I heard they shot a guy who pulled a gun on some officers this morning and killed him, then began looking for data on his possible involvement.
I’m wondering whether the got the guy, or are using this to close the murders...

Good. Big relief for them. I know the feeling because the Beltway Snipers were stalking my neighborhood in 2002 and it was very annoying.
DALLAS, North Carolina- Gaston County Police responding to a possible burglary call early Monday morning shot and killed a robbery suspect who may be linked to the serial killings in South Carolina.
According police, when they entered the residence, they found two people who lived there and a third who “was an acquaintance,” police said in a news release.
Officers began to check the individuals for identification and one suspect gave police false information. A second check on the suspect uncovered an outstanding warrant from Lincoln County. As officers attempted to serve the outstanding warrant the suspect pulled a gun and began firing at police officers. Officers returned fire killing the suspect.
Officer J.K. Shaw suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and has been treated and released from hospital.

If true, this will definately be welcome news to all who live there.
No point in using it to close a case if the murders may continue tomorrow. I suspect they have something that ties the guy to the murders.
These officers, in arriving before the perp had time to finish the job, most probably saved the lives of the two people in the house being robbed.
No, there's no point, but it happens. It just seemed odd to me that a guy got into a shootout with two officers, and suddenly they're looking at him for the serial killings. The thread I read prior to this gave no information supporting that jump.
Praise Jesus!! The Upstate of SC has been on edge all weekend. I had a feeling that they got him after the first reports about the suspected killer being killed this afternoon.
They not are using this to close the murder case. Gaffney ain’t Chicago! The Gaffney killer would not stop unless in jail or dead. I give the cops a little more credit and assume that it bothers them when friends and neighbors a killed in cold blood.I don’t think they would let a killer continue just to close the case.

See my post #18. The earlier information gave no reason for the jump in logic that this guy was the serial killer. None. Bad writing? Probably, but without information, it seemed a jump to figure this guy for the serial killer.

The perp the Gastonia cops shot was driving a vehicle that matched the description of the killers. I assume they have other evidence that will confirm the connection such as ballistics. Gastonia and Gaffney are about 1/2 hour apart on I-85.
I am trusting the fact that SC is in NC jurisdiction without a problem. I think they got him.
Cop being interviewed on FOX says they’re pretty sure the gun is the one used in the murders.

That information is new, it wasn’t in the earlier thread/news release. That simply stated there were three people who knew one another (the perp was a friend/acquaintance). He pulled a gun when the officers tried to arrest him on a warrant, shot one (I believe it said in the foot or ankle), then he himself was killed. Then it jumped to their looking at him for the serial killings. No further information until now.
They likely got the guy. Great! I wonder what tied him to all these people, or whether it was completely random.
There was speculation that he was a trucker because Gaffney is so close to the interstate highway.
It’ll be interesting to see what the details are.
I live about 40 miles from Gaffney so I have heard some of the detail on the story on the local radio. I hope in the end it is the guy, because he has shown no aversion to killing; one of his victims was a teen-aged girl. I really don’t think he was/is so much of a serial killer as a spree killer. I think robbery was part of his motivation and killing he did just for fun.
Is there any indication yet he knew these people? The earlier thread made it seem he knew the two other’s in the house where today’s shooting occurred. If he’s a spree killer though as you point out, that really may not mean much.
Truck driving is an ideal job for a serial killer but in this case it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Truck drivers are on the move and if one was a serial killer he wouldn’t kill several in one place over a matter of days.
