Supreme Court nominee returns for a third and final day of questioning Thursday, having avoided saying much on a range of hot-button issues, including guns and abortion.
As witnesses prepare to take the stand Thursday in Sonia Sotomayor's last day of confirmation hearings, the chairman of the Senate Juduciary Committee said their testimony will matter little.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said Wednesday that he may not ask any questions of the witnesses present at the Supreme Court nominee's hearing. Among the witnesses requested by the committee to testify are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Connecticut firefighters whom the federal court judge ruled against in the reverse discrimination case -- Ricci v. DeStefano -- that was overturned last month by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sotomayor had dismissed the claim of white firefighters in New Haven, Conn., who alleged racial discrimination over the city's decision to scrap a promotions exam after too few minorities did well.
Leahy said he can recall only a handful of witnesses in his tenure on the panel who've made an impact.
"I doubt if I have much of any questions for either -- for the witnesses for or the witnesses against her -- because we're going to make up our mind based on what she said," he said.

He didn’t tell us a thing- just alot of words and platitudes.
She is doing the same thing. Her answers to Sen Coburn were a total joke.
His questions were quite pointed, IMO, and she kept saying she “couldn’t answer things in the abstract”.
Did she even attend any classes? Even with my limited education by comparison, I know she is stonewalling.
She also gets a bout of serious and continous eye fluttering whenever she is totally lying. Watch closely.
I learned years ago that is a sign of BIG lies.
