Runway rename as North Pole moves.... (Pole Shift & Pole Reversal in 2012)

Stansted Airport in Essex has renamed its 3,000m (9,750ft) runway because the position of the Earth's magnetic North Pole has moved. The runway was known by pilots and air traffic controllers as 23/05 because of its location and compass heading. The magnetic North Pole drifts naturally, and every 50 years its position alters significantly. Managers at Stansted decided they must call the runway 22/04 to reflect the new position and bearing. Trevor Waldock, head of airside operations, said: "We've had to make this change due to the Magnetic North Pole slowly drifting on the Earth's surface but our runway remains in a fixed position. "It'll roughly be another 56 years before we have to consider changing it again. "Redesignating the runway at a busy international airport, such as Stansted, presents a number of complex challenges, so we've had a programme of works specially organised to minimise any disruption to normal operations." The project, which took place at night, was completed on 5 July and included the replacement of all airfield signage and the repainting of the huge numbers at each end of the runway. The magnetic North Pole will continue to drift until it eventually switches with the magnetic South Pole. The Earth last went through this an estimated 780,000 years ago. With time, due to the Magnetic North Pole moving south, the Northern Lights will be more regularly visible in the UK.

Cant you just hear some nimrod blaming the fact that the position of the Earth’s magnetic North Pole has moved on global warming?

There is some evidence of this. Its called the South Atlantic Anomaly. There is evidence that the geomagnetic field is weakening here. The SAA is produced by a "dip" in the Earth's magnetic field at that location, caused by the fact that the center of Earth's magnetic field is offset from its geographic center by 280 miles.

The Earth will switch it’s poles completely, once the Sun does the same.
It happens all the time (geologic time).
The main effect is that compasses will have to be reversed.

The problem is that the earth’s magnetic field will gradually weaken during the north to south switch. This will cause solar radiation to penetrate the atmosphere which could have a detriment effect to life on earth. This switch process may take hundreds of years.

Nahhh.... nothing like that has ever happened.

It could cause the heavens to pour out their waterAssuming you refer to the "waters above the firmament", these are not OF the heavens, but ABOVE the heavens, conceived of as a dome, or "vault".
These conceptions are no longer possible for anyone, including you, to seriously entertain as a physical reality.

I thought runways were based on true north, not magnetic north? All that is changing is the magnetic declination, once that is corrected for, there should be no problem.
Or, I am confused......
To: Old Professer
In some remote corner of the universe, poured out and glittering in innumerable solar systems, there once was a star on which clever animals invented knowledge. That was the highest and most mendacious minute of "world history"yet only a minute. After nature had drawn a few breaths the star grew cold, and the clever animals had to die.
One might invent such a fable and still not have illustrated sufficiently how wretched, how shadowy and flighty, how aimless and arbitrary, the human intellect appears in nature. There have been eternities when it did not exist; and when it is done for again, nothing will have happened.... a lot of people like this one, check it.

There are three kinds of north: celestial north (axis of rotation, points at our current pole star, Polaris), magnetic north, and “map” north as determined by converging lines of longitude.
To: thecodont
In aviation, its true north and mag north, true north being the actual location of the north pole. Compasses are corrected for mag dec to get true north so there should be no problem if the mag dec is changed in accordance with the mag pole shift. Something just doesn’t seem right here.

These conceptions are no longer possible for anyone, including you, to seriously entertain as a physical reality. So, it's just my imagination that the atmosphere constantly retains a certain amount of H2O? And that the ability to retain it could be lost due to changes in the magnetic field and exposure to effects from the sun?

But how could any of this relate to "the waters above the firmament" ?

I’m not a pilot, but the magnetic declination is different for every place on earth to find True North. However, your compass ALWAYS points to magnetic north no matter where you are. It would seem to me that pilots would have to refer to magnetic north, or they would be constantly having to correct for true north.
And so perhaps the runways are named with a reference to magnetic north. If they were named with reference to true north - that would never change. On an old survey map, true north is still the same true north. You would need to look up the mag. declination to figure out how to set your compass, but the true north line on the map is ALWAYS true north.

The pole is actually shifting as we speak albeit to such a minor degree that we would never notice during our lifetimes. The North Magnetic Pole is slowly drifting across the Canadian Arctic. But it happens because we have the rocks to prove that has happened. Some speculate that a greatly diminished magnetic field during a reversal period will expose the surface of the earth to a substantial and potentially damaging increase in cosmic radiation.

It’s making a beeline for true north. What does it know?
On a related note, Mr. Waldock points out “our runway remains in a fixed position.” I’m glad he pointed that out. I was fearful that UK “shovel ready” jobs dug up a perfectly good runway and repaved it with a one degree correction. (Think I should pass that idea to Obama?)
To: 21twelve
Exactly. Pilots adjust their compasses to correct for mag dec as they travel long distances. They also have to adjust their altimeter to correct for changing atomospheric pressure.

"the waters above the firmament" (depends on what you mean by firmament)
The relationship is this: Could a change in the magnetosphere influence in a drastic way the ability of the atmosphere to retain water?
Additionally, could it vary the amount of water that Earth gains from space.
