Unemployment in June remained approximately 20 percent higher in states won by President Obama in last fall's election than in states won by Republican candidate John McCain, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday.
Meanwhile national opinion polls are continuing to show Obama's approval ratings are dropping.
According to the table below, the unemployment rate in June for states voting for Obama averaged 9.34 percent, compared to 7.91 percent in states that voted for the Republican candidate, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
(Graph at site)
Nationwide, the unemployment rate went from 9.4 percent in May to 9.5 percent in June.
Five states voting for McCain in 2008 had unemployment over 10 percent: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Ten states voting for Obama in 2008 had unemployment over 10 percent: California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon and Rhode Island, plus the District of Columbia.
In June, Michigan led the nation as the first state to have unemployment over 15 percent.
Thirty percent of all states now have unemployment rates higher than 10 percent.
Conceivably, states that were suffering more economically at the end of the Bush administration would have had a greater tendency to vote Democratic in the 2008 presidential election.
Still, the risk for Obama is that states voting for him last fall might be disappointed in the economic results he so far has obtained for their states.

I don’t see how this is a problem for President Obama. The more people who are unemployed, the more people who will vote themselves more of the government’s largesse.
I guess it depends on how informed these unemployed, potential voters are. If they’re mostly not registered and they are pissed at Obama, I don’t expect ACORN will be doing much organizing in those neighborhoods.
The idiots in these high enemployment states are, well, just idiots who have no brains and will vote again for the something for nothing guy.
Failure! Another Carter.
In all of 1930, unemployment never went above 10%. The Depression should have been over by the end of 1931, if not before.
Obama is doing everything Hoover did wrong—only worse. And at least Hoover still had REAL MONEY in circulation, and a top income tax rate of 24%, and an income tax that affected hardly anyone, anyway.
We have Monopoly money, headed for hyperinflation, and unemployment headed for 35%.
The good news is that even with ACORN and the club-wielding Black Panthers to help him at the polls, Obama will have trouble getting re-elected with unemployment at 30%.
In order to be UNemployed, you had to be employed. Thus, these are people who would LIKE to be employed. Unemployment can only hurt Obama and help Sarah. It’s really rich that Obama is going to be hurt most in the places he can’t afford to lose—the places he won last time.
All the more reason for -7bama to push another stimulus package. He’ll need more wealth transfer to garner the right amount of votes.
And Obama will get more and more careless in rushing in ‘porkulus packages’.
With unemployment rising and polls falling, look for the State Run Media to dig up stories on Rush, Cheney, Rove, Palin, and their newest targets -- the Bush twins. BDS in action.
people with no jobs could care less about these side shows. They want JOBS!!!!!!!!
How man will refuse shovel ready jobs because you will get blisters?
Why get blisters when you can drink beer?
I dont see how this is a problem for President Obama. The more people who are unemployed, the more people who will vote themselves more of the governments largesse.
What he said.
Voters who vpted for Obama did not do so for America. They did so for emotional reasons, skin color, selfisness etc.
Unfortunately reality will have little effect on that...
Productive citizens did not vote for zero the first time around, you’re correct The ones who did are the scum who want something for nothing and they will keep voting for a handout.
There are productive people who hate their jobs, but keep them because of the health insurance benefit. They voted for the single-payer system zerO promised.
The ones I meet are unionized. Some have pensions, but the health insurance co-pays have gone up. They aren’t what I would call *scum*, but they voted their own self-interest.
They will bail on zerO when they don’t get the promised government-paid health insurance. However, they will not vote Republican. So, they may vote for him as default, just because they are donks. Some may vote Libertarian or Green, however.
As much as we all hate it, the GOP understands the populace. That is why they try to be donk-light, while appearing to throw a few bones to the taxpayer. It is a terrible Catch-22 for the nation.
No it doesn’t. Obama’s supporters voted for him because they are racists. And Obama and his Demwits can always count on the partisan media shills to shape the so-called news.
