Dallas has scaled back some of the police protection it was providing at the home of former President George W. Bush — a cut some said was due to financial constraints.
The city has been struggling with a $190 million budget deficit.

The SS protects him. From the article, it sounds as though the problem is the logistical assignments that patrol his neighborhood or keep people from crowding around his home.
We pay for the SS protection. That is Federal. This is Municipal.
President Bush and Laura can afford whatever they think they need. If they need crowd control, they can help the economy by employing someone. We have friends who were retired military, who lost their savings in the crash and are now working all sorts of of security or have joined Xe.
How good would reluctant protectors, such as Dallas PD be, anyway?

It should be up to the individual discretion of the past president. If they wish to contribute, fine. If they do not wish, the whole bill should be on Uncle Sam. This is one thing I don’t mind the taxes for.
I did read the article. Apparently the Secret Service needed the extra help or they would not have asked the police to help to begin with. The whole thing stinks to high heaven.
This is Obama’s fault. If the Secret Service had provided the proper protection to begin with, the local cops would not have been needed.
Take a chill pill folks. It is not Dallas PD’S responsibility to protect Mr Bush. If the secret service needs any help DPD will be there in force.

Exactly, it's not the DPD's job, it's the Secret Service's job, and they work for Obama. If DPD provides some services they should be compensated by the federal government. The costs need to come out of the federal budget, not that of Dallas, Dallas County, or the State of Texas. (Unless he's entitled to some protection as a former governor of course).
Of course for the Feds to pay for it, they'd have to cut somewhere, maybe Michelle would have to make do with only 10 staffers, instead of 20, maybe the Census bureau could remove a couple of questions from next years survey. That would likely save billions. Better yet, leave only four questions. "How many people live at this residence. What are their names? What are their ages? What is their realtionship, in one term, to the head of the household? That's still more than the Constituton requires. If funds are still tight, eliminate the last question, then the second, and finally the 3rd. The Constitution only authorizes an "enumeration", IOW, a count.
It was in the Dallas Morning News. Fox just picked up the story and yes...it was VERY WRONG!
