The stars are not twinkling bright this summer.
Hollywood's movie studios, hopeful that marquee-name actors would push their summer box-office receipts to record levels, are finding that the heavyweights aren't winning over audiences like they used to. With all but a couple of big-budget films already opened, the summer of 2009 is shaping up to be one of the worst on record for Hollywood's A-list talent.

I’m looking forward to seeing public enemies. that and star trek will be the only summer movies for me.
I wait a few months and rent it on DVD...if I see it at all.
Time for another bailout.
Except for maybe seeing the new Johnny Depp movie, I cannot think of any movies I really want to see. Hollywood really blows!
“Hancock” bombed.
“Hancock” bombed.
I currently boycott any film that stars Sean Penn.
“Hancock” bombed.
Harry Potter will blow all receipts out of the water.
Cary Grant could rise from the dead and release a movie and it wouldn’t make the $$$ Harry Potter does.
It’s in the franchise. The franchise makes stars not the other way around.
We need another TEAM AMERICA, $#^@ Yeah!
Their problem IMO, is stories..with good stories, audiences would come back. Their promble is that they make (mostly) crap these days..I don’t know who runs these studios, but it seems these days most of the releases were either 1) Written by horny three years olds, or 2) Debauched phycho serial killer ex-fellons.
AM I MISSING SOMEING: Even Stevn Spielberg isn’t as good as he used to, WHERE IS OUR GENERATIONS’ CECIL B. DEMILLE??
Not if the 'stars' are jack*sses who think the people who pay good money to see the movies are all gun toting, bible thumping, illiterates who only care about 'God, guns, gays and abortion'!
Sometimes it better to keep your mouth shut when you depend on others to pay for your services (aka 'acting'). Many of us can find other entertainment without the help of 'stars' who think we are stupid and beneath them.
I can't think of a single one that I would spit on if they were on fire!
Yeah, but how did “Hancock” do?
I made it to the part where the midget started beating him up, and was going, "Kick his @ss, Sea Bass!" The scene where he starts screaming "Santa's coming! I know him! I know him!" put me out of the room. Since then, I have never deliberately seen anything with Will Ferrell in it. He's more annoying than Jim Carrey channeling Bobcat Goldthwait.
The only person on their list that’s really an a-lister is Denzel. Ferrell, Black and Murphy are, like most comedic guys, solid b-listers with the occasional big hit. And Travolta runs hot and cold and I think is in another down cycle.
Meanwhile Transformers 2 just had the biggest June opening ever and pushed this weekend’s receipt up 9% over last year’s equivalent weekend. We’ll see how the a list is doing this weekend when Johnny Depp’s Public Enemie opens up.
Hancock pulled 228 million domestically and a world wide total of 624 million, on a $150 million budget that’s definitely not a bomb, probably a little lower domestically than they would have liked.
Hancock was enormously profitable. I’d love to have a few “bombs” like that on my resume.
Depends on the international percentages, the domestic take probably about broke even (theater gets a cut too, so they didn’t get all that 227, then there’s advertising). But definitely with the foreign and then DVD Hancock turned a pretty tidey profit, I wouldn’t mind “bombing” like that either.
My finger got caught on the enter key. Despite the financial reaping of worldwide sales, “Hancock” bombed!
BTW: You do realize he is another liberal "actor," right?
*I did like Fresh Prince and Six Degrees of Separation, however.
I have seen 4 movies at the theater in the past 20 years..This year will be no exception.
I work too hard for my money to pay to have my intelligence, my values or my religion insulted.
