SAN DIEGO (July 17) - Jumbo flying squid — aggressive 5-foot-long sea monsters with razor-sharp beaks and toothy tentacles — have invaded the shallow waters off San Diego, spooking scuba divers and washing up dead on tourist-packed beaches.

Poor Californians!

Real life once again finds its way into the bubble, if only for a brief moment.

The calamari doesn't think you are tough at all.

Mmmmmmm, beak-watering swimmers.

Oh man. I just saw that video. If I encountered that underwater, I would likely crap my wetsuit.

(good thing I don’t dive, I guess)

I knew that the Navy population of that area was high but I thought they would at least stay in shape like the Marines do.

Thats it, letting all this nature loose in the ocean is just to dangerous. Where are the guys from Deadliest Catch. Give captain Sig a few smokes and no bag limit and he can have these bad boys on the dinner table by Wednesday. Or bring up those Japanese fisherman from Whale Wars. Come on we have opposable thumbs and some good recipes for Calamari, we can take these guys.

If they're like the squid we have in the Gulf of Mexico,, all the squid in a given school are the same size....mainly because the rest of the school will eat any of their members that are smaller or weaker.

Kinda' like liberals.

It may be a one year cycle, but they apparently start at different times or something as there is a wide variety in size. I've encountered schools of them near the surface at dawn that average about two feet long (and being devoured by a school of bonita) and other schools on the same trip that were about half that size.

* Word of warning....I had one bite me in the palm of my hand at the base of the thumb and his little beak took out a piece of flesh about the size of a match head. Not only did it hurt, it took a long time to heal...I guess it was just that fact that he took out a little chunk instead of just biting. I was out at night for flounder in a small boat and he miscalculated his jump and ended up in the boat with me. Even the little guys make great calamari if they are not sauteed too long. Most people over-cook them and they turn into leather. In this dog-eat-dog world, I thought it only fair that the squid that bit me became part of my lunch.

On a lighter note, as I looked out from the bridge and saw a couple of my deckhands "squid skating" on a wet deck. They tied squid onto the soles of their shoes and from there on they were "slime skating"....a lot like ice skating, proving that squid have many uses.
