PASADENA, FL -- An elderly man on his way to visit his wife at a Pinellas County hospital ended up shooting a man in self-defense in the hospital's parking lot, according to the Pinellas Sheriff's Office.
Detectives say 83-year-old Nathan Snyder was driving to Palms of Pasadena Hospital when he reportedly cut off a motorcycle as he was driving along Pasadena Avenue, about 1/2 mile north of the hospital, just before 3pm Friday afternoon.
The motorcycle driver, 64-year-old George Hall, followed Snyder into the hospital's parking lot and confronted him, investigators said.
When Snyder opened his car door, detectives say Hall began punching him in the head as Snyder was sitting in his front seat.
Snyder, who told detectives he feared for his life, pulled out a handgun and shot Hall in self-defense, according to the Sheriff's Office.

When you're driving, you're looking primarily for other cars, and your brain concentrates on that pattern - big rectangle with two headlights, not a narrow vertical line with one (consider how your brain does a double-take when you meet a car with one headlight out). Motorcycles (and bicycles) don't fit the pattern, and you don't "see" them until it's almost too late (or just too late).
That's why the bumper sticker/poster campaign: "Look twice - save a life - motorcycles are everywhere." This is also why occasionally you get a slow-thinking driver who 'didn't see' a transit bus or an 18 wheeler. Doesn't fit the pattern.
Makes no sense to go ballistic on an elderly man because he didn't see you, this guy just was looking for an excuse to beat up on somebody. Dollars to donuts he has been bullying for a long time, he just encountered somebody who wouldn't put up with the nonsense.

The guy behind you just got chewed out by his boss. He is upset as hell and going over it time after time in his mind. You are very likely to get rear ended.
That guy coming to the stop sign up ahead just learned his kid got killed in Afghanistan. Do you really think his number one priority is looking after you?
So many people on the road have real heart rending personal problems that you have to look out for them.

Amen. I always think of this when someone does something that seems inconsiderate, particularly when I am driving near a hospital. I tell my husband "that woman may have just received a diagnosis of breast cancer" or "that man may have a wife in the hospital who he knows is dying".
Yes, some people are simply uncaring. Many are also distracted because they are dealing with the realities of life.

The day my FIL died I nearly attempted a left turn on red into the path of a gravel hauler. I stomped on the brakes just in time and shakily wondered where my head was at.
Big O has the answer. Under Obama care,long before 83 we will all be given that final merry-go-round ride.

That reminds me of an interesting motorcycle encounter. There was a double file flock (gaggle, coven?) of motorcycles approaching from the opposite direction about one hour after sunset on an unlit undivided highway. It looked to me like a line of cars approaching. As they got near, for whatever reason the lead cycle closest to the shoulder increased speed and it looked exactly like the lead "car" was making a left turn directly into me. All this at highway speed. I did flinch and swerve to the right but then could see that they were motorcycles proceeding straight and true. It was one helluva optical illusion.
My biggest single concern, and fear, in driving is that I will fail to see a motorcycle. A couple of times I have started a lane change and nearly had a collision with one. I try my hardest to avoid such encounters, but some of them get in my blind spot and stay there. I know they are taught not to do that, that if they can’t see my face in my outside rear view mirror then I probably can’t see them.
I would just like to assure motorcyclists who read this that all drivers are not oblivious to them and that some of us try really hard to make sure they get their share of the road!
In Florida, it is legal to carry a loaded handgun within reach in your own car for “legitimate self-defense.” You do not even need one of the famous Florida concealed-carry permits for that! In many other states, that is not legally possible, and the motorcyclist might well have killed the older man.
My personal feeling is that one should not get angry while driving. On the other hand, there are lots of situations where things happen which are bound to cause resentment. A problem is that there is not way to apologize for an inadvertent discourtesy on the road. If you bump into someone on a crowded street, you can say “Sorry!”, and usually everyone understands. There is no similar signal available in a car. If you honk the horn, it always sounds annoying, unpleasant, or even aggressive.
Divers are often actually rather polite if they have a chance: they may yield to someone who is clearly in a jamb, or who has been waiting a long time, or has an awkward trailer which may require extra room: maybe not in New York, but in most other places.
But there is no way simply to say, “Gosh, I really am sorry to have cut you off.” If you could communicate that, an overwhelming number of people (I suspect) would give you a break, and would even appreciate the apology.

Why do motorcyclists have a problem if a car comes to close but have no problem white-lining between two cars at 70 mph on the interstate or pulling in between two cars with less than a car lengths separation?
There is a chance that he did see the motorcyclist, didn’t give a crap, cut him off anyway and nearly killed the guy. In which case he did need to get the crap kicked out of him in spite of his age.
If you are lucky, you may live to be his age.
