?
Governor Palin is the only reason Juan “My Friends...” McCain didn’t have his moderate a$$ completely back-handed to him—sliced, diced & double-dipped ...
counterpunch, you sound like the Democrats who called Reagan an “amiable dolt” and a “dunce.” They’ve pulled the same stuff with every GOP candidate, going back to Eisenhower.
When McCain picked Sarah, we were all saying, “Who?” She was saying, “Me?” K-K-Katie ambushed her, so you’re ready to drink the NBC/CBS/ABC kool-aid ... and Obama can “speak intelligently”. (”Senator, tell us: (dramatic pause) When did you first learn you could actually walk on water?” “Oh gee, Kate—age 3 I think.”) Jayzus!
Uh, er, hmmm, um—that’s, that’s, uh, a problem.
Once a month Sarah gets peckish and hunts bears with a switch, she would butter Zero’s neck-tie in debate, as she did with Joltin’ Joe, and she’s got a couple years to sharpen her teeth. And they know it.
We will continue to see attacks from the demo-dupes on all channels, but here? These negative vibes, man ... always with these negative vibes.
The choice between Palin or 0bama is a false dichotomy.
I’d rather pick someone else entirely who is not a hollow media creation or hand-picked by Juan McCain.
You are reading from the same page as someone like Peggy Noonan who wants Palin to sound “substantive.” Obama never sounds “substantive,” sometimes even when he is reading from a script.
Whom He calls, He equips.
I don't know what your point is in injecting Bush and McCain into a discussion about Palin, although you apparently desire to equally diminish them all.
You seem quite bitter, I hope you're able to get beyond that.
Vlad the Impaler used to brag that a naked virgin with a golden cup could pass unmolested from one end of his kingdom to the other.
I guess he made it safe for both decent and indecent women to walk down the street. ;)
All she has to do is something NO leftist can do,
speak genuinely from her core beliefs.
If a leftist did that, he’d get 10% of the vote.
And when you get someone genuine on stage with a typical leftist pol, the difference is going to be clear.
This is what cracks me up about the Palin haters.
Since the convention, it has always been a comparison between her and ZerØ. McCain lost the election, Not Sarah. Hell, McCain only got the votes he got - because of her - not in spite of her. And any honest analysis of the qualifications of the two - Palin and ZerØ - would show Sarah to have far more executive experience than the Pretender occupying the WH.
What the hell has Obama ever run? Nothing! ZerØ, Zip, Nada, None. And it shows. How many Czar's are we up to now?
Someone asked you previously, whom your GOP cocktail crowd wants us to vote for. So far I haven't read a response (maybe it's further down). Please tell us who the next anointed RINO is going to be.
Like who? But whatever Palin’s chances, you are tone-deaf if you don’t realize that Palin is the best stump-speaker in either party, except maybe some like Jesse Jackson. (yes, I know what Jackson is, but he can rouse a crowd.)
It WAS funny though, that who the REAL combatants were became evident very quickly.
The press attacked Palin, and all the comparisons were made between Palin and Obama, not McCain and Obama.
Had McCain not been on the ticket, it would have been closer, but the “voting for the cool black guy” crowd would have still won.
:)
Well said!
We’re definitely hungry out here for someone with the WILL to fight.
I think GW’s Ivy Leaguer background made him too “collegial” to actually stand up for what was right.
I seem to recall McCain inching ahead in the polling thanks to the addition of her to the ticket. Then he blew it by mishandling the economic news, rushing back to D.C. and embracing the stimulus. Polls plunged. Sarah didn’t lose that race. The darlin’ of the elitist GOP establishment did. It’s laughable anyone would attempt to imply it was Palin who lost to Obama when she wasn’t the one setting the campaign agenda and response. To the contrary, McCain’s staff worked to silence or sabotage her.
McCain did everything possible to lose the election. He almost blew his plan up, though, when he selected her as VP.
Again, like WHO? Reminding me of the story told about Lincoln. Wade came in to complain about McClellan and demand that Lincoln fire him and get someone else. Who?said Lincoln. Anyone said Wade. Well, said Lincoln, anyone will do for you but I must have someone. Right now, after Sanford’s self-destruction, Palin is the only one standing. Let’s see what she can do. More than that, let’s see what Obama does.
One wonders what kind of effect the Palin's would have had on the Michigan results.
Mediocre folks don't become governor or senator unless the party apparatus or a pile of money is behind them. Think Biden or Kerry or Obama. (Obama had a mediocre record, some rhetorical skill, and buckets of money and a big organization behind him (and I'm not taking about the DNC).)
Sarah Palin made it in the face of party opposition, and she doesn't have a pile of money.
I smell jealousy.
So I guess I just have to ask...Who is your guy/gal???
Are their initials R.P.???
I’m just asking...Because it would clear up your position...
Or, and here is a safety net...
Is it someone you think will come along in the next couple of years to lead the way???
My opinion??? Oh, glad you ask...
I believe the person who is anointed to be “it” in 2012, will be a sacrificial lamb...Just like Bob Dole...
Unless something drastic happens that cannot be spun away, We will be stuck with Barack Hussien Obama till a cold blustery day in January 2017...
Sorry to be such a naysayer...But the Republican party leadership has failed to develop a bullpen of candidates that can compete...Sure they are pretty conservative, but it just didn’t deliver...
And where are the pictures to prove it?
But since you asked; she does look pretty darn good in a flight suit.
I’m wondering why you have a picture of Sarah Palin with a rifle on her shoulder on your profile page. Forget what you posted as your fakery at FR?
And what Soros-like group foisted her on Alaska? The Governor of Alaska is a self-made success.
whos next in line party
Yes, and Sarah is definitely NOT considered the next-in-line by the party big-wigs. She's been applauded by the grass-roots, not the RNC. You've got this argument backwards. Next in line would be the other contenders from the last presidential primary, i.e. Romney and the rest, not Sarah.
She already lost against 0bama last year
She didn't run against Obama, McCain did. There isn't a separate count for the VP race.
Palin has a more accomplishments than Obama, being a governor means she couldn't vote 'present'.
Having every single sentence perfect isn't a sine qua non for a politician. And Sarah is a hell of a better speaker than Bush. You are focusing on a few bad spots. She's a whole lot better off teleprompter than the Obamanation. He can't handle that at all. And we'll probably never know how much worse Obama is with combative interviewers.
McCain made a bad choice for VP? On what basis do you say that? Money flooded in after he picked Palin. The crowds showed up to hear her speak. That's what a VP candidate is supposed to provide, excitement and support in the base.
Wow. That's going to come as a complete surprise to many who know that she fought her way up through the ranks in Alaska from the Wasilla PTA through the mayor's office to the ultimate pinnacle of power in the state, the governor's office, single-handedly and against the good ol' boy network then centered around Frank Murkowski.
Which makes her that much more appealing to me.
One of the most fascinating things about her, is the way the left AND those on the elitist right go after her.
It reminds me so much of the way Ronald Reagan was treated in the 70's and 80's.
I also seem to remember her being somewhat muzzled by the McCain campaign. Had she been able to speak from the heart on such issues as say the global warming scam instead of deferring to McCain, she may have pushed the old guy into the White House.
NOBODY that watched the VP debate objectively or watched/attended any of her stump speeches or even casually reviews her career in politics, can honestly call her a lightweight.
I am sick and tired of Washington insiders and ivy league idiots in Washington. Quite frankly, we need some good old fashion common sense in DC, not someone who “sounds good” or comes from a “good family”. We’ve been there done that too many times and keep ending up with liberal lites, or even worse, elitist candidates that can’t connect with the people!
I am open to other contenders and 2012 is a long way from now. But Palin is the ONLY one I see at present. For me, she is the most exciting Conservative candidate since Reagan.
What you smell is ‘agitprop’ in full bloom. Confusion is the only thing that can save the democrat party with the current anti-American output their pushing down voters’ throats. Agitprops are sent out to pretend to be conservative, pretend ot be Republican, pretend to be anything needed to give them credulity as they spread as much confusion as their prick selves can spread. [prick = little irritating nettle, nothing more; see counterpunch.]
I don’t have a person.
It is really too early to jump on any bandwagon.
One person I would like to see run is Newt Gingrich.
But he also has a history of always being “about” to get in without ever actually getting in.
That doesn’t mean he is my ‘guy’ mind you.
He is simply someone I think may have the potential to at least raise the bar, elevate the discourse, and shape the debate in a positive way, even if he doesn’t prove to be the right person ultimately to carry the message forward.
I’m not a Ron Paul nut, if that is what you are trying to insinuate.
I think it is high time conservatives stop settling.
We’ve lost it all. We have nothing left to lose.
If now isn’t the time to put our foot down and demand better leadership than what we’ve currently got, then when the hell will it ever be?
I’ve been critical of Palin, John Boner, Eric Can’tor, Mitch McConnell, Michael Steele. They are all mediocre at best. We can do better than all of them.
But we won’t, so long as they have their apologists and cheerleaders.
It’s time we have some leadership that proves itself to us, instead of us carrying the water for them, and making excuses for their shortcomings.
We do have real leaders out there. Mike Pence comes to mind.
Perhaps not president just yet, but he ought to be the Republican leader in the House. Speaker of the House, to be exact.
It can happen, but only if we demand more from Republicans we elect.
Stop propping up clowns and demanding that America accept them.
It doesn’t work that way.
If we can’t cut our losses now, then when will we ever?
It’s time for a whole new Republican party.
No more RINOs, and no more clowns and halfwit bumblers either. It’s time to free ourselves from the burden of propping them up. All of them.
Let them prove themselves for once, and then see who is left standing.
their = they’re
And neither was Reagan, that B-film actor. Until we let him try, that is.
You've been making a bunch of high-sounding arguments here, like 'the long tradition of American statesmen'. I'd like to know if you consider Woodrow Wilson or Teddy Roosevelt in that history. I think we should avoid any long tradition that includes such big-government types.
What other long tradition of small-government American statesmen are you thinking of? How about one that includes that B-actor Ronald Reagan? Or the one that includes the backwoods hick Andrew Jackson? Or how about the do-nothing Calvin Coolidge? I think Governor Palin would be ok in that company, rather than anybody labeled a 'statesman' by the historians.
“the Democrats will have all the Republican deputies out of the way (Ensign, Sanford, Gingrich, Romney if they can find an angle). Sheriff Palin will be standing alone on the edge of town”
Me thinks you have been reading too much Wonder Woman, she don’t need no deputies, she don’t need no posse, she’s gonna take care of those hombres solo. I like this better http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/daltons.htm , the sheriff, deputies and armed citizenry (an analogy of course) teaching the Democrats a lesson that will be remembered as long as the Crusades.
The McCain/Palin ticket got the fewest votes of any presidential ticket since 2000.
That smells like a loser to me.
You can’t blame McCain.
If Palin was more popular than 0bama, more people would have voted for her ticket than his.
End of story.
If she hadn’t been hand-picked by McCain to be his successor, Palin would not have the support Choir she does.
You are all being played for fools by John McCain.
The RNC tried really hard to create a Sarah Palin mythology, and they failed.
The reason she doesn’t have support now among them is because of her embarrassing performance.
The woman can’t speak and is shockingly unknowledgeable. Trying to pretend otherwise is intellectually dishonest, and you’re not even fooling yourself.
The majority of Americans aren’t going to vote for someone who inspires so little confidence in her leadership qualities as she does. She just don’t got it.
And she’s not worth the uphill battle and inevitable defeat that comes with trying to push her towards higher office.
Thinkin’ Reagan would fail your scrutiny if applied equally.
The thing about agitprop previously was that it was difficult to respond to. The agitproper had a bullhorn that you couldn't shout down, or spent money sending leaflets that you couldn't afford to respond to.
Here, we can respond. And I'm finding myself encouraged by how many folks think like I do. Which is not what the agitproper is trying to have happen.
Also, I'm finding it educational to build counter-arguments, to pick apart the agitprop and show it's falsity.
This is also why Gov Palin needs to stay somewhat in the limelight. All the arguments against her will come out early and will have been countered.
Agitprop doesn't work if it's countered quickly and across the same audience. (or at least that's what I think.)
And just every now and then, it'll turn out that it wasn't agitprop, just some very confused person who eventually gets it right.
Absolutely, and I should have made that clear.
She lit a fire under many many in the Repub party and especially conservatives. The elitists in the party had better come around and realize that the party has to move back to the right if it's going to survive.
There are a lot of similarities with her and Ronald Reagan and given a few more years it could be more than just similarities.
Until such time as naysayers come up with a viable alternative to Sarah Palin they would do well to stop bashing her if not remaining mute all together, they just cause turmoil and descent and feed the DUmmies.
Excuses excuses excuses.
“She was muzzled!”
“THEY undermined her!”
“Romney was out to get her!”
No one made Sarah Palin ramble on incoherently in front of Charlie Gibson, Katie Couric, the VP debate, or more recently, Good Morning America.
This is all her. It’s what you get.
Stop blaming others for her shortcomings.
We can do a lot better, and we’re going to need to if we want to take back the White House in 2012.
Hell no.
Reagan spoke in complete grammatically correct sentences.
That’s like saying she punched her way through two layers of wet paper bag.
Which may well be their intention. Their disdain for Sarah Palin is hard to understand otherwise.
Well, Brother, Mrs. Smooth calls, I'm off to grill the ribs before the Pirates game starts. Catcha Later! :o)
what the eff are u talking about ?
Calvin Coolidge was no ‘do-nothing.’
He was merely a man of little words.
In fact, I am reminded of a quote from him when thinking of the rhetorical failures of both Barack 0bama and Sarah Palin:
“The words of a President have an enormous weight and ought not to be used indiscriminately.”
Well said in a few words. It’s appreciated.
Stop being a mouthpiece for the left.
There was obvious tension between McCain and Palin on at least the global warming issue - maybe others. She deferred to his position as the VP should.
The state-run media has always worked overtime to trip Conservative candidates or edit them in the most unflattering way. She more than made up for that in the debate and multiple interviews and speeches during the campaign.
You have your warped opinion. I have the reaction of hundreds of voters who literally came out of the woodwork to volunteer and campaign BECAUSE of her addition to the ticket. And that was just a handful of precincts here in Texas where I have connections. I’m sure there are hundreds, if not thousands of precincts with similar stories.
You obviously hate her, but have offered nobody as an alternative except Newt. And that was priceless. Thanks for playing.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
Oh, yes I can. He ran the campaign, and the poll numbers went up when he picked Sarah and down when he went for the stimulus.
Boy are you in la-la land. Once again, nobody got to vote for Sarah as President. The choice was McCain or Obama. Personal popularity aside, nobody votes for the VP slot if they think the P slot would be handled by a boob.
The RNC tried? BS. The RNC wouldn't know a good thing if it gave them an orgasm. The PR disaster of the clothing bit was their idea, trying to gild the lily.
What was shockingly stupid was to let Sarah walk into the lions den of those antagonistic interviewers. She hasn't made any of the unforced errors of Obama (57 states) or Biden (too many to recount), and Obama and Biden never had to deal with such an interview. Too bad McCain wasn't bright enough to stick with Fox News, the channel folks actually watch. And it's the Dems who watch Fox who might have been convincable, not the Dems who watch ABC/NBC/CBS.
Her few gaffes have been retold continually, while Obama's and Bidens are ignored.
Catchya after the game, buddie. :)
“The woman cant speak and is shockingly unknowledgeable.”
False, you are now lying about facts in order to support your criticism. Your fear that the R’s might nominate an intellectual lightweight (in your view) has cost you your credibility.
BTW, I too wish Sarah was more eloquent and a little less “folksy”. She always seems to be in a hurry and that makes her look amateurish, IMO. However, she represents the citizenry, the people, unlike any politician I have ever witnessed.
"B-actor" and "hick" and "do-nothing" were labels other folks appended to Reagan, Jackson and Coolidge respectively during their political careers. I didn't invent them, nor did my post commend them as being true. Though, indeed, compared to Teddy Roosevelt before or Wilson after, Coolidge was a do-nothing president, which I do applaud.
