Television networks planning Jackson coverage

NEW YORK (AP) -- NBC executives changed their minds Sunday and decided to join other networks that will televise Michael Jackson's memorial service live this week.

NBC joins ABC, CNN, MSNBC and E! Entertainment in offering the ceremony live. It's set for 10 a.m. PDT at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

NBC had initially planned only a one-hour prime-time special on Tuesday night, but said Sunday it would also cover the event live. It was not immediately clear who would anchor.

Charles Gibson will anchor coverage for ABC, which is setting aside its typical daytime programming.

CBS anchor Katie Couric will be at the Staples Center, although the network had not yet said whether it was offering live coverage of the memorial.

CNN has seen its ratings soar with the Jackson story, and it will show the memorial on the main network and HLN (formerly Headline News). CNN International will air the ceremony to the rest of the world. Anderson Cooper, Larry King and Don Lemon are the anchors for CNN coverage. Robin Meade, A.J. Hammer and Jane Velez-Mitchell will anchor at HLN. CNN en Espanol also will cover it.

Chris Jansing will anchor live coverage of the memorial on MSNBC. Shepard Smith will anchor live coverage of the ceremony on Fox News, with Megyn Kelly anchoring coverage of the event on the Fox network.

E! Entertainment and TV Guide will cover the ceremony on their television networks and Web sites.

This is very disappointing. I'm not surprised at the freak Shepard Smith but I'm surprised and disappointed at Megyn Kelly. She seems to be quite bright and reasonable. I wonder if she had any choice in the matter. If she couldn't refuse then I would understand but if she had the option of veto and chose not to them I'm extremely disappointed in her.

I hope nothing happens, of course. But there have been reports that hundreds of thousands are expected to show up at Staples Center, but only the approx. 20,000 ticket holders can get inside. Let’s hope there’s no trouble, but who knows.

“Nope, I’m dead serious. I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan.”

I’m not and never have been. Furthermore, I think all of this news coverage and funeral miscellania is so garishly excessive that it is ludicrous.

That being said, however, kudos to you for plainly and firmly stating your belief amidst all of this ridiculous Jackson-Bashing. That takes some courage, my friend.

It’s funny, but I can actually remember the days when most folks on the right believed in such quaint notions as “innocent until proven guilty.”

“Nope, I’m dead serious. I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan.”

That should be your permanent tagline.

So glad you posted that thread. Thank you. Sometimes I just think this country gets its priorities messed up. Debauched and washed up “entertainer” vs. genuine war hero—should be easy to choose which would be the best role model, it really should. Jackson’s funeral should have generated 2 minutes (tops) of the average newscast—McMahon deserved a whole segment on one (at least one) of the news magazines. Maybe Ollie North will do that some day.

The problem in bad economic times ( for TV networks ) is a lot of the idiots don’t have any money. But that’s fine with me - for a brief moment, CNN will top Fox...

No one mentioned MJ in the last years of his life. Why the fuss now?

I never gave MJ any thought from the mid nineties until the present. He just was someone you did not want to think about.

I think his death brought Americans some closure in how disturbing his life became. He was exported from our country to the entire world and became a symbol of decadence and American abundance gone wrong.

His story was a complete tragedy that did not have to be and that kind of thing interests people. It might not be the most appropriate thing to think about but you cannot control what interests people.

Same thing with Princess Di. The British people were not at all happy with her when she was globe-trotting with the Muslim playboy. Then she died and suddenly became a saint. People just love to be part of maudlin sentimentality.

Wonder if there will be a riot?

Fred Phelps and his nutjob clan from the Westboro Baptist Church are supposed to be there. You may get your wish.

Thank goodness for the USA Network, and TNT, Bravo, FX, TVLand, TCM, A&E, History Channel, Military Channel, “On Demand”, and my DVD player. There’s plenty of options. I have no intention of letting my eyeballs see one second of the Michael Jackson circus.
