Alaska's Governor Sarah Palin is expected to travel widely, campaigning for Republican candidates after startling America by suddenly quitting her job.
One of America's most unconventional politicians, she left the country reeling on Friday evening by declaring that she is resigning her office this month and deriding the "superficial political blood sport."
Almost a year after bursting on to the national scene as John McCain's presidential running mate, Mrs Palin, 45, has now made an unpredictable leap into the unknown. Speculation is at fever pitch that she will seek her party's nomination for the 2012 presidential race.
Mrs Palin offered few clues about her future plans and said she was quitting in order to protect her children, especially her Down syndrome infant Trig, who she complained had become the butt of adult humour. She also said she wants to escape the legal cost of repeated ethics investigations which have hampered her ability to govern.
But far from disappearing from view, the telegenic Mrs Palin has given herself the opportunity to leave the relative isolation of Alaska and prepare the ground for a possible run for the presidency in 2012.
If she does this she will be following in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, both of whom travelled around the US extensively before launching their own presidential runs.
Mr Palin's theatrical folksiness captivated the US when she ran for Republican Vice President last year. Despite enduring withering mockery in the media, she remains hugely popular especially among the country's disillusioned Republicans.
In her characteristic style, Mrs Palin announced her departure from the top job in Alaska in her back garden in the small town of Wasilla, where she was mayor until 2002. As she spoke into a single microphone, ducks waddled across the lake behind her and small

Good for her! She’s got my cash!
She would be terrific in that capacity as well IMO.
Who hinted that she might tour the US with Rush?
Come on Rush, do it with Sarah. The media would follow you both like flies. Bambi would be left with himself. Nothing
I give huge kudos to the Brits. While their media is also mostly leftist drivel, they still are the only in the world with outposts of sanity, objectivity and professionalism. Lately I catch myself more and more reading Brit articles.
Thanking GOD for Sarah Palin, she is a breath of fresh air.
Run, Sarah, Run !!!
This would:
* Bring conservative principles back to the RNC (small government, get government out of our lives, lower taxes, 2nd amendment support, state's rights, small business support, lower taxes, strong defense, no-nonsense foreign policies). Conservatism works every time it is tried.
* She could be a credible spokesperson for energy, drilling, etc in light of sane environmental initiatives.
* She could, on a daily basis, take the wind out of Barry's Marxist sails on a host of his anti-American issues (bank take-overs, nationalization of large sectors of the economy, socialism, class warfare, generational theft, bigger government, job killing). Her media appeal would take away from the daily barrage of "new plans" put out ad nauseum by Barry, Rahm, Steffy, and 'Astro-Turf' Axelrod. She would be a countervailing force to the crap we get from the White Crib on a nearly hourly basis. If Republicans embraced the Twitter, Facebook, MySpace internet viral communications, it would be a direct hit against Barry's minions.
* She could - and this is the biggest reason she should take over the RNC - help with a 1994-esque take-over of both houses and start blocking the hopey-dopey-changey-strangey crap we have seen for the last 6 months.
The Presidency would be OK for her later on, but short-term we need to do things that set the stage for long-term solutions, that is, GET THE SENATE BACK (which will run to the SCOTUS issues), get the HOUSE BACK (which runs to spending and social engineering issues).
We need to be strategic, not knee-jerk, and Sarah may be an important rallying point to meet these objectives AS THE HEAD of the RNC. This is not the time for a third party - it will take WAY too long. Give the RNC a make-over, clean house, and get on with it!
But I could be wrong....
“Despite enduring withering mockery in the media”
and some on the site Free Republic, there stands corrected.
The GOP needs a voice if they are going to regain seats in the House and Senate and Sarah will be that voice. We need a focused message and Sarah will do that.
The Brits do a better job of covering America then our drive-by media.
DITTO!
they unlike our State Run Media do not have a Pony in this race.
Sarah will be in Simi Valley, Ca on August 8th at a Republican women’s conference, I had it twittered to me yesterday. I was talking to some people online yesterday, some who may not think that Sarah is the best candidate in 2012 and they all said that if Sarah can come out and fight for our Constitution, they would support her if she ran for President. They all said it’s about damn time a Republican with GUTS comes out and takes down the libs. We had to deal with this crap for 8 years, Bush never fought back, but Sarah will, she knows she has God on her side and millions of supporters who will fight for our country’s freedom. Something must have changed for her when she visited Kosovo, sometimes it takes something powerful in life to happen to you to show you the right path to go
Our State Run Media is having nightmares about the fact that Sarah resigned and will probably run against their hero, ZERO.
ergo....Sarah Palin is Running Against the STATE RUN MEDIA!!! too!
(There. Fixed it.)
I think she's been reading her Sun Tzu.
Bingo! V’s wife.
Sarah Palin renonce à son poste de gouverneure de l'Alaska
One response to the article: "Dieu bénisse l'Amérique et la préserve des Barracudas"
You betcha! And the more Sarah is in the news the better! The DEMS and the RINOS are not liking it one bit! But I am loving every second that her name is mentioned!! GO SARAH!
I especially liked "disillusioned Republicans" in the hit piece. LOL
Exactly! That part puts a smile on my face — Sarah vs the State Run Media.
Funny the lefty UK Telegraph gets it better than the inside the beltway Pubs on Fox News.
She sure kicked up a firestorm this weekend, didn’t she?
I’ve been thinking about some things Sarah tweeted about or mentioned in some of her remarks with Wolf Blitzer, Hannity, local press, last month. The Obama admin had been trying to stop the gas pipeline deal she was putting together. She got it done then they had the gaul to try to claim credit. There were other things they began to meddle in once O got into office. So, not only did she have the anklebiters harassing her, the national government was doing the same.
Flashback: When Sarah resigned from the Alaska oil and gas board, she worked outside the system, got the Attorney General fired as I recall, cleaned out some crooks and then defeated the sitting Governor in the GOP primary. She then skyrocketed to 80-85% approval rating.
Fast forward: She’s going to do it again from outside the system first, then run.
The Beltway knows this and they will discredit her, however, We The People will work with her to throw the bums out.
The article was not overly biased. Compared to our MSM trash it was a normal and balanced article. But then again that’s not difficult.
They have had it playing on the enemies turf. This is the start of the first all Internet presidential campaign, in history, run by Todd Palin himself. They will completely change the media in this country. They will become the media. They will completely ignore CBS ABC NBC CNN NYT WP. They will give no interviews. They will issue no press releases. They will not have a press spokesman. They will take their own pictures.
Sarah will have her own daily TV show, and we will all watch it, and it will be hard to ignore. She will write several books, that you will be able to read on-line for free. Everbody will cite and quote them.
Sarah will run for the presidency by talking straight to the American people with no filters, trick questions and RINO handlers. By the time 2012 rolls around, you will feel like she is your own kid-sister.
The Internet is free, and she will be all over it.
Sarah is going to kill the mainstream media all by herself, because after Todd Palin is finished with them and becomes first husband, they will be irrelevant and will have no power anymore.
Just saw an email that one of Sarah’s people Marjorie Dannenfelser from TeamSarah.org is going to be on Cavuto Monday PM.
It just may be Sarah has something on her mind with talk radio and Rush. Limbaugh said he is golfing next week in several places, yet he just got back from golf in Hawaii. Logically, our big ace in the hole is talk radio. The negative hits on anything CONSERVATIVE MUST Stop AND now. Add the free market capitolistic engine that runs our economy... has taken more of a hit from the Socialist in the White House?? Education is the key...and Rush, Mark Levin ( who is also mysteriously on vacation for a week) Palin and whoever else is a like thinker...CONSERVATIVE Americcans may be getting a break, a present if you will with the “something up his sleeve”Rush mentioned last week. Anyway...we hope, we pray and we shall be the backers, the bloggers and even contribute. Where do I send my money, Sarah, and when can I vote?? I believe we do have another backer on our side..”God shed His Grace on Thee, America!”
We Alaskans have been blessed by her time in office. I hate to see her go, but she is a true servant, and goes where she's needed. Needless to say, this drives the press BATTY. At the Tea Party yesterday, a reporter from time interviewed my family and I. The first thing out of my mouth when I learned who he was, was, "You're LATE!" LOL! And I don't think he was too impressed with the good, enthusiastic support for Sarah that was everywhere at the rally. The loudest cheers of the day were for her, and she wasn't there (probably at her folks' grilling big mooseburgers and reindeer saushage!).
Friends and neighbours stood around in baseball caps and sweatshirts and the family's red Cessna floatplane bobbed in the water.
Classic!
Two words, Sarah: Marco Rubio.
Yep. Real people. No fake greek columns and fascist stage-art ala Obama.
She can’t if she’s getting ethics complaints every time she leaves Alaska. The resignation frees her up to travel without having to pay 50,000 per time.
actually wouldnt that be another way to help SP connect a few more undecideds....enter some running events say in des moines, iowa and other interesting places
Unlike the corrupt, fawning, lib press here, the UK press has no qualms going after politicians they may have voted for or supported. To the UK press, if you can bring any politician down, whether left or right, that is a notch in your belt.
As a contrast to the press here, do you think that if an MP had birth certificate issues or citizenship issues, it wouldn't be made a big deal in every paper in the UK?
Perhaps she’ll speak at the 9/12 Tea Party at the Mall in DC?
Very cool idea. It also reminded me of a rant that Rush did in early 2008 regarding the GOP primary. He was extremely frustrated with the candidates and the waffling on conservatism versus the "big tent" RINO crap:
Well, conservatism isn't dead because it cannot be dead. Conservatism is not manmade. Conservatism is a philosophy. It's not a scheme. It's not a plan to figure out what the American people need and want, and then give it to them. That's populism!
Conservatism is a philosophy based on God-given natural rights. The Declaration of Independence, is that dead? Of course not! What's dead is leadership on the Republican side, and because there is a lack of leadership of someone who has the substantive understanding of liberty and the political skills to advance it, we get all this cockamamie nonsense about the death of our principles.
Our principles are not dead! Our principles cannot die. I'll tell you, in a lot of ways this reminds me of Jimmy Carter and his malaise speech. He blamed the American people for his miserable failures as president. Now we have conservatives and conservative wannabes, many of whom have held high office or hold high office or speak and write from formerly conservative outposts, who blame conservatives for their own miserable failures. What is lacking is not ideas and principles. What's lacking is the right people to speak those ideas and principles, folks. Admit it.
I'm sure that Rush believes Sarah Palin is the "right people".
By “higher calling,” Sarah plainly means that she will follow the will of God, or the vocation that He has planned for her since before she was ensouled in the womb. I have no doubts that she is a real Christian and not a fake one. And that is what gives her the stability and the tenacity so obviously lacking in most of the other politicians we see these days.
Huckabee might talk the talk, but he has never walked the walk. Sarah does.
What would a higher calling involve? Plainly, in her case, leadership. She has spent her whole life leading people, since she was captain of her basketball team, and probably before that. And she leads them not out of a desire for fame and power, but because she wants to help them, to do the best she can, and to inspire others to do the best they can. To build a better team, a better city, a better state, a better country.
To each and all of us, God gives a vocation. Catholics and Protestants agree on that, if they are serious. The Bible suggests that some have one talent, some have two, some have five. Sarah has been blessed with quite a few talents, and she doesn’t let them go to waste or bury them in the ground. She uses them and multiplies them.
To Catholics, “vocation” might mean a vocation to the priesthood or the religious life, or to marriage and family. But it also often involves choosing a line of work, doing the best you can to succeed and make the world a better place as a result. You pray for God’s guidance to find your proper role in life, the vocation you were meant for, what you are good at.
I think Sarah’s vocation may be to lead her country out of the sorry mess it has gotten itself into. She can’t do it alone, but with God’s grace she can lead, and we can all pitch in and help. Not follow like sheep, which is what Obama wants from his followers, but join the team and pitch in and get ‘er done.
All that still remains to be seen. Often God’s providential plan is not known except in hindsight. But we can pray that He will help our country to help ourselves and get out of this sorry moral mess and religious decay that we have fallen into, rather than deservedly punish it for its sins.
And those who are not religious can also play a part. But it was de Toqueville who pointed out that the American experiment needs religion to movitate a critical mass of people to do the right thing, to govern themselves, and to give of themselves unselfishly to make the world a better place.
Holy smokes!
It was classic! Who would have thought the Alaska Governor could have exploded so many heads in the lower 48 with her announcement.
My great hope: Sarah campaigns in enough marginal districts to shift the balance and the Republicans re-take the House of Representatives next year. Then what’s to stop her?
Exactly. *If* she has any further political ambitions, she won't be able to accomplish much in Alaska. Unfortunate, but I can't see any way around this.
First, Bliss.
Goldwater had installed Dean Burch as RNC chair, and the press had a field day ridiculing the Republican Party as "the Dean Burch Society". Party insiders dumped Burch for Ray Bliss, the Ohio chair, and it made all the difference.
Bliss understood that the Republicans had a weak grass-roots structure compared to the Democrats. Traditionally, the Republicans had always been a top-down party. The last RNC chair who took the grass-roots seriously was Marcus Aurelius Hanna, another Ohio chair, who had recruited immigrants into the party at the turn of the century. Something similar was needed, and Bliss built on the Goldwater effort to create a bottom-up structure that would recruit new faces into the party.
In 1966 Bliss went into the business world to recruit businessmen to run for office, a move that turned out to be brilliant. As a result of Bliss' work, the Republicans' Class of 1966 was the best slate of candidates they had put up since 1948. The gains made in Congress stopped Lyndon Johnson's Great Society juggernaut in its tracks. It was Bliss who did the groundwork that created what Kevin Phillips labeled as "The Emerging Republican Majority."
Second, Nixon.
Nixon campaigned tirelessly for Goldwater and the rest of the ticket. In 1966 he did the same thing, flying everywhere to campaign for Republican candidates for House, Senate and governorships. He did the entire rubber chicken circuit and raised a vast sum for the party.
Then Lyndon Johnson made the huge political error of slamming Nixon as a "chronic campaigner" in a major public speech. The Fairness Doctrine rules of the era required that Nixon be given TV time to respond. Nixon delivered a speech that brought him back into the limelight, grabbed the public's attention, and rocked the Democrats back on their heels. It was the real beginning of the 1968 campaign, and it was Nixon who lit the fuse of the Republican resurgence.
Will history repeat itself with Palin? Get yourself a comfortable seat, open up a beer (or two), and fire up the popcorn.
The Left, MSM and RINOs are going absolutely balistic right now. They at least thought they could just continue to attack her where she was at (as governor) and now they will be on the defensive.
Brilliant strategy that no one saw coming. She will be a tough target when she is no longer governor of Alaska.
Runners World did a nice article about President Bush as he was entering office as well. I appreciate them keeping political sniping out of their magazine when it comes to profiling prominent people.
It's a piper J3 cub.
