Television networks planning Jackson coverage

NEW YORK (AP) -- NBC executives changed their minds Sunday and decided to join other networks that will televise Michael Jackson's memorial service live this week.

NBC joins ABC, CNN, MSNBC and E! Entertainment in offering the ceremony live. It's set for 10 a.m. PDT at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

NBC had initially planned only a one-hour prime-time special on Tuesday night, but said Sunday it would also cover the event live. It was not immediately clear who would anchor.

Charles Gibson will anchor coverage for ABC, which is setting aside its typical daytime programming.

CBS anchor Katie Couric will be at the Staples Center, although the network had not yet said whether it was offering live coverage of the memorial.

CNN has seen its ratings soar with the Jackson story, and it will show the memorial on the main network and HLN (formerly Headline News). CNN International will air the ceremony to the rest of the world. Anderson Cooper, Larry King and Don Lemon are the anchors for CNN coverage. Robin Meade, A.J. Hammer and Jane Velez-Mitchell will anchor at HLN. CNN en Espanol also will cover it.

Chris Jansing will anchor live coverage of the memorial on MSNBC. Shepard Smith will anchor live coverage of the ceremony on Fox News, with Megyn Kelly anchoring coverage of the event on the Fox network.

E! Entertainment and TV Guide will cover the ceremony on their television networks and Web sites.

Jackson hasn't had a hit in decades

A person can count his "great songs" using fingers - and not have to move on to toes...

The MSM loves him because they see his creepy pedophilia as giving the finger to traditional Americans.

It's fine with me - if the only people who support the networks are the Michael Jackson types, advertisers will run not walk away from TV advertising. Traditional Americans are more than half the population and we have most of the money. Giving us the finger might not be a wise business decision. Then again, if advertisers are going for the black trailer trash demographic - mixed with liberals who hate conservatives so much they'll stand with child molesters ( a very small part of the population) - then "go for it". Well, there'll be some gawkers - the same type who stain to look at car accidents...)

I suspect the MSM has a very strong death wish - or those at the top are clueless... maybe both.

"This is good news. Michael Jackson is a legend and deserves the goodbye fitting for a King."

I'm looking forward to the part where they walk his body out to the Santa Monica Pier, place it on a raft and set it ablaze and push it adrift in to the Pacific ocean. It should be spectacular.

"It's mentioned in the article. Shep is anchoring. What a surprise."

Are you kidding me? No way is Shep going to pass on the opportunity to get so close to West Hollywood. I'm quite sure he'll be packing his biker jacket and ass-less chaps.

Not to worry - it’s just the lead-in for a series of specials about our brave and honorable military people and their sacrifices over the last several years. sarc/off

I heard some station wondering if "Michael would have died in vain."

Come on.

It’s not that he’s newsworthy, or intrinsically significant, or venerable, or that he was possessed of unique talent or genius. It’s merely that they saw their ratings soar when they covered his death.
That’s all it is. Jacko draws viewers like Jackie sold Photoplay.
We’ll be able to designate a Michael Jackson Memorial Checkout Line in every supermarket in America.

"It's fine with me - if the only people who support the networks are the Michael Jackson types, advertisers will run not walk away from TV advertising. "

I hate to disagree, but those are exactly the kind of viewers that most advertisers are trying to reach, young, stupid and highly impressionable.

Where shows like CSI earn very high general ratings, it's other shows like "Heroes" that have a very young and sought after demographic (18-29) that advertisers covet. Where retirees certainly have discretionary income, they are much less likely to be swayed by advertising, especially TV advertising. So, our televisions shows reflect it. It's crap entertainment created precisely to reach an idiot audience.

...anybody heard the over/under number on shootings at the funeral?....I’d say at least three....don’t laugh, I plan to watch this orgy just to see the cultural excesses...it should be great: Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Crips, Bloods, Hollywood phony-baloney posers, breathless reports from Katie Couric...it should be great!

Michael Jackson died years ago. I don’t know what all the fuss is about.

Best comment I've read yet.

In a sane society, perhaps only the Entertainment Press should be covering this monstrosity. I have no respect for ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC(the worst), and CNN. I have a little respect for FOX but I haven't heard what they are going to do.

If FOX does decide to cover they will really *iss-off a lot of their viewers. I know many people have emailed FOX already expressing their outrage at the amount of coverage this thing has received.

Fox is with the rest of them:

Shepard Smith will anchor live coverage of the ceremony on Fox News, with Megyn Kelly anchoring coverage of the event on the Fox network.
