The National Rifle Association said Thursday it will count the Senate vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor as part of its influential legislative score card on how members of Congress stand on gun-rights issues.
The NRA opposes her, but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, another powerful lobby not prone to siding with the White House on every issue, endorsed Judge Sotomayor Thursday.
The politically potent gun-rights group said it is concerned about Judge Sotomayor's stance on Second Amendment rights and her rulings as an appellate judge, including one upholding a New York law that barred a man from carrying a martial-arts weapon.
"From the outset, the National Rifle Association respected the confirmation process and hoped for mainstream answers to bedrock questions," NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and Executive Director Chris Cox, wrote in a letter to senators.
"Unfortunately, Judge Sotomayor's judicial record and testimony during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings clearly demonstrate a hostile view of the Second Amendment and the fundamental right of self-defense guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution."
Although not expected to derail the confirmation of President Obama's first Supreme Court pick, the decision could mean political headaches for lawmakers of both parties who often tout perfect NRA voting records in their campaigns. The NRA previously had announced its opposition to Judge Sotomayor but had not stated whether it would "score" the vote in its rankings.
The Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, a leading gun-control group, wasted no time in calling the NRA announcement a test of the gun lobby's political clout, saying a Sotomayor confirmation would dent the NRA's reputation as the "Death Star of D.C. lobbying."
Meanwhile, the White House touted the chamber endorsement. Judge Sotomayor worked as a corporate lawyer in the 1980s before becoming a federal judge...

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is a Republican in name only (RINO).
Please name the others who we need to contact.
For starters, get rid of the Maine sisters and Graham of SC.
Hm. Are "martial-arts weapons" arms or not?
Is a sling (David-style) an arm or a martial-arts weapon or just a mere weapon?
Maybe it's just me, but it seems this whole weapons-banning thing has really gone off the rails. It seems the only ones capable of defending themselves today are the scofflaws, felons on supervision and ex-cons.
Maybe Clint Williams is right.
NRA dues just went up 5.00 but it’s worth it.
That means 70.00 will be in the mail asap.
The NRA should completely drop anybody that votes for her on either side.
Thanks for the support.
There are a lot of NRA haters on this board and it’s always good to hear from the loyal NRA members.
Yeah, this board has it’s infestation of maggots - they are drawn to anything conservative so they can trash it.
Add another NRA supporter here.
When the NRA targets these Senators, My money will flow to the NRA!
And replace them with whom? At the least Graham is with us on Healthcare. We’re not going to get conservatives from Maine. The reason the left dominates currently is because they were willing to accept conservative democrats in red states.
We should accept moderate Republicans in Blue states such as Maine, Oregon, Delaware and accept only hardcore conservatives in Red states. And, once in the majority, insist on leadership coming from the ranks of conservatives. Even with the RINO’s much of the conservative agenda will pass.
Passing 60% of the conservative agenda is preferable to the 10% we might get now.
Lifetime NRA member here. One of the few organizations that actually does something with it’s dues collected, and so very much more than the fight for freedom. My lifetime status was achieved by writing a single check. Sure I can let it go at that .. I choose to write them the same check amount every year, and do it with gladness.
Your response was enough to get me to
write the check so it’s ready for the mail.
The best cause to spend 70.00 on.
Freedom is not free!
Graham’s cobbler made a special pair of loafers...lead soles to keep this light-weight from floating off to San Francisco.
And the Chamber of Commerce keeps calling me to re-instate my membership. I dumped them after they endorsed amnesty under GWB. I tell them that every time they call. Now I have another reason to tell them.
I’m an NRA member, too. However, I read somewhere that they caved on some handgun bill a few years ago, which has me a little concerned. I’m considering switching to Gun Owners of America when my NRA membership runs out.
I prefer to pronounce it "Sodomizer"
Do some research and you will find that GOA does nothing but collect dues. When is the last time you heard on the news that GOA stepped up to the plate and did any work on any legislative bills? The only real gun lobby we have in DC is NRA, whether you agree with them on everything or not.
I’d have to say Crying George Voinovich from the not so great State of Ohio should be on that list
