It's Not Just a Recession. It's a Mancession!
The Atlantic ^ | Jul 9 2009 | Derek Thompson

What is a mancession, you ask? It's a recession that hurts men much more than women, and we are allegedly in the worst mancession in recent history. Eighty percent of job losses in the last two years were among men, said AEI scholar Christina Hoff Summers, and it could get worse.

Here some graphs provided by Mark Perry, an economist from the University of Michigan who coined the term mancession that, with any luck, is not long for our world. Unfortunately this trend doesn't look to be reversing itself any time soon.

How do we explain this? The decline in manufacturing jobs is certainly one thing. Greg Mankiw adds another likely explanation: Residential construction, which boomed during the early part of this decade, has been eviscerated in the housing slump. Nine out of ten construction workers are male, and seven out of ten manufacturing workers are men. Those sectors alone have lost more than 2.5 million jobs.

On the other hand, many women are in industries that aren't facing such devastating, and possibly permanent, upheaval. I keep coming back to this graph about net jobs created in the last ten years in the health and education sectors:

Yes. That's because, to the Leftists who have overtaken every area of our Government, men (mainly white men) are the most evil of people. Zero's Admin and his minions care not what happens to men, particularly white men, as women are superior in every way.

Just look at Hillary! and Michelle......aren't they the epitome of femininity?? Doesn't EVERY young girl aspire to be Hillary! or Michelle??? /s

Feminists are always complaining that Women earn less than Men. Maybe they kept their jobs because they were the lower-cost employees!

Who's complaining now?

It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job.
A depression when you lose yours.
And a recovery when Obama loses his.

This opinion piece was in our local newspaper today. Our valley is Conservative but most of the news writers are Leftists (surprise), although this guy always claims he is ‘middle-of-the-road’. His writings are usually pretty Left. Interesting and sad for women these days.

It’s time to get those women barefoot and pregnant and back into the kitchen feeding babies.

Thanks. I used to be a fringe Feminist. I grew up when I realized that Feminists aren’t really for all women, just Leftist women and Leftist causes. The women of this world should wake up to the fact that men and women ARE different and viva la difference!

Hmmm. Did you leave off the sarcasm tag? That's fine for women who want to do that. Choice should mean that whatever a woman wants to do with her life, work or stay home, should be respected the same.

They only earn less because they are, typically, in different jobs. It's what sorts of jobs that have been lost, not the plumbing of the people holding them that has raised the male unemployment rate.

That said, it doesn't bode well for the future. Extending the "no men needed" model of the welfare ghettos to the working population.

Wonder if this skews ethnically (e.g., “Latino” immigrant construction workers)?

All of the women have already lost their high-paying jobs when the textile and garment industries went abroad back in the 70’s.
