Fiorina Seems To Be Prepping For A Bout With Boxer

Fiorina seems to be prepping for a bout with Boxer

Former Hewlett-Packard chief and McCain economic advisor seems to be getting ready to seek the Republican nomination for the senator's job in 2010.

Michael Finnegan July 8, 2009.

Carly Fiorina, whose rocky tenure as chief executive of Hewlett Packard ended with her firing, is making serious preparations to run next year for the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).

Fiorina's candidacy would be her first foray into elective politics and would turn California's Senate contest into one of the most closely watched in 2010.

In a state that tilts strongly toward Democrats, Boxer would still be favored to win a fourth term, polls suggest.

But Fiorina, a top economic advisor to John McCain in the 2008 presidential race, would be the wealthiest Republican ever to face the Democratic incumbent, making her a more serious threat than previous rivals.

Fiorina's personal fortune -- her HP severance alone exceeded $21 million after six years as chief executive -- ensures she could run a full-scale campaign.

If Fiorina won the GOP nomination, she would also be the first woman to challenge Boxer, a milestone for a state Republican Party that has rarely fielded female candidates for high office.

Most voters in California are women, and Boxer's appeals to women have been a cornerstone of her 17-year tenure in the Senate. This year, Boxer was outspoken in urging President Obama to nominate a woman to the Supreme Court, as he ultimately did.

Adding another unusual dimension to the campaign: Fiorina, 54, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February. Since then, she has undergone chemotherapy; an aide described her prognosis now as "very good."

Fiorina has kept a low public profile for months but...

Ugh. Fiorina is going to lose big. She epitomizes the uncaring CEO who trashes a good company and destroys the lives of ordinary working people.

I wonder how much Sen. Boxer is paying her to run?

Sorry that you are going through cancer treatment Carly but stay the hell away from the senate.
Good grief you nearly destroyed HP and why would we want you in government?

oh, how I hope so !!

The idea that Boxer wins on the women’s vote is funny to me. I don’t think of her as a woman. There is NOTHING feminine about her.

Give the woman a break. You are saying that you would rather have Barbara Boxer talk to our generals that way for another six years? I will go out of my way to vote for anyone who runs against Barbara "Senator" Boxer. ANYONE! I can't believe that freepers are so stupid, so you must be a DU troll. There is no other explanation.

I think Ms. Carly should not run on Republican ticket, she should run as a democrat. She destroyed a once good company and help with job exporting to India.

Now this is funny

McCain effectively exiled Fiorina after she told a radio station that his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, was unqualified to be a chief executive -- then added later that so were McCain and those on the Democratic ticket, Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

She sure knows how to make friends and influence people, almost a Darwin Award winner here.

And you are an idiot.
Do you even know who Carly is?
She took a viable steady growth company and nearly destroyed it.
The only difference between Carly and Boxer is Carly is taller.
Unless you know who she is and worked under her stupidity you really need to lighten up.

People at HP hated her and many people said she destroyed “Bill & Dave’s” company. The Deutsche Bank deal she did in her proxy fight with bill’s son earned her a lot of enemies. She also parachuted out of Lucent just before the billing sales fraud thing blew up.

There are lots of them living as real live FReepers.
None of them have ever held a hand of cards.

They would rather have had
Obamao than McCain, or
Obamao than Romeny, or
Kerry than Bush.
and I bet even RR wasn’t grand entough at the time.

If Carly would vote Conservative or Republican even ONE time, it would be preferrable for California than a 100% leftist.

Destroyed a company?

Under Carly, HP was positioned and then became the worlds largest PC maufacturer and it overtook Dell.

If she had’nt done the tough changes, HP would have gone the same way as Gateway 2000. She took some tough decisions to restructure the company. This is how companies operate, not the socialist BS logic you are talking about.

Carly Fiorina is highly talented and qualified.

What?
HP operated debt free, slow and steady with good profit margin.
She ran with consumer PCs low profit and wide speculation, stock 98 when she was hired and 16 when she was fired.
HP was not a low profit PC company...............never mind if you think Carly was good for HP there is no reasoning with you.

Look at the stock price of Dell and HP, the past few years will show you the difference.

When the tech recession hit in the early 2000, HP was reeling from the drop in sales and it had to merge and Carly took the tough decisions then that led to the Compaq merger.

A CEO is best remembered for the position she leaves the company, look at HP now, it is financially sound and not as mismanaged as you falsely proclaim.

Carly is well qualified to run for senator.

Ok, evidently you know nothing of HP.
They did not make their money in PCs with low margin.
Carly made HP just like any other low margin PC company.
It appears your time frame starts with Carly rather than the long and steady history HP had.
Carly is not fit to be a dog catcher, hence the reason she has been unemployed since she was fired from HP.

Thomas Friedman thinks she's a genius. In "The World is Flat" quotes her throughout the book.

I'd vote for her over Boxer, but I also voted McCain over 0bama. It's like a choice between herpes and AIDS. I don't want either, but if I had to make a choice, it's pretty clear which one I'd take.

Look , I know people who got layed off from the HP shakedown in 2001-2003 period and there is lot of bitterness but thats how this economy operates.

As i said, companies take tough decisions to keep them in good shape, the HP-Compaq merger implemented by Carly was a strategically brilliant move and made sure HP did not end up like a Palm or Gateway.

The proof is in the pudding, If Fiorina did such a bad job as you claim the company currently will not be in a good position.

HP overtook Dell in market share in 2006, within a few months of Fiorina leaving her position, this is testimony to the strategy that Fiorina pushed through.

I am not related to Fiorina or even any worked in that company.

It is obvious that the merger that Fiorina pushed through put HP in a better competitve spot, if you deny that you need to a take course in business.
