Healthcare reform sets off euthanasia alarm

health economist warns that President Obama's government-run healthcare plan may result in denying care to a significant number of Americans, especially senior citizens.

Conservative opponents of President Obama's healthcare plan have been arguing that a government takeover of healthcare will allow Washington bureaucrats to use "comparative effectiveness research" to dictate to doctors which treatments they should prescribe and how much those treatments should cost. Critics say this will lead to rationing of care.

In the medical journal The Lancet (January 2009 [PDF]) Obama's special health policy advisor Ezekiel Emanuel wrote that if healthcare has to be rationed, he prefers the "complete lives system," which "discriminates against older people."

Dr. Devon Herrick, a senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis, says Emanuel believes young adults should be given preferential care over seniors because they have more years of their life ahead of them.

"I guess the implication of that is if you're older, you will be assumed to have lived a complete life; whereas if you're younger, you'd have yet to live a complete life," Herrick suggests. "So in a way I kind of see it as a method to ration care to the elderly, but trying to use an ethicist's view to justify it."

In an article written more than a decade ago [PDF] for the Hastings Center Report, Dr. Emanuel suggested that health services should not be guaranteed to "individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens." He said "an obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia."

This SOB in Chief thinks that it is OK to let a newborn baby die, with out ANY medical care, in a botched abortion case.

You bet your very soul that he will deny treatment to anyone he feels is not worthy of his blessings!

Yes! They want you to work your whole life and pay their damn taxes...and then when its time for you to retire, they want you to die so they can keep more money instead of giving it to you in your social security!

Does this apply to people with incurable diseases, like AIDS?
Is the gay community aware of what is in the House bill?

I’m not sure. Perhaps it will be exempt from exclusion. See some of my “representative’s” work on the bill:

Baldwin Provisions in Health Reform Bill Address LGBT Health Disparities

Press Release, July 17, 2009

As the House Energy and Commerce Committee began this week to mark-up America’s Affordable Health Choices Act (H.R. 3200), Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin was successful in her efforts to add language addressing LGBT health disparities. This includes:

Helping people with AIDS gain access to drugs under Medicare Part D;

Ensuring data collection on the health of LGBT populations; and

Strong non-discrimination provisions to guarantee access to health care for all communities.

“Meaningful health care reform has the potential to transform this country. As Congress considers legislation to make quality health care affordable and accessible, we must ensure that all Americans are included equally in our efforts,” Baldwin said.

While applauding the addition of three of her objectives in the draft health care reform bill, Baldwin explained, “Keep in mind that the bill introduced this week is just a starting point, and much work remains to be done. I am continuing my efforts to see that LGBT Americans are included in health reform and am hopeful that we’ll see more progress as deliberations continue. My quest for an end to LGBT health disparities will continue long after we pass a health care reform bill.”

Baldwin’s effort to end LGBT health disparities have earned the support of the Human Rights Campaign; National Coalition for LGBT Health; The AIDS Institute; Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) National; National Center for Transgender Equality; AIDS Action; American Psychological Association; Mautner Project: The National Lesbian Health Organization; and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

Where are the Republicans. This is red meat. The Prez and the Dems WANT TO FREAKING K-I-L-L THE ELDERLY.

Where did the “LIFE LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS” go?

How many times did the Dems tell senior citizens that the Republicans wanted to “kill them” by cutting benefits? It was a lie but they convinced the seniors. Now Bo REALLY does want to kill them in the “healthcare reform” bill

Where are the tv ads (not the internet ads, the TV ADS) showing an old couple going in for their “end of life” counselling? Who is next, diabetics? Their lifestyle is “expensive”, the disabled?

Mr President, you took an oath to uphold our Constitution and PROTECT the citizens of the United States. THere is no AGE LIMIT on those protections. He wants to kill AMERICAN
CITIZENS for budgetary reasons... we do not do that in America, Mr. President.

Where are the Republicans? This is a golden opportunity. Instead of telling us how “Edgey” Sonya is because she’s Hispanic, we could grab every senior citizen in the US with one ad. It would be the “daisy and the bomb” ad.

If anyone is interested Ezekiel Emmanuel's "Complete Lives" policy is ALREADY slipping into place. Remember the story last year about the 60 year old guy in Oregon (IIRC) who had prostate cancer and the state told him therapy was too expensive but he did qualify for euthanasia? Remember that story? So the tings folks are concerned about are already happening!
