Sea level rise: It's worse than we thought
New Scientist ^ | 01 July 2009 | Anil Ananthaswamy

Posted on 07/06/2009 10:32:33 PM PDT by Lorianne

In its 2007 report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) forecast a sea level rise of between 19 and 59 centimetres by 2100, but this excluded "future rapid dynamical changes in ice flow".

"Larger rises cannot be excluded but understanding of these effects is too limited to assess their likelihood," the IPCC report stated.

Even before it was released, the report was outdated. Researchers now know far more. And while we still don't understand the dynamics of ice sheets and glaciers well enough to make precise predictions, we are narrowing down the possibilities. The good news is that some of the scarier scenarios, such as a sudden collapse of the Greenland ice sheet, now appear less likely. The bad news is that there is a growing consensus that the IPCC estimates are wildly optimistic.

Even if all emissions stopped today, sea level would continue to rise. "The current rate of rise would continue for centuries if temperatures are constant, and that would add about 30 centimetres per century to global sea level,"

"If we burn all fossil fuels, we are likely to end up with many metres of sea level rise in the long run, very likely more than 10 metres in my view."

This might sound dramatic, but we know sea level has swung from 120 metres lower than today during ice ages to more than 70 metres higher during hot periods. There is no doubt at all that if the planet warms, the sea will rise. The key questions are, by how much and how soon?

WTH! In the article it clearly states that sea levels have been much higher and much lower that todaty in past periods of history ... yet they just nflinchingly carry on with the assumption that "burning fossil fuels" is causing warming at present.

Even if you concede that humans are affecting the climate in some way ... they have no clue by how much and no way to compare that to natural fluctuations in climate that have occured in the past and no way to confirm or deny that natural causes are working now either in conjunction with or human actions ... or dwarfing human actions.

The unknown variables are astounding ... even if you allow that anthropomorphic climate change is occuring.

Where do these people get the chutzpah and where can I get some of it!

Based on this prediction, I will have a valuable beach front house in not too long..so why should I worry?

It’s the “new science” from the New Scientist. Who needs facts when you’ve got hysteria? Excelsior!

we know sea level has swung from 120 metres lower than today during ice ages to more than 70 metres higher during hot periods

And we also have the issue of Teutonic plate movements that have gone on since the earth was formed, these have created mountains and sank continents - so how much of the sea level changes are accounted for by the Teutonic plate movements?

I think that fat people are not only harder to kidnap, they must also slow the Teutonic plate movements too - because we all know that man it to blame for everything, and nothing moves fast with fat people standing on it. I graciously present my 'FACT' with the same authority and scientific work that is presented by the Global Warming alarmists. (Yup, I made it all up - Where's my Nobel prize?)

50-year LOW tides on the Oregon coast in the past two weeks. Tide pools we haven’t seen in decades.

This article is BS.

CO2 does come from human activity, 3-5% of all CO2, the rest is natural. The real question is does it have any real effect on global temperature, and so far the evidence says no.

CO2 dramatically increased in the last 10 years as global temps have gone down, contrary to the IPCC models. There is no causation, so all the hysteria is misguided.

The evidence is clear. The debate is over. The science is settled. Cro-Magnon Man loved his 8 passenger Suburban. But, at least they had Geico.

OMG! Don't these people ever shut up? They cannot know; they are projecting. The sea levels are probably rising--change is what geological history is all about. Man burning fossil fuels AIN'T making it happen.

It's been a long time since geology class; but I remember there were glaciers-they melted-Texas and Oklahoma eventually were covered by tropical seas.Probably only took a few hundred thousand years.

"Larger rises cannot be excluded but understanding of these effects is too limited to assess their likelihood," the IPCC report stated.

In other words “We really don’t have any idea what is going to happen but if we told you that we wouldn’t get our government research grants.”

Well gosh, in my view it's gonna fall by hundreds of cubits. So there.

An respectable volcano puts more greenhouse gases into the air than all of mankind’s processes. The biggest greenhouse gas is water vapor. What will these idiots suggest we do about that?

So what’s normal? High tides that cover 1/3 of the US, or the current situation?
