NRA sets sights on senators backing Sotomayor
Washington Times ^ | July 24, 2009 | Tom LoBianco

The National Rifle Association said Thursday it will count the Senate vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor as part of its influential legislative score card on how members of Congress stand on gun-rights issues.

The NRA opposes her, but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, another powerful lobby not prone to siding with the White House on every issue, endorsed Judge Sotomayor Thursday.

The politically potent gun-rights group said it is concerned about Judge Sotomayor's stance on Second Amendment rights and her rulings as an appellate judge, including one upholding a New York law that barred a man from carrying a martial-arts weapon.

"From the outset, the National Rifle Association respected the confirmation process and hoped for mainstream answers to bedrock questions," NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and Executive Director Chris Cox, wrote in a letter to senators.

"Unfortunately, Judge Sotomayor's judicial record and testimony during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings clearly demonstrate a hostile view of the Second Amendment and the fundamental right of self-defense guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution."

Although not expected to derail the confirmation of President Obama's first Supreme Court pick, the decision could mean political headaches for lawmakers of both parties who often tout perfect NRA voting records in their campaigns. The NRA previously had announced its opposition to Judge Sotomayor but had not stated whether it would "score" the vote in its rankings.

The Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, a leading gun-control group, wasted no time in calling the NRA announcement a test of the gun lobby's political clout, saying a Sotomayor confirmation would dent the NRA's reputation as the "Death Star of D.C. lobbying."

Meanwhile, the White House touted the chamber endorsement. Judge Sotomayor worked as a corporate lawyer in the 1980s before becoming a federal judge...

Well, I found some GOA victories here.

You are reading GOA press releases.

How many lawyers have they employed ?

How many law suits have they won ?

"There are a lot of NRA haters on this board and it’s always good to hear from the loyal NRA members."

I became a Life Member this year, and I like the organization. I had been disappointed with them in the past because I had wished they were more aggressive, but there is no denying that they are the largest and best organization protecting our gun rights. I have been happy with their increased activities since the Heller ruling and the rise of obamunism.

Oh ... and to those that say they will quit the NRA and join the GOA ... I recommend joining BOTH ... and join your state gun rights group too. NRA is the biggest... but no one is limited to joining only one.

The NRA, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, should give nobody who votes for this anti-Bill of Rights raxist a grade higher than a D+ even if every other vote they cast is for constitutional rights.

Why would anyone on this board hate the NRA?

The Wash. Times got it wrong according to James Maloney. One of his websites that I just read won't permit copying. Nassau County, NY seized the sticks from his home while he was absent. Here's the link:

It's paragraph 6 about a quarter of the way down.

“Sotomayor is involved in a bankruptcy fraud scheme and she lied through omission on the questionnaire to the Senate Judiciary Committee to cover it up.”

I’d have to say Crying George Voinovich from the not so great State of Ohio should be on that list

He's retiring. Thank God!

I was so disgusted with the NRA last election. I thought we had Murtha on the ropes and a dandy candidate to challenge him. Then the NRA jumped in the few days before the election to run advertising for Murtha. I swore I'd never give them another nickle.

But maybe I'll reconsider if they pull this off.

Vote no: 100 Rating

Vote yes: 0 rating

Anything less would be a compromise.

The NRA should not list ANY demoRAT politicians as pro-gun or pro-2nd amendment. I believe it was on FR sometime today, that indicated in the Conceal & Carry Reciprocity bill (Thune/Vitter amendment) that Sen Pryor from Arkansas and other Dims were getting the thumbs up from Dirty Dick Durbin, that they could change their nay votes to aye, once the demoRATs were sure the amendment would fall short of 60 votes needed. I am going to call the NRA on Monday and aggressively confront them again on this. Every demoRAT in the Senate & House will deceive & obfuscate their votes on gun rights & 2nd amendment so that it appears they support these issues when in fact they are conspiring with the radical left-wing dimWit socialists to destroy our gun rights and disregard the 2nd Amendment.

DemoRATs are the epitome of evil immoral wretched bastards!!!

The NRA may not be able to stop her, but at least we can fight a scorched-earth battle, exacting the maximum price from all the RINO turncoats.
