when one of our fellow citizens becomes infected with HIV every nine-and-a-half minutes, the epidemic affects all Americans.

Only in that the rest of us have to pay for it. The federal government is spending about 25 billion dollars per year on HIV/AIDS specific research and subsidized treatment.

Meanwhile, the involuntary diseases which normal people catch receive approximately diddly.

When something like one in a million people has AIDS, it definitely doesn’t affect all Americans. It does over in Africa, but this isn’t Africa.

I have never known anyone personally that has AIDS. Guess I lead a sheltered life.
