States offer a hodgepodge of concealed-handgun rules that prevent citizens from protecting themselves when traveling from one state to another. Sen. John Thune, South Dakota Republican, introduced an amendment to the defense authorization bill that would have fixed this problem by granting reciprocity for gun permits across state lines. In a 58-39 vote on Wednesday, supporters fell two short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. This was a victory of fear over facts.
Thirty-seven of the 39 no votes were cast by Democrats. The two Republicans who crossed party lines to vote nay were Sen. Richard G. Lugar of Indiana and Sen. George V. Voinovich of Ohio. Gun-control advocates were predicting the worst if the vote succeeded. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, New Jersey Democrat, warned of a "radical agenda [that would put guns] ahead of safety and security in our communities." Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said, "It could reverse the dramatic success we've had in reducing crime in most all parts of America."
The claims echo those made when concealed-handgun laws were being debated and introduced across the country over the past few decades. Gun controllers warned that permit holders would lose their tempers and there would be blood in the streets. That never happened. . . . .

And yet again legislation, in this case doesn't pass, because of a few GOP crossing party lines.
Apparently several changed their vote to “yes” when they knew it would not pass.
This is the most important civil rights legislation since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Once again ant-Bill of Rights Democrats are blocking it.
Sorry. I tried to read the original article but just pulled up a page that never loaded fully. Hopefully another link will work better...
What makes this guy think firearms and safety & security are mutually exclusive. You want to keep a bank safe, post armed guards. You want to keep an airliner safe, put an armed federal marshal on board. You want to keep a military base safe, armed soldiers patrol the perimeter. What is the common denominator when a place has to be secured? Bring in responsible people with firearms. Well effin' duh! Why are our representatives making it so hard to secure the places we go in our lives? They must want us to feel fearful, unsafe. They must want excuses to take away our liberties.
Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said, "It could reverse the dramatic success we've had in reducing crime in most all parts of America."
Does that "dramatic success" include all the killings in supposedly "gun free" zones? Otherwise known as "target rich environments" for criminals and mentally disturbed people who walk right through laws and slaughter law-abiding citizens disarmed by their elected officials.

>”There will be blood in the streets” is a refuted lie that they continue to roll out at every chance.
The more politicians are not held to account, or blatantly excused, (like Murtha and his slander, or Geithner and his Turbo-Tax) I find myself wondering if that’s a _BAD_ thing. [/cynic]
IMO...Stopping someone from exercising their right to self defense simply because they travel across State lines is a gross infringement of an individual's 2nd Amend. rights.
Instead of attempting to pass new laws infringing on the right to bear arms. Why not start removing the hodgepodge of concealed-handgun rules that infringe on the right to bear arms.
Yeah pubs vote in Sotomayor because it is politically correct.
"Only GAY MARRIAGE doesn't stop at state lines. The Second Amendment only applies to 'a well-regulated militia'. Oh yeah, and Die Infidels!"
We need to move towards Alaska and Vermont, and repeal any licensing requirement at all for carry of firearms.
Yeah...Cry baby is from Ohio, but he NEVER represented me...I’m glad to see him go after this term! He should resign. George became a republican so he could go to DC, but he has always been a demoncrat.
The bill only required that states that allow concealed carry respect the acts of other states. Two states do not require a permit for concealed carry, and their citizens would have been able to carry in any state that allows concealed carry under this bill.
