FOUR US sailors have been assaulted while on shore leave in Perth - with one slashed across the face with scissors.
WA police said a group of sailors were walking through Perth train station about 1am (WST) this morning when they were confronted by six people. ` "Three males and three females have yelled abuse at the sailors and as they tried to walk past them, one sailor was punched in the face,'' said police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall
``An altercation occurred and four sailors were assaulted, with one male struck in the face with a pair of scissors.''

Is it known if the reason for the attack was because they were American sailors? I’m hoping it was because everybody had had a bit to drink.
I don’t know if there’s any information yet. I hope they weren’t targeted because they were US sailors, but it shouldn’t happen at all.
I have a slight suspicion that the assailants prefer speaking Arabic to English.

My Dad served in New Guinea in WWII and knew a number of Aussie soldiers. He said the Aussies were half whacked on quinine (keeping the malaria symptoms down) and tough as hell. He wished the Japs feared the Americans half as much as they feared the Aussies.
In his opinion, a Japanese invasion of Australia would have been a bloody fiasco for the Japs. No American help needed.

Wow, I guess things have changed. Perth was one of my favorite shore leaves when I was in the Navy in the early ‘80s. I found everyone extremely friendly and very brotherly to American sailors.
I also suspect - as do other posters - that the perpetrators are immigrants from a Muslim country. One confusion - I thought that "they" all loved us now - after the Cairo speech.

In Oz, that could encompass Lebanese, Aboriginals, Somalis, Maori, Samoans, Tongans, and a few others.
Any of these ethnic groups would be just as likely to commit an assault with a pair of scissors. Scissors are very common weapons DownUnder. Along with Screwdrivers and Drywall saws, and Hammers, scissors would be by far the most common “weapons of opportunity” we encounter on our Patrols in New Zealand (which would be a fairly similar situation to Oz).
All of the above (not not knives) have the added advantage of having a plausible “lawful purpose” if the perp is stopped by a cop.
I don’t believe these sailors would have been deliberately targeted for being Yanks: I do not detect that degree of antipathy against Americans here. If I had to guess, excess alcohol would be involved, probably the main driver. Possibly methamphetamine added into the mix.

Maori, Samoans, and Tongans tend to be deeply religious, and they tend to espouse an Evangelical flavor of Christianity. They tend to immigrate to Oz for financial reasons, usually from New Zealand.
I do not know about the religious persuasion of Australia’s Aboriginals: they are originally from Australia and and badly disenfranchised, like the American Indians only worse.
While it is true that Islam is a deadly sworn enemy of America, it is also true that there are others. In this case I am speculating that Islam is not the driver to the assault on the American sailors. I’m guessing it is alcohol with or without methamphetamine.

What about the Aborigines? They are blacker than negroes, and they are indigenous to Australia. Real Australians.
Tongans and Samoans and Maori also have dark skin, and there are more than plenty of those in Australia, too. A good many of them have Australian citizenship — but many don’t need it because their New Zealand passports give them the right to be in Australia.
I would not, at this juncture, “bet the farm” on this crime being perpetrated by muslim immigrants. It is quite possible, but it is not a safe bet.
Every country has thugs and low-lifes. When my ship was in Perth 28 years ago we had a couple of people jumped by thugs and beat very badly. However, the great majority of Western Australians were very welcoming. In fact, as a young American sailor, I found the young lasses of WA to be very welcoming.
When I was there it was white boys who were attacking us (jealous because their women were crazy about us). Not sure if that has changed in the ensuing 28 years?

As for Australia being “saved” by the American navy, we need to remember the huge effort put forth by this country to save itself.
We are not talking about France here.

IMO, it is far more likely to be Muslim immigrants than Aborigines, who seem fairly peaceable and - more importantly - have no specific hostility towards the U.S. and its people in uniform.
There’s not enough information here to assume anything, other than 4 US sailors were assaulted by 6 people in Perth at a train station. There are scumbags all over the world and I’m sure Perth is no exception. Fortunately, the sailors were not seriously hurt and the perps are probably on tape and will be tracked down and dealt with.
Having had many Aussie military friends and surf buddies, I do not have any doubt that the Japs would have gotten their asses handed to them by the men of Australia.

The Aussie's have been our best Allies and I hope they see us the same, they wouldn't stand for it. If an Aussie had been anywhere near that incident he/she would have been right in the middle of it. Love them Aussie's.
And without Australia’s Pine Gap, the CIA would be utterly screwed. Leave the Ugly American schtick to the Left. Australia’s a fantastic country, the women are beautiful and friendly, the beer great. Take the time to read their Defense Ministry’s recent white paper on projected US influence in the Pacific region. They’re planning for a day when the US can’t meet it’s commitments.
And many Australians do speak Japanese, it’s a huge trading partner and holiday destination, particularly for Australian skiers. Both countries are small relative to China (which both view as the primary long term threat to their national interests), both have a historical distaste for immigration, and both have a well-educated, literate populace— far more so than the US, which should place its public school system under the Department of Agriculture because they are nothing but moron farms.
