Producing hydrogen from urine
Physorg.com ^ | 7/3/09 | Physorg.com

Chemistry World reports that the catalyst could not only fuel the hydrogen-powered cars of the future, but could also help clean up municipal wastewater.

Gerardine Botte of Ohio University uses an electrolytic approach to produce hydrogen from urine - the most abundant waste on Earth - at a fraction of the cost of producing hydrogen from water.

Urine's major constituent is urea, which incorporates four hydrogen atoms per molecule - importantly, less tightly bonded than the hydrogen atoms in water molecules.

If it really works it’s a great idea IMO. But we’ll still need nuke plants to produce sufficient electricity. I like the idea of such “recycling.”

Urine contains a small amount of ammonia, so if you break it down you get Hydrogen and Nitrogen. Problem is, like many of the so called green energy solutions that enviros (non scientific morons)push, that it takes more energy to break the bond between the Hydrogen and Nitrogen than the energy value of the hydrogen.

What I want to know is that if we start using Hydrogen as a fuel instead of Carbon based fuels, how long will it be before the EPA and the Democrats classify Hydrogen Dioxide as a pollutant?

“REAL good news for China, and it’s 1 billion people who all pee.”

Was walking down the streets of Beijing one day and a little girl (~ 7 years old) just stopped in front of me, lifted up her skirt and started peeing. By the time I figured out what the hell she was doing (while her mother stood and waited) I had to jump to avoid the puddle!

“it takes more energy to break the bond between the Hydrogen and Nitrogen than the energy value of the hydrogen.”

Not necessarily. If you allow urine to sit, it forms even more ammonia, which is very chemically reactive. Just like crude oil is broken down to gasoline, diesel, kerosene, etc. it still has more energy in it than you have to use to crack it.

Ya, we might all be told to drink more in order to produce more urine.

I’ve heard it’s better for you to drink more (non alcholic) fluids because then your kidneys are continually flushing out your system.

Won’t happen any time soon.
Hydrogen can not be stored, economically.
It must be super cooled for any container to keep it for very long, and that takes money and energy!

I do like the idea of splitting water, into hydrogen and oxygen, in a standard auto engine.

There is excess electrical energy in any vehicle, most of the time that the engine is running. Use that excess to split the water molecule.

Send both the hydrogen and the oxygen through the standard air intake system.

There is debate about the effectiveness, but it does seem to work in many test cases.

Somehow, I do not see the public totting around catheter bags to power their vehicles, or even to supplement their gasoline engines.

Do you realize how much pee it would take to produce just “your” fuel?? Sure, there’s hydrogen to be had in urea, but it takes one hell of a lot of urea to produce hydrogen in usable quantities.

It gets worse.

After the hydrogen burns, it produces di-hydrogen monoxide. That stuff is dangerous - a real killer.

Sure it is bad, as it is the MAJOR greenhouse gas, being 30 times as high as the EVIL CO2. All joking aside, our chemist has discovered an existing process giving only the voltage to start the process and not the amperage/mole of H2. Sewage treatment plants have used the methane offgas as long as there have been such plants. If there is an excess of offgas generators could be used to electrolyze the urine but that would be a SO What. She also does not say how she plans to separate the urine. This idea will get a green (yellow) fuel research grant of a couple million.

Actually it is pretty common. We literally used tons of the stuff to keep ice off of the runways when I was stationed in Plattsburgh NY.

Anyone up north who ever used ice melt has use urea. They look like little white pearls. They could easily fit in a canister and be charged to produce a form of hydrogen gas.
