LOS ANGELES -- City Council chambers went dark early Wednesday after a man refused to remove his white robe and hood before speaking.
It was the second day that Michael Hunt wore the outfit to the meeting.
Hunt, an African American, submitted a card to speak during the standard public comment period and was called to the microphone by Councilman Dennis Zine, who was the presiding officer.
"Mr. Hunt, you're going to have to remove your hood," Zine told Hunt twice.
"Are you refusing to remove your hood? ... Mr. Hunt, we can't hear you. Remove your hood."
Hunt refused to remove the garb, citing his First Amendment rights.
When three African American councilmembers left -- apparently out of disgust -- the council floor was lost, ending the discussion.
It's not yet clear why Hunt was wearing the getup.
Hunt recently won a $260,000 settlement against the city challenging its vending ordinance in federal court as a violation of his rights.
Zine told KTLA he believes the latest stunt may be an attempt to sue the city again over a violation of his First Amendment rights.
"In this day and age, no one should be wearing that attire. No one should come to a public meeting wearing that attire and offend not only the councilmembers but the general public," Zine said.
The city council is now looking at adopting rules that would allow them to remove anyone who is disruptive during meetings, or wearing disruptive clothing such as Hunt's.
Haaaaaaaa.....haaaaaa......haaaaaa.......
This recalls the recent T-shirt cases in the public schools where the child was admonished and prohibited from wearing a T-shirt I think having to do with Christianity. But clearly a public forum explicitly arranged to hear the free speech of our citizens for the redress of their grievances is an entirely different matter.
It has been the tactic of the left to elevate the subjective feelings of those seeking to squelch free speech to a level which justifies infringing on that precious right. The left has succeeded in doing so here in Europe where there is now a 3000 fine for flipping another driver the bird. You better not insult the police officer either.
In the school T-shirt case the authorities also cited "disruption" as a justification.
Of course, once we concede that speech can be controlled because it is offensive or disruptive, we have entirely ceded control of speech to those who can pretend to offense or raise an outcry. We have surrendered utterly to subjectivism and we have lost our objective Constitutional rights.
Would it be okay if his wife attended the meetings wearing a hijab?
“Has anyone seen Mike Hunt?”
Classic. And that was on Chappelle’s first show.
Everything in this story sounds like something one might read in the Onion.
Or was he recalling Sheriff Bart boasting about stampeding cattle.
“That’s not much of a crime.”
“Through the VATICAN!!?”
“Kinky! Sign here....HUH!?”
;^)
Maybe they got his last name wrong. I though it was Huntstings.
“Hunt recently won a $260,000 settlement against the city challenging its vending ordinance in federal court as a violation of his rights.”
This piece of human scum is trolling for another payday on what’s left of the taxpayers in LA.
Paging I.C. Wiener.
All he has to do is say that it’s a hijab, and they will have to leave him alone. They don’t want to offend Islam.
Last seen with Mike Hawk?
That’s the first thing I thought of, too.
Best Dave Chappell skit ever!!
LOL
Looks like Mister Sunglasses there is making a cogent point as well — no doubt via “you know what I’m sayin’?” every third or fourth phrase, yo.
Still, I suppose One Eye could get the job done.
He was fantastic
A true talent. May he rest in peace.
LOL. Blazing Saddles. This real-life news story reads like a comedy routine.
