Big speech gets blessing in Dillinger movie

After watching the excellent new Johnny Depp movie "Public Enemies" -- the story of romanticized desperado John Dillinger's murder in Chicago with the help of the Outfit -- Wings and I realized something.

We were hungry. So we walked over to Volare, the fine Italian restaurant at Grand and St. Clair on Wednesday evening, where three amazing things happened:

1. We had the most superb sausage and peppers in the universe. The sausage was beyond tasty, the peppers perfectly cooked, the sauce to kill for.

2. A group of people came in, the women in red dresses, the men in 1930s gangster outfits, fedoras for the guys, the women with much cleavage, feathered hats, tiny veils, red lips.

It was a surprise party for Craig Alton, the fellow who runs Untouchable Tours, taking tourists to famous mob murder scenes, including where Dillinger fell facedown, near the Biograph Theater on Lincoln.

The movie “Thief” mentioned in the article is great and so is the sound track.

I'm still left wondering if all the rumors about John Dillinger are true:

1. He had an enormous ..., er, he was a bigger than life male member and part of his anatomy is in one of the Washington D.C.'s mall museums.
2. He was a modern day Robin Hood, often benefiting Great Depression poor with the proceeds he got from banks.
3. He was a great sculpture, expertly carving a pistol from a bar of soap to escape from jail (I know this is true).
4. He once bitch slapped Baby-Faced Nelson silly for making a run on his main squeeze.
5. He often personally telephoned J. Edgar Hoover just to taunt him over his exploits and failure to be nabbed....etc.

“Freelancers were entertaining, once. But freelancers cost too much. They get crushed.”

Hope from Hollywood that the Usurper in Chief will get his in the end? ;)

I can’t WAIT to see this film. A lot of it (the bank robberies, etc.) were filmed in a town about 30 miles north of us.

Of course, that’ll be the LAST film made in Wisconsin, as our ‘Esteamed’ (as in ‘steaming pile’) Governor has taken away any tax credits for movie-makers/businesses that make movies here.

Freelancers do cost too much!

All of these tales of the demise of Dillinger, who was a vicious thug btw, forget to mention that when the FBI ambushed him outside the theater they managed to kill a couple of civilians, too.

Dillinger's base of operations was Indianapolis. The Mob in Chicago were predominantly Sicilian and Italian. As the federal government developed its police presence in the 1930s and 1940s they pretty much cleared the criminals out of Indianapolis. That's not the case with Chicago where the criminals still run the city.

Dillinger's gang were either of Scandinavian ancestry, or linked in a variety of ways to York and Lancaster counties Pennsylvania ~ the core farming area of the old New Sweden colony.

His wife's family name was HOVIS, not HOFIUS or HOFIOUS (mistakes made by paid professional geneaologists who didn't understand the history of that colony). Her brother also ran with Dillinger and there are remarkable stories about this man as well ~ married 5 times, and his sister 3, or maybe more. All of 'em were members of a congregation of "The Church of the First Born" near either Morgantown, IN or Martinsville, IN at the time. Beryl, his wife, ultimately died in childbirth rather than be attended by a physician. Family members still talk about it ~ that event kind of drove most of 'em out of the COTFB.

A six degree separation story about John Dillenger.

My wife's uncle the late Edward Schied was a Dayton, Ohio police detective in the 1930s. He and his partner arrested John Dillenger. I think Dillenger was sent to another jurisdiction and either was released or excaped. I do not know the exact date so it might have happened before he became “famous”. For sure it happened before Dillenger’s meeting with Agent Purvis. : )

Growing up in Indiana, my impression of John Dillenger was that he was the scum of the earth, sort of an embarrassment to the rest of us.

Maybe I grew up in a sheltered environment.

Yes, you did. My grandfather lived across the alley from John Dillinger's father. He visited his dad frequently. Regular neighborhood event.

Folks in that neighborhood ~ particularly the several federal police officers (different agencies) all had the same relatives too.

--saw it yesterday.

Well photographed, doesn't deviate too far from history except for the timing of the death of a couple of the "gangsters" and really doesn't make any mention that the FBI got a couple of civilian "collateral" mistakes in "getting " Dillinger, at the little Bohemia shootout, IIRC--

That question was asked the Playboy Advisor in Playboy Magazine back about 1967-69.

They said there was no truth to the story.

Thus proving that Will Rogers was right when he said that after the FBI kept killing civilians trying to get Dillinger that someday Dillinger would get himself mixed in with some innocent bystanders and then he'd really be in trouble.

An interesting read. From time to time on T/V,some old black and white footage is shown of that era and persons. I liked the interview of Anna Sage, the woman who set up Dillinger ( it is claimed). She was with her lawyer and looked unusually clean cut, younger than her years.

Also, what seemed tragic was the plea of Dillinger's father and they showed him plowing a field first. He asked for an amnesty and said he was sure John would comply. The man appeared absolutely work and time worn. I believe he was a harsh father though. Used lots of physical punishment.

I did boycott the movies, but made exceptions once in a while. I thought "Gangs Of New York" a masterpiece of re-creation, re streets and buildings. Alas, the final standoff between the good guy and bad guy was pure fiction. The "bad" guy was really killed by three thugs in a bar. The part was brilliant in characterization of Poole/Cutting by Day-Lewis.

I will take my spouse to see this one though. Interesting to see if lots of hokum is produced to suit the main actor.

Dillinger's father was pretty typical of the other members of the Church of the First Born in that time ~ kind of rugged for the kids.

I've been told that if a child were up playing in a barn loft, or maybe on top of a shed roof, if the father (any COTFB member) said "Here, jump and I'll catch you" the child would not move knowing that their father was tricking them into jumping and getting hurt.

There would be no follow up trip to the doctor afterward either.

Not too long ago Dillinger's dad's place near Paragon IN was for sale. Thought about bidding on it.

If it took two years to answer the question, there must have been some truth to the rumor.

Two years? Get real! I was in the military and saw the issue then. Sometime between 1966 and 1969.

Don’t expect me to remember the date, month, year or page it was on after over 40 years!

--Wikipedia--It was only after the FBI mistakenly gunned down a local resident and two innocent Civilian Conservation Corps workers (as they were about to drive away in a car) that the Dillinger gang were alerted to the presence of the FBI. Gunfire between the groups lasted only momentarily, but the whole gang managed to escape in various ways despite the FBI's efforts to surround and storm the lodge. Agent W. Carter Baum was shot dead by "Baby Face" Nelson during the gun battle.

--I think this is the "collateral damage" we are talking about- [

Always something to learn here. Got on to Google and sure enough the COTFB were there and it was Morris, the founder, an Englishman of a break away sect from the Mormons. Violence marked their passing.

A bit of a far cry from Dillinger himself, but also tracked down his ancestry. Mathias Dillinger came from Alsace-Lorraine in Europe. To the United States in the early 1800's. German and French people there. Old John Dillinger,(1864-1943), Dillinger's father, very prolific. Fathered children up to 47 years of age.

I must find out whether the press will try to interview Dillinger's descendants.

Whoops. My bad.

The elder Dillinger (1864-1943) the bank robber's father married a second time after his wife died. His last offspring was a daughter born 1922. He would have been about 57 years old. (Quite the busy man).

The Morrisites were "newcomers" to COTFB ~ which was already in existence in the furthest Northern parts of Finland/Keralia in the 1500/1600 period (details are difficult to find simply because virtually everybody in that part of the world were illiterate), and the name even shows up in a later 18th century attempt by yet a second group of Orthodox priests to Christianize the same folks.

By 1703 there was a COTFB congregation active on the Costa del Tejas (Texas Coast) ~ and I presume this was the doings of a group of Sa'ami whalers. Sa'ami whalers also worked out of what are now the East Coast USA ports in/near Providence RI, and somewhere in SC.

The "Dillinger Fans" have had several professional genealogists take a look at John's genealogy. Hard to believe a guy could have a GGGrandfather from france who joined the COTFB. More likely he simply came from Dillinger, PA, which is up the road from Finland PA and down the road from Blue Ball PA.

The old new Sweden colony RELOCATED from Central Maryland (Elkton) and Lancaster County PA to Western Maryland (and what is now the West Virginia Panhandle) and to York County PA in/about 1700. They'd tired of the constant disputes generated by the incoming Quakers so they relocated the whole colony ~ moving both the COTFB crowd AND the Lutherans (broken up into something like 5 different synods at the time ~ strange folks Fur Shur).

The professional geneaologists always founder on the relocation. They find someone left Lancaster county for, let's say, Bucks County, circa 1700, and they figure the rest of his relatives stayed in Lancaster. All at once you have English and German ancestors you never knew you had.

You have to track back to York County first, and then to Lancaster. That way you drop the English, drop the Germans, and pick up the Swedes, Norwegians, Finns and Sa'ami.

Of note the new Sweden colonialists named everything in York after their former homes in Lancaster county and the Elkton area.

Once in York, the new Sweden colonialists built a string of colonial extensions due West all the way to Kansas City ~ took a while too ~ America had to be settled behind them, but they got into the tree cutting business big time with a large percentage becoming part of the cutting edge who opened up the frontier by bringing land up to farming standards of use. They named most of their colonies "Elk....", "Deer....", "Union.....". By the time they got to Seymour, Indiana (before it was Seymour), Count Jakob Silverskjold was forming a new Sweden/Finland for himself with a claim on 150,000 acres he'd purchased about 1806-1810.. Folks descended from the new Sweden colony called it Amaroosia (Reindeer Crossing), English speaking people called it "Mule's Crossing" (which, btw, can be understood quite well as "mulluh crossing" or (reindeer crossing" in Fenno-English Creole. Later on his son Meedy named it Seymour so he could get the railroads to run through the town.

The original new Sweden settlers met up with an entirely new bunch of Scanderhoovians in this area at Uniontown.

The far larger Scandinavian migrations began a quarter century later as a series of famines swept the land and gave the folks in the Fenno-Scandinavian peninsula the choice of fleeing to America or dieing.

Regarding the Morrisites, the use of the term "Church of the First Born" appeared to have disappeared about 1836 in the Mormon movement mainstream. If you research things deep enough you'll find Mormons have their own view of what the COTFB is. I have mine ~ with the COTFB appearing in Upstate and West Central New York in the late 1700s early contact with some of the principals behind the Mormon movement is entirely possible.

I don't think there's enough information out there to rule out any number of theories.

Now, about the "violence", no doubt the COTFB believed in it. They also didn't and still don't believe in doctors except for bone breaks. When the Orthodox priests first left off trying to Christianize these folks in the 1500/1600 period they pretty much left the shamen alone. Today the COTFB continue to hold tight to faith-healing.
