Michigan lawmakers want Gitmo detainees Published: July 24, 2009 at 12:46 PM
WASHINGTON, July 24 (UPI) -- Some Democratic lawmakers from Michigan are viewing the Guantanamo detainees as a possible means of boosting their state's finances, legislators say.
Several Democrat members in the U.S. House and Senate are floating the idea of housing detainees from the U.S. detention facility in Cuba in Michigan prisons set to close because of the state's budget crunch, The Hill reported Friday.
The move would save or create jobs in a state with the nation's highest unemployment rate of 15.4 percent.
Democratic Sen. Carl Levin and Reps. Bart Stupak and Dale Kildee say Michigan prisons could house the Gitmo detainees as long as nearby residents and state and local officials agreed to the move.
The Hill says the idea is opposed by most of the state's Republicans who cite safety concerns.
Rep. Pete Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Select Intelligence Committee and a candidate for governor, says Michigan prisons can't provide the same protection as Gitmo, The Hill said
Isn’t the countries largets islamic population in dearborn....Ya thats a good Idea..lets put them there! /s
Seems like it’d be cruel and unusual punishment, need I say “terror” and torture, to even consider moving these inncent men from the warm Caribbean to the frozen Siberian tundra of upper Michigan.
Heard a pundit joking the other day that things are so bad in Michigan that they can’t keep the jails full because even the criminals are moving out of state.
It’s funny but true.
Let MI pay all the “Human Rights” Violation Fines. The libs will insist that all constitutional guarantees will be bestowed on these guys. We are talking about hundreds of millions if not a billion dollars per detainee. ACLU and ACORN for ever
yep, just add some more of the islamic muslims.. we’ll have a third world country in Detroit.... because all of the non-muslims will move out, or have turf war.
LOL . . . like a few bodies will make much of a splash in that state.
Or Michigan needs more criminals. ROFL
Yes, we can watch the entire town break into the prison to break them out.
Any prison with these terrorists in it will become a focal point for everyone from the ACLU to Al Qeada. The surrounding towns will face the brunt.
As a Michgander I say we need the money but we need to earn honestly it because taxpayer paid salaries are a net loss.
I guess they can turn all those unemployed UAW workers into employed union guards. Gettlefinger can become the new Terrorist Czar.
Muslim mob in Michigan surrounds and attacks Christians
Aggressive, Militant Islam On Display in Dearborn Michigan. Are you ready for Sharia in America?
The MI leaders are fools. If they ever escape or are set free by the courts, the ex-detainees will disappear in the Dearborn population and they’ll never be found.
Sure! Why not? They can house TENS of THOUSANDS of them in the vacant auto plants. Not to mention all the other empty factory sites in this state.
The idea was originally proposed by former governor (R) John Engler. The papers — most of them — thought he was nuts.
If we have to take them, let’s stick them on Isle Royale. It’s at least 50 miles by boat, surrounded by Lake Superior, and is stocked with moose, fish and birds.
Nevermind the “gales of November come early” and all those wolves...
Why not, we have huge group in DC working at the Capital Building, that aren’t declared. WELCOME TO FINANCIAL JHAD.
Bermuda got millions to take some of Uighers, and not in jail. In fact they have a house on ocean and money to spend to open a restaurant...some of Bermudans are upset. They showed pool and ocean and home they were living in.
The democrats have so ruined the economy in the state of Michigan that they are thinking about importing terrorists into the state because it might bring them more government money/welfare.
Seriously, why are people not up in arms over this.
Oh, you've missed the other half of the GENIUS...
Viewpoints differ on Democrat's 10-dollar minimum wage proposal

Anthony Johnson gets $8 an hour to wash dishes part-time at a restaurant, earning a paycheck that has to stretch far to make ends meet.
"It helps out, but it don't totally pay the bills," said Johnson, 38, of Saginaw.
So Johnson says he'd support a $10-an-hour minimum wage proposal floated by the Michigan Democratic Party. The present minimum wage in Michigan is $7.40 an hour.
The wage increase might make it to the 2010 state election ballot. It's one of several initiatives Democrats are considering that would require petition drives to put to a vote.
"People of Michigan should be asking their government and their elected officials: 'Whose side are you on?'" said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer.
Saginaw resident Joe Cox, 49, who recently lost his job in the insurance industry, feels the wage plan would have mixed results.
"You need to make more money, but when you do, they lay someone (else) off," said Cox, who's looking for a paycheck that will cover his mortgage.
Brandon Barrett, 23, of Midland also is seeking a job after losing his $9.72-an-hour position with a contractor for Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. in Thomas Township.
He supports the Democrats' $10-an-hour plan but feels it will have the unintended consequence of increasing the price of goods and services.
Michigan Chamber of Commerce President Rich Studley spoke to business groups in Frankenmuth on Thursday who expressed concern.
"Many of those companies are an important part of our travel and tourism industry," Studley said. "When they learned this morning of this ballot proposal, they were dismayed and just shook their heads."
Studley said a higher minimum wage would make it harder for small businesses to hire entry-level workers and could force the layoff of existing employees.
Yet at least one business operating in Saginaw County already is on board with the Democrat's plan.
Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby, a private company that has a store at 2480 Tittabawassee, set a $10-an-hour wage for full-time employees in April.
Along with the minimum-wage idea, other Democratic Party proposals announced this week include mandating health care for all employees or requiring the employer to pay a penalty; increasing unemployment benefits by $100 a week and extending benefits by six months; cutting utility rates by 20 percent, and imposing a one-year moratorium on home foreclosures.
Democrats plan to poll their party activists and decide later whether or not to launch petition drives to get any of the proposals on the ballot.
