Sarah Palin (Gulp!) Still Could Become GOP 2012 Nominee
Roll Call ^ | July 9, 2009 | Morton Kondracke

Posted on 07/08/2009 9:19:37 PM PDT by Plutarch

It used to be easy to predict who the next Republican presidential nominee would be. It was decided by primogeniture: The next oldest guy in line got to be the king.

It’s not so easy looking to 2012, with former Vice President Dick Cheney out of the running and a woman, soon-to-be former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, in.

And I do believe she’s in — damaged in her chances, maybe, but fully intending to make a run and very popular with the shrinking hard core of the GOP.

In the Democratic Party, primogeniture sometimes applies, as with Adlai Stevenson in 1956 and incumbent or former Vice Presidents Hubert Humphrey in 1968, Walter Mondale in 1984 and Al Gore in 2000.

But, just as often, a candidate will come from relative, or not-so-relative, obscurity and seize the nomination, such as John F. Kennedy in 1960, George McGovern in 1972, Jimmy Carter in 1976, Michael Dukakis in 1988, Bill Clinton in 1992 and Barack Obama in 2008.

In the Republican Party, however, there’s a rigid history of “follow the leader.”...

____________________________________________

Does she have a chance to get nominated? You betcha. She’s attractive, charismatic, ambitious, tough to the point of ruthlessness and smart, if still woefully ignorant.

Before she announced her resignation, she was tied in a CNN poll with 2008 candidates Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee and a Pew poll showed that she had an 85 percent approval rating among conservatives and white evangelicals, to 52 percent for Romney.

My bet is that primogeniture still works — sort of — and that Palin, Romney or Huckabee, familiar faces, will outrun national newcomers like Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels...

A small group of freepers ran into ole Mort coming out of the state Capitol in Austin years ago. He had just interviewed George Bush who had just declared he was running for president, or maybe he had just been named the nominee--I can't remember now.

Mort was all a-twitter because he had gotten to do the first interview.

He calmed down a bit when one of us told him he had a huge bugger hanging from his nose, though.

I'm sorry--I just had to "share" this story, and giggle a bit as I was typing---LOL!

I agree, but it feels as though they are starting to consider the possibility of a 2012 Palin run. I suspect that as she begins to work in the lower 48, and her presence start being truly felt, many of these conservative commentators will want to ‘jump on the bandwagon’, more or less. This will start by them giving ‘advice’.

Mort is a moron. He speaks about all Zero’s talent and qualifications at the end of the article, but belittles Sarah’s far superior experience throughout. BO couldn’t organize a two car parade without his teleprompter and handlers. That is why all his town hall meetings and press conferences are staged events with softball questions, often planted.

Mort and Fred said conservatives were crazy for:

Opposing Guest Worker Programs

Opposing Auto Bailouts

Opposing Financial Service Bailouts

If polls suggest 40% of conservatives are for her, that's not a high number.

Right now, the media seems fixated on the higher number of independents who are against her.

I think she will create her own party too, she pretty much said it yesterday during her interviews when she said how some Republicans have been calling wanting to give her advice and she has told them “thanks but no thanks” she wants nothing to do with the Elitists inside the beltway, she never needed them, neither did Reagan, why would she want to hang out with people who are too stupid to understand Middle America

Another teachable moment - Kondrake’s an elitist, a member of the right country clubs, graduate of the right universities, with the right connections to schmooze and hobnob with others of his “smarter than thou” class. The common thread in all these Palin put-downs and smarmy snipe attacks is always elitism, not party or issue.

Has she been savaged? She has. Clearly Palin-hatred is rampant in the media, the left-wing blogosphere, the Democratic Party and parts of the McCain campaign staff.

Sarah Palin could send the MSM employees, et al into orbit -- if they don't explode on liftoff.

Brother Dave Gardner used to tell the story of the motorcyclist (Junior, I believe) who pulled up behind a truck going up a narrow two-lane mountain road.

There was a sticker on the truck that read, I MAY BE SLOW BUT I'M AHEAD OF YOU!

Oh that did it! Without looking off he went around that truck for the last thing he ever did . . . .

Palin should routinely tell the MSM employees hounding her everywhere she goes, "I may be slow but you're here to interview me. No one is interviewing you."

Reagan used to drive the 1960s street (and campus) rabble crazy because they could circle him shouting and threatening and it would not disturb him one bit.

I think Gov. Palin has that same confident coolness.

If Sarah wants to crash the party in Washington, all she has to do is call a press conference and whip out her birth certificate. Use her little sing-songy voice to say,

“Do you know how long it took me to get my birth certificate in the mail after requesting it? Two days. Do you know how much time after that to let you see its authenticity? I just did. Note the official seal right here.”

“Now, even as we women are not fond of telling people our age, this is the sort of transparency our voters expect, not leaders who hide birth certificates in vaults, not congresspeople to pass laws that nobody had read because it hadn’t even been written or submitted. Is that your idea of open government?”

“You know, you don’t have to be a Republican to demand that your government have at least the transparency to make the president’s birth certificate available to the media or to insist bills are written before they are put to a vote. Wouldn’t you agree? Any questions?”

She could tease them even further by telling the media beforehand she had a “major announcement” to make and then whip out the birth certificate because you KNOW most of the news channels would break in live expecting the announcement to be about something else.

Sarah can use their breathless stupidity against the lib media while they are still hanging on her every word. It would be so delicious and get the base to fall all over themselves in support of her.

It’s beyond the point of risibility to point out to libs like Kondracke that however inexperienced Palin is on foreign or national affairs compared to some other Pubbies, she’s still far smarter than the liberal ignoramuses like Obama and Biden and the rest who flunk basic economics and worst of all reality. Today’s libs have a child-like view of how the free-market system and the cruel world work.

When he calls Palin “ignorant,” Mort is talking about the fact that she doesn’t know anything about the Washington elite social circuit.

What he doesn’t realize is that sort of “ignorance” is one of Palin’s greatest strengths.

Sarah Palin (Gulp!) Still Could Become GOP 2012 Nominee

She could. But in the process she will be ripped apart, slandered, have her family and their actions scrutinized, her actions in light of numerous Alaskan ethics investigations questioned, her quitting the governorship made an issue, and her position on virtually everything doubted. And that's just by the half a dozen or so Republicans who will be doing their best to ensure that they are the nominee, and not Palin. If she survives that and gets the nomination then the fun really begins.

But I thought that she said that a big reason why she was leaving the governorship was the attacks and the back-biting and the bitter politics and the cost to her family, yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, she ain't seen nothing yet. It's going to be many times worse in the months ahead. And that's just from her fellow Republicans.
