My Time on DU and the Honduras Situation

Posted on 07/03/2009 6:46:26 PM PDT by big black dog

I signed up on DU and tried to intelligently discuss the Honduras situation. You can't start threads there as a new sign up, so I looked for threads that had already been started up and tried to comment. I simply pointed out the facts. These threads were pretty much avoided until I commented, but then the comments came flooding in.

These is a synopsis of the responses I got:

(mostly from leftist articles and not original thought)

-- The actions by Zelaya were technically not in violation of the Honduran Constitution because they did not explicitly call for an extension of term limits (never mind that that every other branch of Honduran government, including Zelaya's own Party knew what was going on).

-- The OAS, the USA, and European governments support Zelaya (what can you say, they are right)

I guess it doesn't matter that every sector of Honduran government and the Honduran people oppose Zelaya.

Honduras is standing its ground. Will anybody stand up for them.? Evan the Conservative members of the OAU like Colombia have turned their back on them.

As someone who spent years marginalizing liberal websites with crazy posts and comments, let me give you some advice.

1. Forget reason. Most of the posters are there for emotional support for each other. This is why they have so many emoticons.

2. Work your way into their confidence slowly. Only after you have been there for a while can you disagree, and even then you have to be careful.

3. If you can not change their minds logically, steel yourself to reduce their harm by trivializing and marginalizing them. Outrageous sentiments are ok, but only after you have a track record and you do it with emotion.

4. You can say nearly anything about a conservative, but tread softly on BO, Hillary, unless it to accuse them of not being as mean and vicious as the rightwing.

Outside of that, do not go to these websites because you will not encounter much rational thought or good debate. If you want to explore liberal thought, try the Nation or Salon. Most articles are better written and you can see where they are coming from without experiencing the frustration of utter idiocy of some of these knuckleheads.

That is why I like FR. I agree with most conservative principles except in the economic sphere. There I tend to go a little more toward the “progressive”, but most of the time I get rational discussion.

parsy, who feels your pain. (sad face emoticon)

You cannot discuss any item rationally with persons whom believe Fidel Castro, Daniel Ortega, and Hugo Chavez to be enlightened despots. They disregard the many thousands that Fidel literally lined up against Cuban walls and shot, for “crimes” against the revolution simply because they were civil servants for Baptista and see this slaughter not as murder but as justified.
Incidentally, my parents were in Cuba in 1959 when it was a tourist mecca; and, yes, Baptista was a crook in bed with the mafia but he was a heck of a lot better than what they have now--ask any Cuban-American whose family happened to experience both regimes.

DUmmies have also boosted dictators such as Stalin (who actually killed more innocent people than did Hitler) and even thugs such as Robert Mugabe. I tried to join DU for reasonable discussion about five years ago about Castro and lasted all of one day...most of their reponsive are replete with the word f*ck, simply because they don't possess the intelligence to think of any other word to illustrate their points.

That site (which, by the way I wasn’t aware still existed) is NOT for children.

The language that flows from the demented souls is horrendous. Yes, go take a shower.

That was their only point and it is flat wrong.

i was a member of d.u. early in 2001 after the election. i found back then that the dems were still diverse. they hated my views and opinions yet they allowed me to remain for quite awhile. it was after they attempted to diminish my role and make me conform to their stupid exceptions aimed only at me that i refused to remain. some folks were civil and some were pointlessly inane and insulting. nothing unexpected really.

If you did not use the “F” word at least once in the first paragraph, you’re not going to pass yourself off as one of them.

“Honduras is standing its ground. Will anybody stand up for them.?”
Now Chili is pushing them around. I intend to boycott all products from Chili Ecuador Argentina Venezuela

If they can't stand up for freedom and the rule of law, I refuse to support them in any way.

There is a common thread to Obama’s actions.

He likes/supports Chavez.

He likes/supports the Castro bro’s.

He favors returning Zelaya to power.

He is pretty quiet regarding the resistance in Iran.

Obviously, Obama wants freedom to fail; we see that in his actions in the U.S. - he takes actions, time and again, which restrict freedom of action of the average person. His tax policies, trade policies and all other policies restrict freedom, none of them enhance freedom. Obama is a Communist!

It’s a total waste of time to try to hold an intelligent discussion with people who have no intelligence.

Comments contrary to the leftist view are prohibited there, as are posters.

I go to DU only to read threads about topics that I know infuriate them ... because I love watching them squirm.
