What has happened to Bruce Barlett (vanity)
Vanity | July 7, 2009 | Me

What the hell has happened to Bruce Bartlett? This guy at one point was a dedicated Reaganite. Nowadays, his columns vary from endorsing a VAT to pay for big government, lecturing Republicans that they need to 'get real and accept the welfare state', attacking the tea party protesters as 'partisans', trashing Republicans for not offering an alternative to the stimulus (in reality they did). Bartlett has essentially told Republicans to 'give up' on pushing for lower taxes because that's not realistic. He's also attempted to make the case that Washington can raise taxes on people now because 'people enjoy the services they get from government', and also points out that people in foreign countries don't mind higher taxes because they get free government healthcare, among other things.

What happened to this guy? He sounds more like Rahm Emanuel than Ronald Reagan these days. His Forbes columns are nauseating.

I notice he no longer contributes to National Review, The American Spectator or The Weekly Standard.

It's highly unusual, but it happens. Bartlett is now affiliated with "People for the American Way", if that tells you anything. I have a theory though, based on some of his recent work. Two words: David Brock. Same reason.

I have my suspicions. He's 57 years old, never married (as far as I can determine), a former Republican who wrote a book about Bush betraying the Reagan Revolution, only to turn around two years later and declare his support for Barack Obama. He's also a former supply-sider and Heritage Foundation member who now argues that taxes are not too high. It's just an observation, but people who change that radically at such an age tend to have unresolved conflicts in their lives.

I’d bet he’d let one soak until the swelling went down.

"He's also a former supply-sider"

Are you saying that at the same time he went from the "supply-side" to the "demand-side" he went from "top" to "bottom"?

I mean to suggest only that Mr. Bartlett may now be playing for the other team.
