Time is running out for the legislatures in Arizona, California, Indiana, Mississippi and Pennsylvania to solve budget gaps.
The last time Indiana missed its deadline for passing a budget and had to shut down the government was during the Civil War.
But on Monday...
Indiana is one of five states -- along with Arizona, California, Mississippi and Pennsylvania -- bracing for possible shutdowns this week as time runs out for lawmakers to close billion-dollar gaps in their fiscal 2010 budgets.
Of the 46 states whose fiscal year ends today, 32 did not have budgets passed and approved by their governors as of Monday afternoon...
In California, state finance officials will begin issuing IOUs on Thursday if lawmakers and the governor cannot agree on a way to close a $24-billion shortfall. The IOUs would go to local governments, vendors, taxpayers and college students receiving state financial aid. California has issued such IOUs only one other time -- in 1992 -- since the Great Depression.
In Arizona, which has never missed its constitutional budget deadline, officials are battling over how to resolve a $3-billion gap.

Shut the garbage DOWN!!
Visualize ex-government employees living in cardboard boxes.
Everyone needs to get out of all these states before it's too late...
lol
That li’l sucker’s clicking up pretty quickly, isn’t it?
As I recall, “debt clocks” were used to beat up on Reagan. And W.
What goes around, comes around.
In the case of California, its the Democratically controlled state legislature, unions and the use of state services by illegal immigrants caused this mess. They are the guilty ones who have killed this state.
ping
Is that a tax revolt I see on the horizon? Yup. Inevitable, because the leeches in government won’t share the pain unless we rip them out of our flesh and squash them. It’s just not in the nature of parasitism. Vote their asses out. Any candidate who doesn’t run at least partly on a platform of reducing government doesn’t deserve your vote, no matter how many times you’ve supported them in the past.
No state workers end up losing ANYTHING. But the press gets pictures and videos of all the crying workers, who will get a PAID vacation.
Oh those poor, poor, AFSME workers will get another paid vacation on the taxpayers dime. Then congress will cave and approve Rendells budget. Happens every year.
Rendell manipulates the press every year and the press go along with reporting on the poor workers (who have lost NOTHING).
They are all scum.
Whoa nellie. Stay put and fix your own damn messes... Don't bring your lib Rat trash down here. With all due respect, we don't need external state punishment on top of fed punishment
Down here?
lol..
Yes, Indiana has a real problem.....how much of it’s SURPLUS to use. Be brave, Hoosiers, be brave.
...slowdown, FRiends. Don’t buy anything that you don’t need for a few years. Take it easy. Cut hours a little. Let’s make it all of the states.
Gov. Jan Brewer wants a TEMPORARY sales tax. TEMPORARY????
Agree there are too many state government workers. Would be good to prune some.
I can say this because I’m a federal government employee.
This presents a good opportunity for free Americans to separate from the liberal fascists, declare independence, and repudiate the government debt that the liberal fascists are using to enslave us all. It would also be a good time to peaceably occupy the Legislature offices and stop them from business as usual. Freedom will only come through non-violent revolution.
The last three "Honest to God, Cross my Heart and Hope to Die" Temporary tax hikes are still with us.
Sounds fine to me.
I have a dream where furloughed D.M.V. workers are lined up at the freeway on ramps with signs saying they’d work for food. But none have any skills. And All are fat and lazy,
Some people might realize how little of what government "does" for them really matters.
Look at the econ maps of where the states in the best economic shape are located. I don't look forward to an influx of idiots who take a dump in their drinking water, then move on to another watering hole only to leave the same mess (not saying you are in that group, but perhaps you live amongst them..?).
It has been said before and will be said again.
CUT SPENDING!!!!!!
As long as we allow them to “BUY” votes by spending money on programs to reward sloth and gluttony, then we will see taxes rise and states stay on the edge of bankruptcy.
When Federal, State, County, and Local government figure out they DON”T have to spend money then we can see things improve. Or maybe I should say when enough voters that PAY taxes decide to vote and throw the crooks out of office.
As for a government shutdown? Let it happen at all levels.
Let it shutdown and be downsized. (We can hope)

Thanks. Please keep us posted.
I know where you live...lol
Look at the econ maps of where the states in the best economic shape are located.
Another Texan who hasn't figured out his own president is a hard core leftist...stepping in from the last Texas president, who was so bad he was replaced by a Communist from Africa...
Even in a freaking depression, CA has nearly double the economy Texas has. Not even close.
Stay put and fix your own damn messes... Don't bring your lib Rat trash down here.
I have no desire to go to Texas or Arizona....
lol
I don't want to live like a lizard. Been there done that. Ya keep talking about messes, yet, lets look at basic things like crime for instance....It tells a lot about what kind of people live in certain regions.
Did you know Texas major cities, (Arizona major cities too) have considerable more crime than even Los Angeles?
Whats that tell ya?
Stay put and fix your own damn messes
Speaking of messes, check out the murder and burglary rates in Texas...
Ya ought to see Dallas...

If the gov't shuts down, that means they're NOT spending our money, passing stupid new laws, or taking away our personal liberty.
Heck, I wish we could shut 'em down at least 200 days out of every year!
Funny, you and I live in different states, yet it sounds like we both go to the same DMV!
They sure take LONG lunch breaks and act arrogant and all seem to be fulfilling affirmative action.
Thank you..
That's why many in Cal *want* it to happen, as some people stand on the sidelines barking, telling everyone that will listen that government crashing is somehow a bad thing
lol...
They don't get it.
We want state government to go broke. We want government in chaos, knowing there is no money left to steal from the people....The more that take their money out of here, the better...
The less government has for their hundreds of thousands of government parasite employees and their lottery style fat retiremment pensions and benefits, the better!
I don't care who get cut or fired, cops, fire, paper pushers, staff, teachers whatever...Fire them, cut their wages, salaries, pensions and benefits...Do it!
We want those gimmie programs to die...We want government chaos!
lol
All states, all of them, took the tobacco billions windfall and created new entitlements and offices and bureaucracies as fast as they could.
Now the money is gone. Cigarette taxes have been raised. All the bureaucracies and entitlements and offices are still in place, and the stupid states think they’re entitled to have more money to replace the tobacco windfall.
And we, rich in oil HERE AT HOME, and FULL OF COAL, refuse to exploit OUR OWN RESOURCES because the freaking leftists who believe in the myth of man-made global warming want to “protect” the areas where those are.
This is insane.
“Any candidate who doesnt run at least partly on a platform of reducing government doesnt deserve your vote, no matter how many times youve supported them in the past.”
Exactly, & why I’m a pessimist. Even if we toss out all the current crop of politicians, chances are the new crop won’t un-do all the bad stuff that’s been done. We need candidates who will swear to reverse all this nonsense!
it is way past insane.
You’re right.
The only valid functions of government are to provide stability and punish wrongdoing. Period. Nothing more...
Also, pretty crazy to think that Californiaerstwhile Wild West, home of rugged-individualist cowboys, pioneers & prospectors, place that elected Gov. Reagan twicehas since become so infested with lazy, pathetic seekers of daily Gubmint Cheese.
Meh, Barney Franks will bail them out. /sarcasm
All brought to you by government at every level.
City, county, state, federal...Every level...Growing, intrusive, all encompassing, all controlling.
Everyone wants government on it's knees, or should.
he only valid functions of government are to provide stability and punish wrongdoing. Period. Nothing more...
For the past decade or or two, it's now become incrementally more punitive and intrusive on an extreme level...Becoming a dictatorship, that answers to no one.
Also, pretty crazy to think that Californiaerstwhile Wild West, home of rugged-individualist cowboys, pioneers & prospectors, place that elected Gov. Reagan twicehas since become so infested with lazy, pathetic seekers of daily Gubmint Cheese.
Same old story. The more people dependent on government, the larger government and more powerful it becomes.
Some how I think they’ll al find a way to settle their “gaps”. No government official really wants a shut down, the people might learn how little we need them.
Some people might realize how little of what government “does” for them really matters.
The problem is, that a lot of people WANT what the govt. does for them- and they want more.
Mi. just went through “day off” for things like the DMV. It was all over-how they were closed, who was closed, who was open and why, etc... they still interviewed hundreds of people who showed up for their govt. services and were bitching and moaning about them not being open.
Those people will vote for higher taxes if they think they will get their “services”. They know they won’t actually pay higher taxes- because they don’t pay taxes in the first place. What’s worse- there are more of them than us.
1) Guaranteed, defined benefit pensions that enable a state employee to retire in his early 50’s after 30 years service, and receive 90% of his top salary for the rest of his life, while the rest of us see 40% of our 401-k’s disappear.
2) $15 Billion a year in services to illegal immigrants.
3) A bloated education bureaucracy that has thousands of administrators making gobs of money and doing pretty much nothing. The state's schools are some of the worst-performing in the country.
4) Confiscatory taxes that force businesses to flee the state, leading to lower tax revenues.
5) All sorts of welfare programs and entitlements that cost billions of dollars every year.
That's about all I can think of at the moment.
I was watching WGN-Chicago at lunch. The “hep’s me” crowd was having a rally at a community center to protest against the state government cutting any of their freebies. They want tax increases to support their habits.
They really do think the state is a money tree.
Last week, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless were protesting in Springfield. The folks are upset that the House isn’t going along with income tax increases yet.
“...slowdown, FRiends. Dont buy anything that you dont need for a few years. Take it easy. Cut hours a little. Lets make it all of the states.”
Brightest comment on this thread so far. You nailed it, STARVE the beast.
>Even in a freaking depression, CA has nearly double the economy Texas has. Not even close.
Umm, whats not even close is that Ka is broke and Tx is not. - Not even close.
After all, zero doubled is still nothing at all.
“And we, rich in oil HERE AT HOME, and FULL OF COAL, refuse to exploit OUR OWN RESOURCES because the freaking leftists who believe in the myth of man-made global warming want to protect the areas where those are.
This is insane.”
The real reason is that higher energy prices are good for the cash starved government and good for the too-big-to-fail commercial/investment banks manipulating the trade in the commodities market. The leftists are communists plain and simple and it’s global now. For a short time, think of the world as one big Feudal empire and your a peasant carrying water buckets all day so you can afford to eat, hopefully stay warm and roof over your head. Feudalism/Communism fail as the peasants productivity drops off the earth. As the Russian communist workers use to say:
‘They pretent to pay us and we pretend to work’
Yeah well after the socialists ruined there home state of New York by the 1970’s they needed somewhere to go... Now that this is federal infestation the last place to go is your house to tax, to confiscate and tell you to take it in the behind silently or else.
Hey easy on the DMV, my wife works for one. They trust her with the department credit card and the purchases because the last persons to do this ran up thousands of dollars of charges and bought tons of needless print cartriges and junk that no one was even using. My wife cleaned the mess up and now they run a surplus in that area.
They also trust her as the time records keeper in her work department and a mess involving folks abusing their work time and padding of hours is being cleaned up. She is conservative and absolutely hates waste.
So my wife fights DMV waste and fraud from the inside...
We’ll have been married 20 years this August...I guess I’ll continueto keep her!
Relative to the others you mention, how would they exist as the problem they are had it not been for the Democrats?
“In the case of California, it’s the Democrats”. “They are the guilty ones who have killed this state.”
There, fixed it for you.
CA is looking for money and so will be in debt. Negative numbers doubled are even worse!
The scumbag polticians are quaking because they understand fully that the only people who will truly notice any effects from a “shutdown” are government employees and parasites. Shut ‘em down.
mdmathis6,
I apologize for slandering your wife’s profession.
I was using the d.m.v. as a symbol for ALL gubmint.
I appreciate that there are many many good government employees who work tirelessly and try their butts off every day.
Simply put though there are wayyyy too many that are worthless.
In my city and county we have had a building boom for the last twenty years. Building permitting area grew like crazy. Now we are shrinking and they still have the same amount of folks in permitting doing NOTHING.
Please understand how I do not like paying higher taxes.
Also this July I will have been Married to the most wonderful woman for thirty years. Thank you GOD
