Prosecutor: Dad Threw Girl Off Cliff to Avoid Child Support

LOS ANGELES — A father who had no interest in his 4-year-old daughter did the unimaginable — hurling her off a 120-foot cliff to avoid paying child support, a prosecutor said Monday during the man's murder retrial.

Cameron Brown, 47, has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder in the death of Lauren Sarene Key in November 2000. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole.

Deputy District Attorney Craig Hum said during his opening statement that Brown killed Lauren because he didn't want to pay about $1,000 a month in child support.

Defense attorney Pat Harris countered that it was an accident when the girl fell from Inspiration Point in Rancho Palos Verdes.

>>This too will pass. But it will hurt like a you know what.<<

I only know what I read in the article. If I had followed the original case, I might feel a touch differently.

However, if he is guilty, his activity would not be odd for an intelligent atheist. It would be highly pragmatic.

It would also be repugnant to any religious or agnostic person.

Wow, life without parole. WHAT ABOUT THE DEATH PENALTY?

Aside from the cost to society: if you were to choose life w/o parole or death for yourself, what would you choose? I personally might prefer execution because it would be too depressing to live without hope, and death comes in the end anyway.

So all you really need is an allegation right? Say three hulking college athletes gang raped a stripper in a tiny bathroom?

Is that now the standard?
No evidence needed?
A tenuous motive?

A little girl is dead. That is tragic.
Convicting her father of murder - whether he is guilty or not won’t bring her back.

Convicting her killer on the basis of evidence is justice.
Convicting her father with hearsay is a lynch mob.
I’m not that into the lynch mob thing, thank you very much.

Based on the photo, she is the epitome of sweetness and light. How sad that such horror was visited upon her.

Innocent until proven guilty? You mean mob justice isn’t what our country was founded on???

Poor little girl, so many people would love to have her as a daughter.

What... he couldn’t just throw himself off?? Then he would not have to worry about paying anything.

I think that trip to the cliff would be an eye-opener. Depending on what I’ve heard about it being true, no parent would take a 4 yr old there because of how unsafe it is. Possibly manslaughter at least.

Who in their right mind would do such a horrendous evil thing like that to such a beautiful creature? My daughter is 4, and I couldn’t even dream on my worst day in the world even imagine the thought of doing something like this.

The problem here is with divorce and child-support law that essentially reduces many men to being slaves to their ex-wives and children.

It's one thing to see yourself as a provider that's part of a family.

It's another to see yourself as beast of burden and getting little back in return -- no love, minimal family time, nothing.

Sure, the guy's a monster, but sometimes our own system creates monsters.

Correct.

Trajectory calculations can be done from the point of impact to determine whether somebody fell or was pushed.

One of the chapters in this very interesting book deals with expert testimony on this very point - although in that case it was whether the man jumped or fell.

I think if you or I were sitting on death row, we might want to live. I think that is why so many felons on death row fight their death penalty.

From the link...
He was tried...the biggest problem was deciding which murder conviction he should receive.

Brown was tried three years ago, but a mistrial was declared after a jury deadlocked on the severity of the crime. Some jurors favored a first-degree murder conviction, while others voted for second-degree murder or manslaughter.
