Conyers says little about wife's legal troubles
By COREY WILLIAMS and JEFF KAROUB, The Associated Press
11:15 a.m. June 27, 2009

DETROIT — On the day City Councilwoman Monica Conyers stepped into a federal courtroom at home in Detroit to plead guilty to bribery, her husband was at home in Washington. Several of Rep. John Conyers' colleagues in the U.S. House said they weren't aware his wife could soon wind up spending five years in prison.

Rather than take the easy shot, the top Republican on the House ethics committee declined to comment. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat and a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said "it shouldn't have any impact at all" on John Conyers' work in the House.

A few thousand dollars in bribes – including one accepted outside a Detroit fast-food restaurant named Mr. Fish – have all but ended the short political career of Monica Conyers. They haven't made so much as a dent in the decades-long political career of John Conyers, a reserved yet adamant advocate for Detroit and Michigan who appears almost indifferent to the corruption scandal at home.

**SNIP**

"This has been a trying time for the Conyers family and, with hope and prayer, they will make it through this as a family," the Congressman's office said in a statement minutes after Monica Conyers entered her plea.

The chairman of the house judicial committee has found a means of getting rid of at least one of his problems.

This will just boost her street cred and she’ll probably run for mayor.

Dont expect anyone in Congress to make a statement over this. They are all corrupt and dont want it advertised any more than they can help.

I wouldnt trust any of them of either party with a plugged nickel.

Wives who are lobbyists, kids on their payrolls, kids who have business interests with the government, homosexual liassons, girlfriends on staff,Lobbyists payoffs, political favors for political donations. It goes on and on the official corruption. Ethics committees are a joke. These people dont know the meaning of the word. The campaign laws mean nothing to them, and they get to keep unspent monies.

What a rat hole of political corruption The Hill is, and I am not speaking of one party, but both.

You have phrased my thoughts perfectly. He married her for a reason (ha!), now he can quietly divorce her and keep his money for his kids.

This has been a trying time for the Conyers family and, with hope and prayer, they will make it through this as a family,"

Wonder if she said grace over the meal at Mr. Fish where she took the bribe?

I guarantee a everybody that as soon as she gets out of jail, Mr. Conyers will start with the “my wife was framed by whitey” routine.

Conyers backed off his ACORN voter fraud investigation. Why? Conyers said "the powers that be" stopped it.

My take.....Obama thugs are the powers that be. Drop the ACORN investigation or Monica goes to prison.

Transparency from the obamanation you can believe in.

JMO, of course.

I remember seeing an old historic news reel of Conyers being so self righteous about Nixon and Watergate. Ha! The great champions of Watergate — Conyers and Hillary Clintoon — how history will ‘stink’ of them.

I also remember how Conyers was insistent that Clinton Chinagate papers be kept ‘under glass’. If memory serves, he said that he wanted an ‘armed guard’ and a vault.

Conyers also demanded an investigation of Ron Brown's head hole [along with Maxine Waters and Alan Keyes]. But Conyers and Waters were both paid off with pork for their districts, so they allowed their ‘brother’ to fade in the news. Ice water in his veins.

Conyers makes Nixon look like a late great boyscout.

If they filed a joint return and did not pay the taxes on the income, then they both are guilty of tax evasion.

“if” she goes to prison, it will be a country-club type prison, with generous benefits. Imo, she will probably be sentenced with house arrest, or restricted house arrest, with lots of community service added. I do not think she will go to the ‘big’ house. Rep Conyers has a lot of pull, you better believe it. And he’s also got a friend in the White House, which is a big house.

Yep, cheaper than a divorce, let the state take care of her for a number of years! I wonder if she has any offshore accounts they don’t know about? I would think so.

I thought the reason John Conyers dropped the ACORN investigation was that the Messiah (or Rahm) promised that Monica will get a pardon if John leaves acorn alone.

Well I believe your opinion to be right on the money. She plead guilty right away. Thugs on the way to prison DO NOT DO THAT! They delay the big house time as long as humanly possible. The whole thing stinks, but as CNN hasn’t exactly gone into it in detail, I shouldn’t wait for the rest of the media to do any investigating. After all, it would be racist!

Don't worry, folks -- I'm sure there's some other member of the Conyers family who can take her place on the Detroit city council. Or maybe Kwame can return and run in the special election.

I believe Conyers should be questioned about his wife. What did know and when did he know it? It’s very unlikely he was clueless.

She is definitely guilty of something alright.

Probably thought no one would dare touch her.

She is taking this one for the team because she if she had a jury trial she would most likely be acquitted, but the negative publicity would be too much for her socialist crook husband to deal with.

After hearing Conyers talk, I could well believe he’s clueless. He sounds like, well, you just have to hear him for yourself. He could make a great cartoon voice.

Shoe on the other foot though, if any republican had a wife like that, he’d be out the door faster than a Katrina report.
