U.S. to Forgive Indonesian Debt in Exchange for Conservation Plan ($30M-for-nature swap)

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- The United States will sign an agreement Tuesday to forgive nearly $30 million in Indonesian debt in return for the large Southeast Asian country agreeing to protect forests on Sumatra Island, which is home to endangered tigers, elephants, rhinos and orangutan.

The deal is the largest so-called debt-for-nature swap the U.S. government has organized so far under the U.S. Tropical Forest Conservation Act and its first such pact with Indonesia, which has one of the fastest deforestation rates in the world, losing an area of forest the size of Switzerland annually.

Under the deal, Indonesia will pay the nearly $30 million into a trust over eight years instead of repaying it to the U.S. government. The trust will issue grants for critical forest conservation work in 13 forest areas in Sumatra.

Indonesia's massive deforestation rates makes it the world's third-largest emitter of carbon dioxide behind the United States and China due to the forest fires set each year on peat lands to clear forests.

Oh what's a measly 30 million?..

Debt for Nature..here's a thought..offer that pesky bill collector "a green plant" next time they call. Shove some flora, fauna (whatever) into an envelope and send to your utility company.
This Green is More Valuable than GOLD!

Save an orangutan..and a tiger, an elephant, a rhino... !"

every dollar US forgive is another dollar that adds to US own debt. US government dont have any money. They could only either print or borrow

Awfully nice of the Chinese to lend us money so we can have the Indonesians maintain their forestland. Now what happens if China decides to stop lending?

>> every dollar US forgive is another dollar that adds to US own debt.

That sort of logic is for you to wrestle with. Bambi and his ‘ministration’ are ABOVE all that.

Ben Bernanke will buy it for the ‘Fed.

The dollar will drop like a rock, but hey, what’s that to Ben? He’s taken care of!

Thanks..A Teaser in case someone does not follow your link "as is".

"The challenge of course was securing Indonesian goverment records potentially damaging to Barack Obama's candidacy for the US presidency as well as other records pertaining to a young Barry Soetoro and his family wouldn't be so easy to acquire and secure, and for this, the visitors would need the assistance and cooperation of the Indonesian government."

"It's not that getting Indonesian government help is difficult, it's not. It's no secret that Indonesia is one of the most corrupt countries on the planet, but we're not talking about the challenge of dealing with corrupt government officials here, but rather, dealing with the "true believers of change". Convincing the Indonesian government that an Obama presidency will be able to deliver that "change" and that it was in the interest of both countries to see that Barack Obama was elected was nothing more than a fait accompli for Faleomavaega's entourage"

Sheer idiocy!

Indonesia writes the 30 mil off the books and makes zero changes. Zero is happy, smiles and drools all over the East Wing. Clear cutting continues but the environuts all get woodies and have a fine night.

Then we wont get to eat what we want, or as much of it. And we wont get to set our thermostats at the temp we want either.

America is the most prosperous nation in the history of the world, and he wants us to CHANGE that!!!!

Freaking deaf lemmings are charging over the cliff for this tarded illegal student visa overstaying Indonesian!

Uh, I think the author forgot one other little "emitter"...

The Alaska volcano is pumping out more "greenhouse gasses" in one month than the U.S. and China combined pump in in 10 years.

How sweet. Barry’s “giving back” to one of the scenes of his foreign childhood. With our money.
