Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein told an FBI interviewer before he was hanged that he led the world to believe that his country had weapons of mass destruction because he did not want to appear weak to the Islamic Republic of Iran, according to declassified FBI documents released Wednesday.
Hussein was quoted as saying that he was so concerned about radical Iranian leaders that he was ready to sign a security agreement with the United States guaranteeing protection from Iran....
Hussein also referred to Osama Bin Laden as a "zealot" and said that he did not deal with al-Qaida....

It doesn’t change the fact that everyone....liberals, conservatives, Americans, Europeans, United Nations, etc....all thought Iraq had WMDs.
The fact that Sadaam was lying about it changed nothing and does not make President Bush a liar.
Besides, do you trust an admitted liar to now tell you the truth?

Weapons of mass destruction includes chemical weapons not only nuclear..
Sadaam, on the record, murdered many Kurds and Iranians with chemical weapons.. AND some of them were found in Iraq..
Weapons of Mass Destruction WERE found..

I guess when you are sitting around waiting to be hanged you can say anything you want.
The time to say those things was BEFORE your country is invaded, and perhaps co-operating with all those useless nations inspectors would have been a beneficial as well.

If you make it a point to make everyone think you have weapons of mass destruction. Guess what? You are going to get invaded and hung.
Sounds good to me.

To: steve-b
What a crock of disinformation. Of course Saddam had WMDs. We know about all the chemical weapons he had, supposedly we supplied the seeds for that program during the Iran/Iraq war. We know he had tons of unenriched uranium ore and was trying to get more. We took Saddam out before he could amass the equipment necessary to really threaten people at a distance...equipment such as centrifuges which Europe and Russia were happy to sell him.
The truth is that if we had not taken out Saddam, both Iran and Iraq would probably now be close to building a bomb. There is no doubt of Saddam's intent and desire to possess WMDs, we've seen what he did to his own people.
All those trucks that left Iraq right before the shock and awe...someone somewhere at least has a lot of chemicals.

Well, he was kind of painted into a corner.
Sun Tzu is said to have said “When weak, feign strength; when strong, feign weakness”.
Saddam was simultaneously trying to make the Iranians think he had WMDs, while at the same time trying to make the UN think he didn’t.
Sucked to be him.

Old news. He wanted the Iranians to believe he had WMD so desperately that he denied ever having them every step of the way right to his dying breath.
But of course, the leftists will hang this lying, mass-murdering monster’s every word if it will help them further discredit GWB. That’s also old new.
To: GonzoGOP

Very true about his thoughts re:Iran. That much I will accept, because that is EXACTLY Iran’s intention, and has always been. The Iran-Iraq war was fought over that exact area.

Are we supposed to believe Hussein. I believe Saddam Hussein about as much as I believe Barack Hussein. Of course Sadaam could have been lying. But this is a plausible scenario just as certainly as was him having destroyed the WMDs in the weeks leading up to the war or his having moved them to Syria (which certainly explains all the truck activity at the border before the war).
Either way.....he faked it....he destroyed them....he moved them....the invasion was still justifiable.I've seen *many* quotes from prominent RATS during the late 90's and early this decade...including from BillyBob himself...telling us of how dangerous Sadaam was and how he needed to be *strongly* dealt with.

Convince the world you have X, don’t be surprised the world responds as if you have X.
This helps defuse the “there weren’t any WMDs!” mantra: ok, so he didn’t - but he admits having worked hard to convince the world he did, and we acted appropriately based on his deliberate misrepresentation.

he led the world to believe that his country had weapons of mass destruction because he did not want to appear weak to the Islamic Republic of Iran I've heard that said on more than one occasion. Well he got his wish. Maybe he should have squealed before the shock and awe started.

Perception influences reality.
His "phantom" nukes had deterrence impact as much as the real ones. Everybody believed that he's got something. Everybody had to act on this perception. He bluffed. He was called on his bluff.
The idea (very much negated by the Bush Derangement Syndrome democrats) was that you don't threaten US or else.
