WASHINGTON Colin Powell says the U.S. took too long to strengthen its forces in Iraq after Baghdad fell early in the war. Powell, the nation's top military officer under President George H.W. Bush and secretary of state for President George W. Bush, said the decision to use a lighter force to defeat the Iraqi army was correct. But he said in a television interview broadcast Sunday that the younger Bush's administration should have realized the initial success in 2003 was only the start of a longer fight.

Just another guy jumping on the winning bandwagon.
Powel has nothing to say - he wimped out in Gulf War I when he should have pushed for the mission to really be completed then.
He is a jerk who cares about nothing more than himself, followed by race. God and country fall way down the list from there, at lest by his actions and words over the last decade. He lost all of my respect years ago.
I am so tired of Colin Powell.....

"You can find me in da club/bottles full of bub...."
And, as Secretary of State and former Chairman of the Joints Chiefs, where was he in telling Bush this at the time?
Powell just gets more and more insignificant all the time.
What you said! My sentiments exactly. We should have ended this thing in 1991.
Who flipped this guy’s “ON” switch?? Shut up, already!!
If, as seems possible, a Gulf War III is necessary, his legacy will be to have made it necessary by scuppering a conclusion to Gulf War II.
Go away, Powell! You’re a day late and a dollar short.
This is just more of -It’s not my fault,
Bush made me say it. I never believed a word of what I said. And If it weren’t Bush, it was Cheney.
Who am Dem guys. If they asked me.. Would a told them. earlier, earlier, earlier
Powell’s turned into a hell of an armchair general.
Now that he’s advising obama, we are certain to win handily in Afghanistan. (sarc)
BTW- Powell was slamming the Iraq surge in 2006/7. I’m sure I can go back and find some links.
Frankly I think Iraq had to have its bloodletting in order to get past the past and move forward. The taste of blood wasn’t as sweet as many thought it would be.
I thought that Christie Todd-Whitman would be Bush’s worst appointment. I was wrong.
This guy is the VERY reason we had to go back into Iraq and that fact should be pointed out to the bungling Idiot!
How would Powell know?
He never commanded large numbers of troops as is normal for someone of his rank. He was only a political general .
The affirmative action general has 20/20 hindsight while on the path to becoming another yapping Jimmy Carter type.
Go away Colin, retire, disappear and STFU!
libh8er says Bowell should have been booted from Bush's cabinet earlier.
The internet makes politicians’ efforts at revisionist history very painful.

Two months ago, Powell declared the surge a near-certain failure. On June 10, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he declared, “The current strategy to deal with it, called a surge — the military surge, our part of the surge under General Petraeus — the only thing it can do is put a heavier lid on this boiling pot of civil war stew ... And so General Petraeus is moving ahead with his part of it, but he’s the one who’s been saying all along there is no military solution to this problem. The solution has to emerge from the other two legs, the Iraqi political actions and reconciliation, and building up the Iraqi security and police forces. And those two legs are not — are not going well. That part of strategy is not going well.”

Novak: Powell caustic over escalation plans.
Robert Novak writes, Former Secretary of State Colin Powell
is caustic in private about the proposed surge of 30,000 additional U.S. troops. Powell noted that the recent congressional delegation to Iraq headed by Sen. John McCain heard from combat officers that they wanted more troops. The colonels will always say they need more troops, the retired general says. Thats why we have generals. Novak adds, Senior Republican senators are trying to get word to the president that any troop surge would be dead on arrival in Congress.

Powell rejects troop ‘surge’ plan for Iraq
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Powell_rejects_troop_surge_plan_for_1218.html
Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has, for the time being, rejected talk of sending more US troops into Iraq.
Appearing on this week’s episode of Face the Nation, Powell told host Bob Schieffer that he agreed with the Baker-Hamilton report assessment that the situation in Iraq is “grave and deteriorating.”
But the former Secretary also expressed skepticism about a plan currently being floated to send more troops into troubled areas of Iraq, stating that he is “not persuaded that another surge of troops into Baghdad for the purpose of suppressing this communitarian violence or civil war will work.”
Yo...Powell...shut the heck up! Go crawl back under the rock you came out of...you voted for the man that’s ruining America...your work is done here...leave US alone.
Thank you General Obvious!
I’m not blaming you obviously, but what relevance does this have now? Colin, guy, are you okay?
of course his bosum buddy bama would have supported the surge if only it had come "earlier"......yeah right...
Powell....go back to your rocking chair and collect your military pension, you jerk....
if we never hear from you again, it'll be too soon.
GO TO H*LL.
Thank you.
Next Colin will be telling us we should have bought gold a year ago.
Then why didn’t he vote for McCain? McCain was an early advocate of the surge and Obama was completely opposed to it.
The political dichotomy in America is going to be our downfall. Both sides hurt our troops in Iraq. The left was essentially a domestic enemy while the right became so reflexively supportive of Bush that objective judgement of the war became impossible.
Another example of exquisite 20/20 hindsight.
Powell was against the surge before he was for it.
Powell is the joke about army food that it's awful and there's never enough.
Powell: let's all vote for a Kenyan Commie who'll dismantle America's defenses so we can obey the Harry Belafonte racist imperative.
Powell: when you've gone as low as you can go, dig down deep and go even lower.
Powell is CRAP.
His biggest problem is we all know it but he doesn’t believe we do.
Maybe you could use your graphic arts skills to put a past due date on Powell’s forehead, like when he was 21 years old.
Powell and McCain are Media Darlin’s.
They love the attention, too.
Conservative??? ... NOT !!!
Perhaps he notices that the HMS Hopinchange is taking on water and he's trying to tiptoe closer to the lifeboats.
