Time for a change -- to the Constitution (to allow Obama to be Prez)
Oregon Live ^ | 7/27/09 | Melanie Mock

Posted on 07/27/2009 9:20:26 AM PDT by pissant

The drumbeat of discontent from the so-called "birthers" has started again. Nearly six months after President Barack Obama was inaugurated, fringe members of the conservative party are finding public platforms to argue that Obama has no right to the presidency because he does not have a valid U.S. birth certificate.

Never mind the bigoted undertones of these claims, the unspoken assertion that because Obama does not look like "us," he is not American.

Such rumors take on an even more sinister hue when birthers rant that Obama is trying to cheat "us" -- that he really was born in Kenya, and that his mother doctored the birth certificate or, more egregiously, secreted Obama to Hawaii from Kenya only days after his birth, then secured a U.S. birth certificate for her foreign-born son.

Although these claims are, at best, ludicrous, they should also compel us to consider why the Constitution bans foreign-born U.S. citizens from presidential office -- and to amend the Constitution so that questions about birth certificates and origins of birth no longer matter. In doing so, U.S. citizens, like my two sons, might be eligible for the country's highest office.

Hey Melanie. That's a mighty big task to get congress to pass and 3/4 of the states to ratify.

For $10, you can avoid the whole thing and show us that Obama is absolutely qualified to be POTUS. Gee, wonder why you don't advocate that?

Yeah.

Obama shouldn’t have to do things like answer to us or look us in the eye.

The people who think he should are just racists.

Never mind the bigoted undertones of these claims

Wanting to see a birth certificate to prove qualifications is bigoted? Who knew?

It’s his ideology we dislike Melanie.
If Walter Williams was on the ticket I would vote for him.

Nice strawman, Melanie. I'd be raising the same Hell if Granholm or Schwarzenegger tried to become President.

Although these claims are, at best, ludicrous, they should also compel us to consider why the Constitution bans foreign-born U.S. citizens from presidential office

If these claims are "ludicrous," then why the need to amend the Constitution? Is Obama a natural-born citizen or not?

Tells you a lot about this woman that she has no understanding as to why.

Instead, the birthers generally believe that people born overseas do not fully understand the United States. Some suggest that only those born here should lead here because all others are susceptible to having foreign loyalties.

But such arguments, for those raised their entire lives in the United States and for those who claim long-standing U.S. citizenship, have no factual basis.

You are seeing the factual basis in Obama, lady!

I think she realizes that despite how hard it would be to pass a Constitutional amendment, it’ll be even harder to prove that Obama was born in the US.

(Never mind the bigoted undertones of these claims, the unspoken assertion that because Obama does not look like “us,” he is not American.)
It didn’t take much time to turn the specific request of a birth certificate into an opportunity for race baiting. I’m just shocked that the writer is a professor of some sort!

Hey Melanie, there is nothing bigoted about wanting to see the POTUS birth certificate. The only thing I see bigoted is your obvious trash talk.

Not only that, but I don’t believe that such a constitutional amendment would apply to Obama, since it would be ex-post-facto.

Perhaps a Constitutional lawyer could correct me, but I have heard it said about repealing the two-term limitation—that the repeal would not apply to someone who was already in office.

Of course, Obama is a constitutional lawyer himself, whose specialty appears to be bending and breaking the Constitution and the rule of law. So perhaps it doesn’t matter.

On a positive note, there has been an enormous epidemic of leftist responses to the birther issue. Evidently they are very worried and have received instructions from Obama to go all out on these attacks.

Much better than the previous instructions; silence and coverup.

Very wise Men created our Constitution with the Natural-born clause for a very good reason. Despite all the multi-cultural koombaya post-racial blather, Blood and Soil still really matters!

Walter Williams, Alan Keyes, J. C. Watts and Michael Steele are all individuals that I would support. I'm in favor of an intelligent conservative. Melanin content isn't part of the evaluation.

When the left proposes changes to the constitution that would allow a not “natural born” citizen to become president you know that they know there is a problem.

Reminds me of Apollo 13, “Houston we got a problem.”

It’s no longer a race “card”, it’s a race “shield” -

used to deflect any and all criticism or legality questions.

Case in point - Get caught breaking into a house and get asked for ID? Race shields - UP!
