Skip to comments.Time for a change -- to the Constitution (to allow Obama to be Prez)
Posted on 07/27/2009 9:20:26 AM PDT by pissant
The drumbeat of discontent from the so-called "birthers" has started again. Nearly six months after President Barack Obama was inaugurated, fringe members of the conservative party are finding public platforms to argue that Obama has no right to the presidency because he does not have a valid U.S. birth certificate.
Never mind the bigoted undertones of these claims, the unspoken assertion that because Obama does not look like "us," he is not American.
Such rumors take on an even more sinister hue when birthers rant that Obama is trying to cheat "us" -- that he really was born in Kenya, and that his mother doctored the birth certificate or, more egregiously, secreted Obama to Hawaii from Kenya only days after his birth, then secured a U.S. birth certificate for her foreign-born son.
Although these claims are, at best, ludicrous, they should also compel us to consider why the Constitution bans foreign-born U.S. citizens from presidential office -- and to amend the Constitution so that questions about birth certificates and origins of birth no longer matter. In doing so, U.S. citizens, like my two sons, might be eligible for the country's highest office.

For $10, you can avoid the whole thing and show us that Obama is absolutely qualified to be POTUS. Gee, wonder why you don't advocate that?
Obama shouldn’t have to do things like answer to us or look us in the eye.
The people who think he should are just racists.
Wanting to see a birth certificate to prove qualifications is bigoted? Who knew?
I can tell by her undertone that she is an intolerant bigot.
It’s his ideology we dislike Melanie.
If Walter Williams was on the ticket I would vote for him.
Nice strawman, Melanie. I'd be raising the same Hell if Granholm or Schwarzenegger tried to become President.
Although these claims are, at best, ludicrous, they should also compel us to consider why the Constitution bans foreign-born U.S. citizens from presidential office
If these claims are "ludicrous," then why the need to amend the Constitution? Is Obama a natural-born citizen or not?
Tells you a lot about this woman that she has no understanding as to why.
But such arguments, for those raised their entire lives in the United States and for those who claim long-standing U.S. citizenship, have no factual basis.
You are seeing the factual basis in Obama, lady!
How do morons like this author manage to breath?
Seriously, how does she manage to do it?
I think she realizes that despite how hard it would be to pass a Constitutional amendment, it’ll be even harder to prove that Obama was born in the US.
(Never mind the bigoted undertones of these claims, the unspoken assertion that because Obama does not look like “us,” he is not American.)
It didn’t take much time to turn the specific request of a birth certificate into an opportunity for race baiting. I’m just shocked that the writer is a professor of some sort!
Oregon: A state full of clueless liberal lemmings.
Hey Melanie, there is nothing bigoted about wanting to see the POTUS birth certificate. The only thing I see bigoted is your obvious trash talk.
Is this Jerry Springer’s daughter?
Another wacked-out LIB who understands nothing and cares less about America or its ideals.
Not only that, but I don’t believe that such a constitutional amendment would apply to Obama, since it would be ex-post-facto.
Perhaps a Constitutional lawyer could correct me, but I have heard it said about repealing the two-term limitation—that the repeal would not apply to someone who was already in office.
Of course, Obama is a constitutional lawyer himself, whose specialty appears to be bending and breaking the Constitution and the rule of law. So perhaps it doesn’t matter.
On a positive note, there has been an enormous epidemic of leftist responses to the birther issue. Evidently they are very worried and have received instructions from Obama to go all out on these attacks.
Much better than the previous instructions; silence and coverup.
I am sure if her children get in trouble with the law she will want to change the law too...
It is this convenient thinking based on personal bias that ish elp to destroy our Republic.
When the left proposes changes to the constitution that would allow a not “natural born” citizen to become president you know that they know there is a problem.
Reminds me of Apollo 13, “Houston we got a problem.”
It’s no longer a race “card”, it’s a race “shield” -
used to deflect any and all criticism or legality questions.
Case in point - Get caught breaking into a house and get asked for ID? Race shields - UP!

2. Combs her hair with a fork
Why bother to change, if 0bama is telling the truth???
In the mind of a leftist,
your (ie, the founders’) reasons would be completely invalid.
Since they are in the past,
obviously they don’t have as much knowledge
as those living now,
so their reasoning cannot be given any weight
in comparison to even this author,
who has more information than the founders
due to the fact she’s living NOW,
and they were living THEN.
Remember, this is just an analysis of how leftists
like the author think, and not my position.
Melanie Mock, eh?
Blessed are those

or sit in the company of mockers
I think her point is that many, many Americans are not natural born citizens. And they want to be President someday. So, they see it as an unfair part of the 'law'.
That is why they do not worry, or object to the possibility Obama is not a 'natural born citizen'.
Ironically, a lot of the arugments in favor of her adopted children being eligible to be POTUS do not apply to Obama. Her boys are growing up with a very, typical American experience. Obama did not.
His father, who he is named after, was a Kenyan, socialist (at best) who came here on a student visa and returned home shortly after Obama was born. After this, Obama was adopted by another foreign national, and spent his formative years in a largely anti-American, Islamic nation. He was somehow able to travel to Pakistan in 1982, when it was illegal for Americans to do so.
I remember, during the campaign, Chris Matthews (with a thrill going up his leg, no doubt) glowingly spoke of him as being “a gift to us from the world”. I don’t know about “gift”, but Matthews was right in that Barack Hussein Obama (even if we assume he was indeed born in Hawaii) is in many ways a foreigner, who has come from “the world” as opposed to from an American experience.
While the framers were probably not thinking of those adopted at 3 months old, and raised in America, by American citizen parents, they probably were thinking of individuals like Obama when the wrote the natural born citizen requirment into the Constitution.
That is not to say, Obama should be inelgible if he was born in Hawaii. However, I do wish the American people would have demonstrated some of the wisdom of the founders, and not elected a candidate with so many foreign ties.
Melanie’s non-academic interests include her two sons, Samuel and Benjamin, running and watching good shows on television.
And as a liberal `egg-head’ she enjoys sharing her feckless, lefty political positions with the world while phrasing them, as do most “progressive” academics, as categorical statements.
Which party is that?
the unspoken assertion that because Obama does not look like "us," he is not American.
It's unspoken because no one has asserted it. And no one has asserted it because it's ridiculous. His looks have absolutely nothing to do with it. But libs can't pass up an opportunity to play the race card. Against BHO's health care plan? Racist. Against tax hikes? Racist. Support upholding the Constitution? Racist. ...etc.
the infamous Joe the Plumber has an easier chance of ascending to the country's highest office than [my Vietnam-born sons] do.
lol...infamous? In Melanie's eyes, conservatives are all rotten, and the well-known ones are "infamous."
my 7-year-old foreign-born sons know more about U.S. history and politics than most of their peers, given what they hear at home from their politically obsessed parents
Poor kids -- brainwashed daily by fanatical, mean-spirited, socialistic parents. One can only imagine the historical revisionism regurgitated in that household.

What’s ludicrous is that no one from the President’s family, or nayone who knows him can tell the same story as anyone else.
According to friends and family;
He was born in 2 different hospitals in Hawaii and another one in Kenya.
His parents were single, married, or not seeing each other when he was born.
His birth announcement lists an address that no one in his family ever lived in.
Now that’s ludicrous.
It should. There are exceptions for people in office at the time of adoption, but otherwise the plain language should allow a second-term president to run again if it were no longer in effect. This of course depends on the language of the rescinding amendment. While it would be hard to push such an amendment through, it would be nearly impossible if it let the current president stay in office because cries of "dictator for life" and "power grab" would be legitimately all over the place.
Likewise. if Obama were forced out and this idiot's amendment passed, Obama would be free to run again at the next election unless the rescinding amendment stated otherwise.
I have to say I’ve never seen the state election entry form. In which case couldn’t any registered voter of the state of AZ sue to see the BC? In that the AZ Secretary of State is acting on behalf of the voters?
And then there’s the question of his mother being legally able to confer citizenship?
I fart in her general direction.
Not even. All Bambi has to do is to waive his privacy rights in regard to birth information that the State of Hawaii and its hospitals have in their files. We'll pay for the certified copies.
I seriously doubt that even 10 states could pass through with 66% of the vote this amendment.
I’ll by the pizza and the beer for the press conference.
If he had a certificate of live birth rather than a stripped-down version called a certification of live birth, we’d know which hospital he was born in ...
It looks like he doesn’t want to release a Kenyan birth certificate for some reason.
5. “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counteract ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.”
In Obama's case this failed. He has obvious divided loyalties, which can be traced back to early childhood, and he has not outgrown them. It's unfortunate that this did not prevent him from becoming President.
This is entirely a construct of liberal racists. If liberals think that Obama doesn't look like an American, that is their problem, and one that is not at all relevant to the questions surrounding Obama's actual birthplace.
I can think of several individuals who look like him that I’d be proud to vote for, WW included. And they earned their right to be President the hard way, not handed to them on a silver platter.
That depends on how the amendment is written. When the two-term restriction was added, the amendment specifically excluded anyone who was already President at the time of ratification. This probably made it easier to get it ratified.
If the repeal did not include similar language, it would be seen by many as a power grab by the current President, and it would be much more difficult to get 3/4s of the states to ratify it.
God, she's an idiot.
What about the unspoken assertion that Obama is made of anti-matter?
What about the unspoken assertion that Obama has given birth to a giraffe?
Hint to Melanie: if no-one's saying something, it's automatically an 'unspoken assertion'. The fact that you are relying on things that no-one has said means that you are an unhinged fantasist.
...but it wasn't bigoted to make the same demands (COMPLIED WITH) of McCain?
