Crowd of 1,000+ turns out for Palin's Wasilla picnic
Texas for Sarah Palin ^ | Saturday, July 25, 2009 | Josh Painter

Posted on 07/25/2009 5:19:13 AM PDT by Josh Painter

Dwarfing the numbers that traditionally show up for the governor's annual picnic in Wasilla, Alaska, more than a thousand people turned out Friday for Gov. Sarah Palin's last such event that she will host as governor in her hometown.

Some in the crowd came from as far away from Wasilla as Louisiana and Texas. Adrienne Ross, media director, New York State organizer and an executive board member of the 2012 Draft Sarah Committee was there, and she posted an after action report with lots of photos on her blog Motivation Truth here.

Alaskan Tammy Swofford was also there, and she blogged it (also with photos) here. another Alaskan, June, who blogs at Sunhusky's Alaska, blogged with photos here. Another Alaskan transplant, Ben Wargo, blogged it here.

As for the legacy media, KTUU's story and video is here. KTVA's story is here. The AP story is here. Raw AP video of the governor signing autographs, serving hot dogs and mingling with the crowd is here. A video of her speech to the crowed is here.

After the picnic, the governor tweeted:

"Great 3rd(& final) Governor's Picnic in hometown tonite;loved the focus: honoring military&Blue Star families;no politickin' just patriotism"
Looking ahead to the Saturday and Sunday picnics, Gov. Palin sent this message:
"Tomrrw host Anch Gov's Picnic; LtGov Parnell/I love these events- literally getting to serve you! Then Sunday Frbnks Picnic/Transition speech"

I wasn’t agreeing or disagreeing with your take on womens involvement. Based on your post you seem to think there is disapproval from God for such.

I was simily commenting on the timing of your disobediance.

"She's done her time in kitchen. Five kids prove that."

You must have a very interesting kitchen.

But I thought everyone hated her. I bet they all shouted really pointed insults at her. What? They didn’t. Impossible. The media has said she is hated so it must be true.

Coming from a rural area, I’ve had similar experiences to what you describe. I think there are probably clusters in rural areas, that have little to do with Church doctrine, and more to do with “how it was always done before”. I’m not sure of the religious affiliation of the few men who have told me they didn’t think a “woman could handle the job” and “she should be running, she needs to be with her family”, but I know they consider themselves “deeply” religious. I usually make them angry anyway, because I will defend Sarah tooth and nail (and I’m sure, my being a woman grates them more.)

I don’t, however, think it’s a big group of people. Most people I know, even ministers of various faiths, like her, and support her. Ironically, the “deeply religious” ones who hate her are Huckabee supporters, so maybe there is a correlation, or maybe they relate to his experience as a former minister. Like I said, though, I live in a rural area with more churches than people, so take it for what it’s worth. :)

....but wasn't Huck a former So. Baptist preacher? As I understand it, most Baptist churches have an issue with women in leadership (ministerial) positions. Could that be where some of his ire comes from?

Huckabee is a modern day Elmer Gantry. Sarah is authentic and Huckabee knows it. His phoniness can't compete with her authenticity. And he knows it.

Check out this totally pedestrian, just-the-facts-Ma'am (as I see them) story from Politico on the governor's picnic. The author used every opportunity to explain away the large crowd.

"I am way off base? "

Speaking from the vantage point of many years inside Baptist churches -- Yes, you are 'way off base!!!

I’m SBC and the reason that there aren’t women preachers in SBC is that there are scriptures against it (I could look them up, but I’m lazy). However, there are no scriptures against women holding public office.

As for the pants issue, it really depends on where you are. I wouldn’t dare wear pants to church in the south! I don’t know if things have changed, but when I was growing up in AR you either wore a suit and tie or a nice Sunday dress to church. Here in the North West you can pretty much wear anything (within reason) to church and no one really cares. I usually wear nice jeans and a sweater in the winter.

Huckabee should be ashamed of himself allowing that Biden speech writer to say such disgusting things about a human being, a fellow Conservative. Huckabee just sat there and said NOTHING, all he went off was the Washington Post poll, which of course he loves since it shows him in a favorable light. Anyone who might have been a Huckabee supporter last night and saw him sit there and not defend Sarah showed them what kind of man Mike Huckabee is. I twittered him and told him that he should be ashamed of himself and to APOLOGIZE, yeah I doubt it, he’ll apologize when Obama apologizes to the Cambridge police officer.
Oh yeah, a far as Sarah’s sweatshirt goes, someone I know who was at the picnic said the sweatshirt was to show solidarity to the Cambridge police department, Patriots, in Boston, Cambridge, well, you all get my point :-)

What I see Sarah doing is filling a vacuum of leadership and character created by compromising RINOS such Huckabee and Romney and McCain and the rest. What really shines her star is her credibility. She doesn't have to proclaim that she is one of us, we know it instinctively! And we laugh when these other RINO clowns choke on their own proclamations of commonality. They are pitifully transparent. We are so over them.

Exactly.

That video is pretty disgusting and quite the setup. I had hoped that Huc was just going along with the flow because of weak character, wanting to be liked more than wanting to stand on character. But it seems the look of delight as he set up the piece shows that he liked the slander fest and was looking forward to it.

I am quite disappointed with Huc, a nice guy he is not it seems when it came to his rival. You know one of the things that makes me like Sarah so much? The others are not her rivals to her, her focus is on what is best for America, not what is best for her. Her ego is not the most important thing in the world to her. She will toss a title to get a job done.

I can respect that, and I cannot vote for those I do not respect with a clear conscience

I hope there is no problem with this, but there is a great, and sarcastic, comment on the KTVA site:

"I expect that a number of complaints against Sarah Palin will be filed by the usual suspects after this picnic:

1. The hot dogs were scorched

2. State funds were used to buy the mayo

3. The ketchup stain on Ms. Palin's blouse was unbecoming

4. Her daughter ate too many chips

5. The labels on the mustard jars should have been removed; free advertising for a private firm at a public event is an ethical violation

6. If stimulus money had been accepted by the governor more and better food would have been available

7. Ms. Palin should not have been present at her farewell picnic; this event can be construed as a form of political advertising in violation of the Feingold- McCain law, as she took advantage of media exposure without having to pay for it

8. Not inviting Obama and Ellen Degeneres to the picnic may be a hate crime.

And I'm sure there have been ethical violations committed at that picnic that I have not thought of. But someone else will... "

I just watched the video and it was great, Huckabee and Carpenter were both polite and very effective in their counter to the wonderful excess that was coming out of the dems mouth. Huckabee worked in a huge number of Palin positives without appearing to be forcing it.

Governor Palin can use all these type discussions she can get as long as she gets the support that she got from Huckabee and Carpenter, this is definitely the kind of thing that makes her look good to middle America and independents.

I think you’re dead-on about that.

I’m smack dab in the middle of hillbilly heaven...not that there’s anything wrong with that! (I love it here.)
We still have ol’ guys who come to church in their “Sunday bibs”-nicely pressed and creased overalls that look almost new! I think it’s sweet.
