Jimmy Carter Leaves Church Over Treatment of Women
Politics Daily ^ | July 20, 2009 | Ria Misra

Posted on 07/20/2009 12:49:32 PM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

After more than 60 years together, Jimmy Carter has announced himself at odds with the Southern Baptist Church -- and he's decided it's time they go their separate ways. Via Feministing, the former president called the decision "unavoidable" after church leaders prohibited women from being ordained and insisted women be "subservient to their husbands." Said Carter in an essay in The Age:

At its most repugnant, the belief that women must be subjugated to the wishes of men excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities.

And, later:

The truth is that male religious leaders have had -- and still have -- an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter. Their continuing choice provides the foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world.

This could only come from someone who has absolutely no understanding of the Bible.

Of course — he’s smarter than the scriptures.

This is what I thought...I remember the episode where he attended some environmental-friendly Baptist group meeting and said that he was going a different direction. My question....after he said he was leaving two years ago...did he just forget that and this is actual real end now? Or is this fake too, and a third episode will occur in two years?

But, but, but, but that means he can’t teach Baptist Sunday school anymore. And he needs that for his P.R. image, doesn’t he? He’s too old to swing a hammer and crawl around houses under construction by Habitat for Humanity, so he needs the Sunday School gig all the more.

What’s Jimmuh going to do if he can’t teach Sunday School anymore? Episcopalians don’t have Sunday School.

I guess he’ll have to make do with Madrassa guest lectures.

After more than 60 years together, Jimmy Carter has announced himself at odds with the Southern Baptist Church

So he's been ok with it for 60 years and now he's seen the light?

I don't think any of the above follow from the Biblical notion that the husband is the head of the household who also has a duty to love his wife and childrens for whom he is responsible.

Baptists everywhere rejoice. You will never see him this critical of Islam.

Pray for America

Not to be a smart-alec, but I’ll wager that the Southern Baptists are relieved to be done with him. Most Baptists are big supporters of Israel, and it’s become apparent that Carter is a Judas to Israel.

If you pin most leftist “Christians” down on the conflicts between their ideology and the plain statements of the Bible,
they’ll reject scripture in favor of their liberal ideology.

Several places in the Bible tell of such people. James 4:4 probably says it best:
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

If he were logical, he would repudiate the death cult for its treatment of women.

What is going to do quit every couple of years? I know he’s done this once before and threatened over other things.

Jimmy should read the Bible before inserting his left-leaning foot in his mouth.

I found the original article - he left the SBC in 2000!!!!!!!

Jimmy Carter says he can 'no longer be associated' with the SBC

He did recently (July 19 I think) write an article for The Age which is quoted by this blog.

SO . . . this is just Jimmuh who cannot live unless the Press is paying attention to him. "Look at me! Look at Me! I'll recycle old stories until you LOOK AT ME!"
