BET Awards to highlight Jackson's legacy

LOS ANGELES -- After three days to process the shock and grief, attendees at the BET Awards -- a show thrown into "total overhaul" by the death of Michael Jackson -- were preparing for what was sure to be a spectacular celebration of the "King of Pop," put on by an dazzling collection of the artists he influenced most.

Already an affair of major star wattage, Sunday night's show was thrown under a white-hot spotlight in the wake of Mr. Jackson's death, adding attendees and guests, doubling the number of media requests and even lengthening the red carpet to accommodate all who want to take part.

It was not immediately clear whether any members of the Jackson family, who had been gathering at their Encino compound over the weekend, planned to attend or take part.

Producers of the annual awards show -- which recognizes the best in music, acting and sports -- say they scrapped their plans and revamped the show to meet the moment.

"It's a total overhaul," network chairman and chief executive Debra L. Lee said. "Luckily, we have enough time to do that."

Previously announced performers, such as Beyonce and Ne-Yo, who worked on their performances for weeks, hoped to change them to honor Mr. Jackson, producer Stephen Hill said. Other artists who hadn't planned to attend the ceremony, including Usher and Justin Timberlake, tried to catch last-minute flights to Los Angeles to participate, Hill said.

Ms. Lee said the network would still present awards, but the show would be "more geared toward Michael Jackson."

Only the true zealots cannot get enough - Of which there are far too many unfortunately. For the rest of us that point was reached about the first or second news update of his death.

Michael Jackson hasn't been black for years, maybe decades.

No it shouldn’t...
He was one of the greatest entertainers in Music...There will never be another after him...

1. Elvis Presley

2. The Beatles

3. Michael Jackson....

To say he is not worthy in the Music Industry is idiotic.

Yeah, I knew what you meant. There are lots of “black” organizations that if were named “white” would be construed as racist.

You guys have to see this interview with Joe Jackson at the BET awards.

http://perezhilton.com/2009-06-28-michael-jacksons-father-hits-the-red-carpet#respond

I really think this hits the point of what MJ was to his father.

A cash cow.
Not a son.

It is disgusting.

Notice how he promotes his record company.

Why were Joe and Katherine celebrating a wedding anniversary??? I thought they were split up.

The whole family is beyond bizarre.

I agree!

I could not believe the interview Joe Jackson gave, he acted like he cared less that he just lost his son, even the CNN reporter looked baffled....

The FATHER is disgusting, and I am sure had a major part in all of Michael’s problems.....

RIP Michael, with your Heavenly Father who has always loved you and will give you Peace...

Absolutely atrocious. Joe Jackson is the worst father I think I have ever witnessed. I mean his son just died and he is talking about his new record company. What a shmuck! I bet those kids lived in pure horror and fear as their father beat the crap out of them. His wife I have no doubt was beaten worse than Tina Turner IMHO. I don’t believe in divorce but if Mrs. Jackson had thrown this bastid out the door and told him to hit the road I would have applauded especially 59 years ago (they are married 60 years...lol). What a complete and utter JERK!!!!
