L.A. Won't Save Jobs Without Fair Play
IBD Editorials ^ | July 13, 2009 | RICK NEWCOMBE

A week ago, I didn't know Sean Hannity beyond the television personality. Recent events, however, brought us together through our shared philosophy that freedom and the rule of law, rather than arbitrary and inconsistent actions by government bureaucrats, provide the foundation for economic prosperity.

I wrote a column that appeared in the Wall Street Journal last Friday telling the story of how the city of Los Angeles has unfairly harassed my business, Creators Syndicate. Hannity invited me on his show to talk about it, and I knew I had an ally.

Creators had a tax dispute with the city 15 years ago. We spent a small fortune on lawyers and suffered through a series of administrative meetings until finally we had a hearing before the city's Board of Review — the last stop in the appeals process, where rulings are final.

In 1994, we received a ruling in our favor and, relying on that ruling, decided to stay in L.A.

Two years ago, city auditors suddenly announced that rulings are only final for taxpayers — not for the city. They forced us to hire more lawyers, to attend more meetings and to endure yet another Board of Review hearing.

12 years after the “final” ruling it was brought back?? Talk about the living dead.

Why would anyone do business that way?

Newcombe (if you are listening), don't waste your time in the cesspool otherwise known as LA proper. LA is for all practical purposes a third world city. Get the best deal out of LA you can and pull up stakes. LA deserves to collapse and will collapse into a Tijuana like existence. Nothing can stop that now. LA (and other parts of SOCAL) will one day in the not so distant future, NOT be part of the United States. This is a virtual certainty. We probably could have prevented this as late as the mid 1980's but there's no stopping the forces of demographics and history.

Northern California might make it but the odds are against them as well. They have a better chance than SOCAL. Get out while you can.

Just move out of LA.

You know that's what is going to happen anyway.

The best thing for Californians would be to move out of the state and never look back

I read this man’s article and then listened to him on Hannity’s program. He is a truly good person and is now experiencing what many others have at the hands of local government.

One could really write a book.

You realize that we won CA fair and square from Mexico, right?

So we should just give it up and not fight like our ancestors did?

I disagree.

The 1200 conservatives who are there can move out, and join the rest of us.

The rest (scum sucking libs) can stay there, and enjoy the sewer they have created.

Your guy leaned on Pete Wilson to drop his support for prop. 187 and openly and cluelessly opposed the measure while he was governor of Texas. The subsequent disappearing of prop 187 helped balloon the numbers of illegals in the state, drove out good people who didn’t want to deal with the consequences and helped usher in a new group of politicians in the state like the current mayor of LA, the previous Assembly speaker and *countless* other pro-illegal alien dirtbags like them. While your guy was president for 8 years, he looked the other way entirely and actually pursued things like mass legalization while naysaying enforcement, pushing the state even closer to banana republic-hood. This is his California legacy. “Bullshiete” indeed. Up to our necks.

Whatever money LA might make on this post-hoc ruling (which is probably unconstitutional), they’ve already lost more thanks to the bad PR about their anti-business attitude.

Witness the stupidity of leftist statism once again...

Well said. The problem is that the leftscum will flee the sewer they have created and then infect their new homes with the same disease - leftist statism.

In fact have a former friend who did just that. Fled to Washington state from CA because of the anti-business and high tax environment, and then proceeded to vote for zero and every other leftscum. What a moron, and what an azz for helping to wreck his new home...

Not that it had, given the current Gov’s propensity to become the northernmost Californian county, all that far to go towards being wrecked.

What’s really bad is that the California equity bandits move to Seattle, and then those bandits move to Eastern WA...

Newcombe is president of Creators Syndicate, which distributes not only Michael Ramirez's editorial cartoons, but columnists including Thomas Sowell, Lawrence Kudlow, Walter Williams, Michael Barone, Patrick Buchanan, Michelle Malkin, Phyllis Schlafly, Larry Elder and Brent Bozell, all of whom appear regularly in IBD.

Gol-ly! It must just be a coincidence that Creator's Syndicate distributes conservative writers and cartoonists!!!!

I notice most of his clients are conservative. Could that have something to do with it?
