HIV travel ban
Washington Times ^ | July 3, 2009

...A notice from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) shows the Obama administration is seeking to lift a rule that forbids those infected with HIV from entering the country. If the HIV travel ban is lifted, the virus that causes AIDS will be removed from the list of "a communicable disease of public health significance" that disqualifies foreigners from passing customs.

In the late 1980s, Republican Sen. Jesse Helms of North Carolina was a proponent of the ban, leading the effort to get it codified into law. Since then, it's been of particular concern to the gay advocacy groups who recognize the policy disproportionately affects gays and lesbians. These groups have urged lawmakers to repeal the ban, gaining support from some such high-profile Democrats such as Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

Government agencies, however, can repeal the rule without any action from Congress, although it would be a lengthy process. Although OMB posted its notice last week, lifting the ban would take at least several months as the Department of Health and Human Services goes through a required public review and comment process...

If this new rule prevails, we are going to have to include in our budget reckoning for government health care the cost of treating a great number of the world's HIV positive individuals. There will be nothing to keep them from coming here and seeking "free" treatment.

...it's been of particular concern to the gay advocacy groups...

But...but...I thought AIDS wasn't a "gay disease"...?

Just in time for the overhaul of our health system, right?

you are right..and of course this is all to appease the radical gays. But why would he do such a thing if they are hell bent in control the cost of health care? This makes NO SENSE other than for political appeasement.

Here's a job description I came across in my recent travels:

Description

Full time, grant-funded Project Coordinator position for the development and implementation of a (county name) County LGBT Resource Center. Position includes community outreach and strong collaboration with other community agencies and resources.

Requirements

BA/BS in education, human services, health, social work or related field plus two years related experience required. Ideal candidate will have specific knowledge of issues and challenges confronted by LGBT individuals, their families and support systems. This position requires strong communication skills, the ability to develop collaborative relationships and work independently. Qualified candidates are encouraged to send cover letter and resume.

You can guess where the "grant funded" money comes from. The county in question is quite conservative, with small towns, farms, rolling hills, and lots of unenlightened rubes in need of a little "culture cracking."

Lots of innocent little kids around too, for that matter.

I once sat in on a meeting where medical benefits for gay partners was discussed. It was admitted that it would be incredibly expensive—at that time maybe half a million a year if the partner had AIDS.

Few diseases are more expensive to treat, and as they have developed new ways not to cure AIDS or prevent its further spread, but to extend the lives of the victims, it has gotten more and more expensive.

If Obama decides to bring over millions of Africans with AIDS and give them free treatment, it would bankrupt the country even faster than free medical treatment for Mexican illegals, which we are doing now.

And that’s not even considering how many presently uninfected Americans these people may spread the disease to.

I disagree. I think this is another way to gain control over EVERYTHING. If we open the doors to HIV-positive patients, every dime of health care funding will go to their treatment. There will be nothing left for anything else. That will be necessary for containment, Also, we’ll be responsible for not only health care, but for housing and welfare for these individuals and for their families, I’m guessing. And if we lift the ban for HIV, we may have to do the same for other diseases as well. This will involve CDC reform and will go hand-in-hand with the immigration reform obama wants to put in place. IMO, this will bring dramatic changes.
But I could be playing the part of drama queen this morning. I hope so.

The disease will spread here in this country.

It seems to me that bankrupting and ruining our country is exactly what he has in mind. He introduced a bill in the Senate to give away our national wealth, so I don’t think this is even much of a secret agenda.

There is no such travel ban, or, at least, it has not been enforced since 1991.

There are many HIV-infected legal immigrants in my medical practice, and many HIV activists and agitators from foreign countries travel here freely to do their thing.

The medical bills for HIV-infected illegal immigrants are massive, and are paid by the government.

Some "travel ban".

This ban really doesn’t make any sense to begin with. Of course, foreigners should not be allowed to come here and tap into our public health system for care for their pre-existing ailments of any kind. But AIDS is not a readily communicable disease, and a lot of people have gotten it through no fault of their own, particularly in Africa, where a lot of babies are born with it, and a lot of women get it from sexual relations with a husband or rapist that they had no way to resist, and probably quite a few people get it from the primitive medical care system where reusing needles hundreds of times on different patients is routine. Most of the people who have AIDS and want to visit the US should probably be turned away for other reasons (e.g. no evidence of sufficient funds to support themselves while they’re here, or evidence that they’re attempting to immigrate illegally by coming in on a tourist or student visa and then disappearing). But for people that it otherwise makes sense to allow in, AIDS really shouldn’t be a barrier.

Sure, why not? We can pay for their health care, too.
