The 50th anniversary this year of the shooting of Hitchcock's film Psycho will be employed to demonstrate how a one-minute shower will help conserve water and the environment.
The Royal Society of Chemistry is seeking a lookalike of Janet Leigh, who played the part of Norman Bates' shower victim in the celebrated horror movie.
The RSC is to make a tasteful video, called Shower Murder, to go on its website to illustrate how a shower can be taken effectively in just 60 seconds, so avoiding the huge wastage of water and the contamination that many in Britain cause currently.
RSC chief executive Dr Richard Pike said today: "Our video will also compare the amount of water that is being used by some people taking notoriously long showers, and will spell out and quantify, through laboratory analysis, the kind of substances that are washed down the plughole by prolonged soaping and repeated application of gels and shampoos.
"It is these that are placing an increasing demand upon the purification processes within the water networks."
A survey of shower habits amongst Europeans conducted recently for the RSC revealed that the British are guilty as charged when it comes to wasting water through showering.
Women in Britain are particularly culpable, says the report for the Royal Society of Chemistry.
In contrast, the French and Spanish emerge most commendably from the survey, demonstrating greater restraint in water conservation and concern about washing contaminants into the water system.
Dr Pike added: "We want to promote the fact that this is not just about water - a valuable commodity in itself - but also the link to saving energy, preserving the environment and ensuring that this same water can be used in food manufacture, or drunk safely a short time later."

My cat drinks shower water and hasn't croaked yet.
These people need to get a life.
If they send Anthony Perkins to my house with a knife, I will definitely limit my shower time to less than 1 minute.
If anyone wants to make a million dollars, manufacture a device that will play the soundtrack from the Psycho shower scene every time you turn the water on. The sell them to the British government.
I once wrote a scifi story with a regulation one-minute shower mentioned.
Maybe because French and Spanish women don’t shave — imaginge the water savings there.
The end-game for the enviro-nuts is a return to the Dark Ages. No light. No heat. No hot water.
Maybe they brush their teeth whilst showering. That would explain the long showers.
My parents have a bizarre looking doll from when my sister and I were kids. Years ago on a visit my, at the time, young teen son absolutely hated the thing; It has Chucky look to it. Once when son was showering I took the doll and held a kitchen knife in it’s and and hoisted it up above the shower door and started screeching the Psycho shower scene sound. He freaked. The memory is good for a laugh every time we visit the folk’s place.
You are one sick person, but I must be also because that is one funny story. Years ago - after the Alien movie came out - I saw that an Alien live action figure was being sold. Had the ratcheting jaws/teeth and everything. About 15 inches in height. I told one of my brothers that I thought about buying it and putting it in his bedroom. He said if he survived the heart attack, he would find me and kick my arse.
The folks another relic of us kid’s past which is a life size, little girl doll about 3-4’ tall that my sister had sometime in the mid 50’s. This one looks like one out of a horror movie also and my son hated it too. Got to the point I was terrorizing him with it so much he asked my mom to hide it. On another visit, I guess he was 16 or 17 then, I found it and slid it into his bed beside him as he was sleeping one night. He didn’t appreciate that one either!
The folks = The folks have
greater restraint in water usage = horrifyingly, bad smell.
Examine all their policies and goals,
and what you’ll find is that they would return us to a feudalistic system,
where they, the elite neo-nobles, own and control every resource,
and we, the peasants, live and die at their pleasure.
Coming soon progressive water rates... Use 1000 gallons $25, 3000 gallons $250.
That explains a lot...
My daughter had one of those when she was small, it could wear her clothes. We had named it "Talky Tina" after the doll in the Twilight Zone episode "Living Doll". The neighbor lady came over one day and told us to keep it away from the window, it was scaring her kids. We were traveling one time and it was on the back car window ledge and we got pulled over, the cop thought it was a real kid, LOL!
What about New York City cab drivers? They probably average less than 5 seconds of showering per month.
I probably took a 20 minute shower on the day many years ago when Anthony Perkins got in my cab. NYC has a great water supply.
