Special Report: Ideologically, Where Is the U.S. Moving?
gallup ^ | July 6, 2009 | Lydia Saad

Posted on 07/06/2009 5:59:38 PM PDT by Mount Athos

Despite the results of the 2008 presidential election, Americans, by a 2-to-1 margin, say their political views in recent years have become more conservative rather than more liberal, 39% to 18%, with 42% saying they have not changed. While independents and Democrats most often say their views haven't changed, more members of all three major partisan groups indicate that their views have shifted to the right rather than to the left.

These findings, from a June 14-17 Gallup Poll, somewhat conform to Gallup's annual trends on Americans' self-defined political ideology. Thus far in 2009 (from January through May), 40% of Americans call themselves conservative, up from 37% in 2007 and 2008, and the highest level since 2004.

Indeed, in the latest survey, 38% of Americans describe their political views as conservative, and among this group 58% say their views have grown more conservative in recent years. Although a large segment of liberals (42%) say they have become more liberal, far fewer Americans in the poll (18%) describe themselves as liberal -- thus providing little counterweight to the rightward movement of conservatives. At the same time, political moderates are twice as likely to say they have grown more conservative as opposed to more liberal (33% vs. 18%), thus further tipping the scales in favor of conservatism.

Gallup polling shows Americans becoming more conservative on gun control between 2004 and 2008, with opposition to banning handguns growing from 63% to 69%.

Americans also became more likely to say the economy should be given priority over the environment when the two interests conflict.

Gallup saw a seven-point increase, from 34% to 41%, in views that it is not the government's responsibility to provide all Americans with healthcare coverage.

Given the makeup of congress as well as the WH occupant, I must say I’m surprisingly encouraged. 2010 could be a blood bath for the Dems. If the economy continues to sour, the turnaround could rival or surpass ‘94. Although, significant gains in the Senate are unlikely because of GOP retirements in “bluish” states.

As much as I hate to admit it, I do know some LibTards that actually ARE sentient, feeling, thinking human beings. With kids that they adore. And pets. And careers. And homes with nice lawns.

It’s been six months and they’ve already HAD IT with 0bama and this Socialist Experiment...that THEY voted for!

And even if they’re not able to formulate complete sentences to convey what they’re feeeeeling, they sure as heck aren’t saying anything POSITIVE about the guy.

I mean, really! BEFORE the election you couldn’t shut them UP. Now, not a peep from them about all the ‘good’ their Messiah is doing for America, LOL!

I guess even low-ranking LibTards are a little nervous about keeping their jobs and watching their retirement savings dwindle. ;)

Good. *SMIRK*

If we can add to the House and keep the Senate fillibuster-proof we will have done all we can do for now.

I’m thinking when unemployment hits 12% by Sept/Oct of this year, it’s going to get ugly. Of course, according to the U6 figures, we’re already AT 16%, but the Media isn’t releasing the real, raw data...yet.

Oh, it’s going to be heavenly watching this poser fall. I can’t WAIT! :)

First we need to get organized and find our voice. I don’t see that in our Congressional leaders. Eric Cantor of VA-07 says he’s open to supporting Stimulus 2 if there are enough tax cuts in the deal.

Oh brother. I don't know what it is about all modern-day politicians. They think if they're not spending someone else' money, they're not doing anything.

remind Cantor that Bush 41 made a deal with his Dem Congress that if they would cut spending by a like amount, he would sign off on a tax increase. He lived up to the bargain, they didn't even try. It cost him the presidency.

We have 11 children, 9 still at home, all homeschooled and conservative.

Get busy.

If you can’t have them biologically, adopt them. There are PLENTY to be adopted.

Then homeschool them, to be sure they get a proper education with a proper world view.

Teach them about God.

Teach them about the Constitution.

Teach them about the sacrifices made for their freedoms.

Teach them to love Liberty and Independence.

Go and multiply!

We have two. Both were doing college level work at the age of 12.

As to the rest, my wife works as a CNS in a NICU after eight years in an infertility clinic, so I doubt seriously you've had as big an impact as she. The rest is your agenda, not ours, which is about developing and teaching stewardship processes. We multiply life in general per Gen. 1:28, not just ourselves.

Doesn’t matter though: Hussein’s thugs will create higher populations in urban areas, 105% turnout in the precincts thereof, and the ACORN types will continue to elect liberal hacks.

Any close vote for suburban or rural areas? No problem. Lawyers will get involved (see: Minnesota), and the election can be stolen that way.

So the communists/socialists will steal the elections with false votes in the urban areas and with the lawyers in the other areas.

Barring a miracle of God, we are destined, I fear, for totalitarianism.

I’ll go down fighting.

Here is a stimulus 2 that will work:
1. REPEAL THE FIRST STIMULUS.
2. MAKE BUSH'S TAX CUTS PERMANENT.
3. LOWER CAPITAL GAINS TAX.
4. CUT NON-DEFENSE GOV'T SPENDING 5% ACROSS THE BOARD.
5. WORKERS 45 AND YOUNGER GET TO INVEST 10% OF THEIR FICA INTO PRIVATE ACCOUNTS.

Whaddya think, Hussein?

I would say realistically about 85% of the country is embracing the realization that liberal minded politics will not work in a calamitous chain of events such as we are going through right now.

The liberal democratic fire engine is just spraying diesel fuel on the flames of America.

The only supporters of this current ideology is naturally pyromaniacs, people that believe they will prosper at the expense of others. aqwObamas leadership of America has done absolutely nothing to create trust in the government, ever since election day most of America has silently agreed to protest by abstaining from being the big time consumers they used to be, everyone is buying more frugally and less frivolous. Any way to pay less taxes has also been a focus.

America will not take the bait of another stimulus, America is like the King Salmon swimming upriver near my home in Alaska, they will not feed, will only jump at a lure if its shiny enough or if they are snagged, they have a purpose to reach the spawning grounds.

In my own comparison I see us like the King Salmon, we are swimming against a current while multitudes of combat fisherman are trying to lure us into their freezers.

We must continue the struggle, to swim against the flow, to ignore the flashy hooks of hungry predators. Another stimulus will not work because we as individuals rejected the first one. We are ignoring the hooks, the lures, the nets. We are Free America.

It doesn’t matter what they SAY in a poll. The last poll of importance was last November, and in THAT poll they voted decidedly LEFT!

I’ll believe it when Nancy Pelosi is booted out on her ass and ostammer is impeached for whatever they can get him on.

I see poll results like this and I can only wonder about the polling process and the interpretation of the results.

Clearly, the US is NOT becoming more conservative. If, that is, it’s “conservative” to want government to stay out of your business. Because clearly, Americans want government IN everybody’s business. They want and expect government to fix every problem.

Witness the last election. Two candidates, neither of whom ever met a problem they didn’t think government could solve.

And can anyone suggest with a straight face that America is becoming more FISCALLY conservative? With exploding deficits and Keynesian economics back in vogue? Are we moving to freer markets and away from a command economy? Please.

As a measure of how NOT conservative we are, consider that things would not be much different now had McCain been elected. We’d still have had a porkulus, it’s nature would only be slightly different. We’d still have had the massive interference in the market. The bankster bailout happened under Bush. McCain supported it and would have only extended it.

Americans want security. They don’t value freedom. Heck, they don’t even know what freedom means. That’s NOT conservative, and unfortunately conservatism is NOT the trend.

This poll is unadulterated BS.

If Stimulus 2 is in the form of TAX CUTS rather than more spending, then it might be a good thing to support. Of course, it really should include substantial regulatory reductions to free up private enterprise along with the tax cuts.
