A lovely song commemorating Yankee aggression and tyranny.

I refuse to sing it when it's played in church.

Boy oh boy, that was terrific.

Here is my favorite verse, which often gets left out for some reason.

“He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on.”

I agree but did you also notice that they sing the PC version in part where they sing “let us live to make men free”, in the actual song it is “let us die to make men free.” Just a stickler.

I was resisting a post exactly like yours, but, I'll give you an Amen. Way too much mixing of Jesus with Caesar for this American and Christian.

Thank you. They did a wonderful job with this old favorite. And they sang my favorite verse so sweetly it brought tears to my eyes...

In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea...

Don’t know if anyone has seen the movie “Rocket Science”, but it contains an updated version of the song. It is actually a pretty cool rendition. It may take a moment for people to realize what it actually is, though.

Actually, here is the link:

Me thinks youm benefit from the example of a fella from Westmoreland County, Virginia, names be Robert E. Lee.

Yes, I noticed.

When they sang it for the Pope on his White House visit, they used the correct, non-PC version. I was happy about that.

“A lovely song commemorating Yankee aggression and tyranny.”

What’s lovely about agression and tyranny? Especially when it has continued unabated since 1865.

If you want a REAL song, sung by the men who would not be silenced, try this:

I noticed that, too. “Let us die to make men free” is very important historical context for the song as it was written by Juliet Ward Howe as part of the abolitionist movement. The funny thing is that they put the correct lyric on the screen.

That is a classic arrangement. The copies we use in our church choir are falling apart from many years of use, although most of us don’t really need the music anymore. We love singing it, even if it is a “Yankee” song. I think someone always calls in a lighthearted complaint about it, probably the same guy who complains when the Armed Forces Medley omits the Coast Guard song.
