Thanks! That’s why I mentioned parenthetically the “original” form of Spanish (AKA Castillian) with what I thought was a Catalan version or, as you noted, an Andalusian influence.

The ex- was multilingual so she could understand my elementary Italian or my college-level French if not my English. There were times when I thought the movie Barcelona was about us.

Here is a remarkable statistic: in the first three months of this year, more Mexicans crossed the border heading south - in other words, coming home - than in the opposite direction.

How could anyone know this. Especially a British paper?

Last line of the piece...What worries the US is to what extent Mexico's violence can be contained south of the border.

They never worried about it before. We have hundreds of invaders here doing harm and now they claim to worry about it?

Since when are there between 8 and 12 million Mexicans in the US? There are that many in California alone! I'd say there are at least 18 million ILLEGAL Mexicans in the US, and a similar number of legal Mexicans here.

Per Bear Sterns study on missed opportunities to make $$$, there were ~ 20,000 illegals in the US at end of 2004.

The BBC needs to get the talking points correct. Its "women and children hardest hit"
It'll be updated now: Women, Children, and Mexicans

Like millions of Mexicans, Rigoberto and Martin know what it feels like to be victims of a recession made in America.

Made in America with their help. One reason California is in such bad shape is all the anchor babies.

I live in a U.S. “Resort Town” and when drink/food/hotel prices in Mexican resort towns got higher then home I did not go back. Cancun has been vastly overrated for years. I like Cozumel it is safe and never had a case of H1N1 like Cancun however it suffers from vastly inflated prices!

It is not that hard knowing how many Mexicans return home. They actually need permission from their government to do so and the BBC could get the information from a Mexican Consular Office if they were willing to supply the information.

The trickier statistic is knowing how many Mexicans sneak into the United States. The Border Patrol used to estimate that two got in for every one captured at the border. I don't know whether or not this is true anymore, but when apprehensions fall, illegal entrants are assumed to fall by a similar number.
