Pool Boots Kids Who Might "Change the Complexion" (Black kids kicked out)
NBC ^ | july 8, 2009 | Karen Araiza

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.

"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?' She's like, 'I'm scared they might do something to my child,'" said camper Dymire Baylor.

The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1900 to The Valley Swim Club. The Valley Swim Club is a private club that advertises open membership. But the campers' first visit to the pool suggested otherwise.

I was at this event. The children in question were unruly, tearing up the place and the parents were not accountable. instead they wanted to cry race where none existed. Control your brats and juvenile delinquents and don’t cry race when your lack of being a parent ins the worst offense of the entire event. The the black gal who kept crying we won’t go...guess you went. Now go ruin your own hoods complexion. Not ours, we paid

They had paid for the membership. (When reading the story note how the club offered to return the membership fees)

If Jesse Jackson had one of his illegitimate kids in a private pool when 60 inner city kids jumped in, I’m guessing he’d pull his kid out of the water too.

Does anyone really believe attendants told the kids “we don’t allow blacks here”

Waiting for more info

Excuse me, condemn a private club for deciding who it allows to be members or use its facilities? I think not.

I don’t have to agree with someones decisions, but a private club has every right to decide who can and who cannot be members or use their facilities by any criteria they choose.

Biggots want to form a club and hang amongst themselves and call themselves the KKK that’s fine as long as they aren’t physically assaulting other folks. Mentally ill folks want to form a club and hang out amongst themselves and call it a gay bath house.. as long as they aren’t assaulting other folks, they are free to do so.

I don’t agree with a lot of folks decisions, but I’m not going to condemn them for it, their club, their decision. If you aren’t a member of the club, then frankly its none of your damned business or concern either.

Then you do not believe in the freedom of association.

If one cannot choose with whom they want to associate with, then there is no freedom.

I don’t know if it happened, but it certainly could have. Its a PRIVATE club, it is free to refuse membership to anyone it wants to.

The hunt club out by Irwin has the same policy, and has no issues telling anyone who asks blacks may not be members.

You don’t have to like it, but its their right to associate with who they want or don’t want to, and allow membership to who they do or don’t want to.

I think we should CONDEMN it, but not make it illegal.

People should ALWAYS have the freedom to associate with anyone they want, but the state should have no part in preventing or promoting it.

You both forget one thing, and that is they rented it out to the organization.

Hey, I am in agreement. They can do whatever they want. I didn’t suggest they can’t. But when something stinks, it stinks, and I reserve the right to say so.

I don’t agree.

“Gentleman’s Agreement” was a ground-breaking film, but people shoule ALWAYS be free to PRIVATELY associate with whom they want, FOR ANY REASON AT ALL.

When the government gets into discrimination, we’ve got a problem.
When government tries to control our personal/private discriminations, we’ve got a problem as well.

You reserve the right to say something stinks, and they reserve the right to refuse admittance. Funny how respecting others rights doesn’t always leave a good taste in ones mouth, far too many people think it should.

Sorry, then you are functionally ignorant of the very foundations of western civilization and the American Ideal.

Private property rights and freedom of association are at the fundamental root of a free society. Someone is free to be biggotted against someone else for whatever reason they choose, don’t have to like it, but that’s reality.

A private club certainly has every right to decide who may be members and who can or cannot use its property, its really no more complicated than that. You may not like their decisions, but your desires have absolutely no right to have any influence on theirs.

If some private club says hey, no Jews, no Muslims, no Gays, No wasps, no Blacks, no Asians, no Hispanics, no Whites, no people with piercings, no people with vestigial nipples.... or whatever, that’s their right. Individuals are free to associate with whoever they want, and not associate with whoever they want and you nor the government, nor anyone else has any right to tell them otherwise.

A business or public accomidation fine, but a private club? Absolutely has every right to admit or deny whoever the hell they want for whatever reason they want.

“You don’t think private clubs should be able to exclude people because of their race?”

I think I wouldn’t want to associate with someone who doesn’t want to associate with someone because of their race.

“... FOR ANY REASON AT ALL...”

Including treason? Including terrorist attack planning? Your understanding of the law and of the Constitution are obviously limited. Have fun being a libertarian, you are certainly no conservative

You still haven’t addressed the issue of the club renting out the place to an inner city Day Camp.

And yes, I think discrimination in any form should be condemned.

Be sure to include Al Capone and his boys. They freely chose to associate with each other.

Some folks just plain don’t get it. They are bigots and there is no excusing that

“If true, this stinks.”

I tend to believe the black parents. This is not really unusual. In most cases it is the white parents that DO instill racism in their children. And seeing that this was an elite Swim Club it does not surprise me at all. Just my opinion.

I have a childhood that gave me the experiences to see this type of racism. Lived in Princeton and most of my childhood friends were black as Princeton Elementary was predominently black. We moved to Arlington, VA and it was like entering a totally racist “movie” for me. It was the first day that the junior high was allowing black kids into the school and my blonde haired, blue-eyed, History teacher, Mr. Harper wore a red KKK band on his upper arm over his shirt and he was only “suspended” for 3 days. He taught us a totaly different Civil War History (the South shall rise again, etc) and at dinner my parents were flabbergasted when I told them my daily experiences at school. I have seen much racism around the world as my father was a high ranking naval officer and we lived all over the world.

For people to think that this does not still exist is a bit naive on their part.
