The Congressional Budget Office estimates that a three-cent tax would generate $24 billion over the next four years, and proponents of the tax argued before the committee that it would lower consumption of sugary drinks and improve Americans' overall health.

sounds like the soda industry didn’t ante up their extortion money this quarter..... uh oh....
I drink Coke I am not fat. Why tax everyone when the people overweight could cut back on what they drink and actually exercise instead of plopping down in front the TV.
The list, ping
So could raising the gasoline tax by $5.00 a gallon because we would likely have to walk a lot more...but just because something “might” happen, does not mean it should happen.
Obamacare is not about healthcare, it is really about finding new ways to tax various groups in the name of “preventvie health”.
Outright farce.
Let’s tax earwax while we’re at it.
That’ll buy healthcare for all of us, sho nuff’.
How about a dress size tax?
Burger tax?
French fry tax?
Milk shaketax?
Beef Jerky tax?
Hot dog tax?
Taco tax?
Beer tax?
Extra helping surcharges?
Just a matter of time folks...
Geez I’m going to be up to my ears in taxes...I guess Monday thru Thursday I work for the Gov’t and Friday I get to keep my earnings?? Taxing my Soda’s..my Beer...what’s next??
Okay all you anti smoking freeper fanatics, your turn.....
Ameria = a nation where most people when given a choice, would elect someone like Obama.
What’s up with that?
Add a bathroom tax, here in Mexico you pay 4 pesos..if you EAT more, that means we’re flushing more, so make ‘em pay and charge everyone that uses public bathrooms...we do in Mexico.
You left out Sex tax (for preventing STD’s and unwanted pregnancies). Speaking of which, I wonder if abortion is taxed.
Why not just pass a donut tax and get all the police against this?
These politicians are such hypocrites. They use protectionism to keep US sugar prices artificially high, so us, the consumers, wind up paying more for sugar and good that use sugar in them. They subsidize the US sugar industry with ourtax dollars.
They then want to tax us again for actually buying products that contain sugar in them.
One Congressional hand up it’s own a$$, the other one punching itself in the face. They are insane.
We are going to tax carbon and sell credits that dont exist.
It doesnt matter to me if he taxes soda’s I can drink tea.
This is just another way to rip off the American people.
Kinda like an “income tax” discourages income?
Kinda like a “business tax” kills off businesses?
Kinda like a “sales tax” lowers sales?
More “Yes we can” and “hope and change”.....pathetic.
I am not sure if this is the way to go, but...the number of obese kids is shocking. As a college professor, I see more than my share of ‘em. When you talk to some of them, they swear up and down they eat right and try to exercise. My gut tells me its not just eating habits at work here. Something is very wrong with these kids—not sure if its genetic, behavioral or something in the food supply. Or perhaps all of the above.
“I am not sure if this is the way to go, but...the number of obese kids is shocking.”
Seems to be regional too. Much more pronounced in certain areas of the country.
I wonder how Pepsi feels about this, since they went so far as to change their logo to mimic the big 0’s.
I am obese and have been all my life. I am also the mom of 3 normal sized children. Just from my own experience, I think many obese people eat the wrong foods for their body. The the bigger you get, the harder it is to exercise. It’s a nasty cycle.
I also think there are reasons for obesity that just are not known yet. Last year some scientists say a virus may be to blame sometimes. It can also be some connection in the endocrine system that we just haven’t figured out yet. fifty years from now we are going to look at taxing ‘sin’ foods as something that was just so off the mark.
Until science gives us better answers, though, the best way we have to battle this disease is diet and exercise. It won’t work for everyone as effectively, but right now it’s all we have.
I’ve posted this elsewhere, but Frieden has a long history of this sort of thing. When he was NYC health commissioner, he made it *mandatory* for doctors to report their diabetic patients’ blood glucose results to the city Department of Health. The city would then track the patient’s ongoing status, and contact them if it appeared said patients were apparently not following the proper diet/medication/etc. plan.
Here’s some more about Dr. Frieden:

The guy fits right in with 0bama’s health care proposals. Yeesh!
And they're going to do what exactly with all that money?
This (like all fast food taxes) won't affect the elites, who get their calories from French pastries and a good Sauterne at a swank restaurant. And buy their untaxed calories at Whole Foods.
Obesity?
They are going about this all wrong.
Soda bubbles = CO2. Carbon dioxide. We belch tons of it chugging Pepsi (or Coke). Diet or Sugared. It makes no difference.
We are killing our planet to enrich the Soda Executives!
Strip them of pay and bonuses.
Put them down.
SAVE THE PLANET.
(Look for my next rant on the evils of Beer).
If they taxed stupidity in D.C., all of those fools would be destitute.
Some food for thought:
http://www.truehealth.org/obesity.html
As I said, this should be seriously studied to find out the real cause. Thirty years ago, almost no one was obese. Even the “fat” kids back then would simply be considered slightly overweight today. As a kid, I ate tons of sugary/fatty crap and stayed rail thin. Our daughter is not obese, but she is overweight even though my wife and I are thin and we watch the family diet closely. I am afraid that she will get obese after she is out on her own.
I’ll bet those kids’ thumbs are well developed.
These children are in WAAY over their heads....
That’s like saying a Tax on Stupidity will eliminate the Democrat Party.
Hope springs eternal.
if they are so concerned, why not just tax fat PEOPLE instead??? it's like outlawing guns instead of jailing criminals, taxing soda is just plain 0bama...
Surely less pop will be produced as a result. Leaving only fat people, who will be gouged and drink it anyway. With the largest impact falling on the poor, as always.

I think your right. Its more than just diet and exercise. I don’t think anyone has gotten past the diet and exercise theory to actually study this though.
Oh yeah that will do it! NOT! Holy cow are these people that stupid? All a tax will do is get them to buy less soap and more food and soda, DUH!
I have no problem with them levying a tax against McD’s Taco Bell, etc. I never eat at any of those places ever.
Now there’s an idea! Everyone with an IQ under 100 owes $X! Guess I shouldn’t give them ideas, huh!

This is actually a very active area of research.
There are a number of factors going on here. Kids are less active. Lower activity means fewer calories burned, and higher probability of gaining weight.
Once the weight starts to go up, the metabolism changes. It then becomes very difficult to lose weight. Every time one tries to cut back, the body starts to send all kinds of signals that it’s starving.

I used to ride a bike to my friends house and play ball till it got dark. Than my mom would call me in.
Now I just work all day for the privelege of the gubmint to tell me what to eat, drink or smoke.
The nanny state is a nightmare that would even scare Freddy Krueger.
Obama could quit smoking too!
He should really mind his own damn business!
I’ll drink what I please!
Yep, I drink diet coke and am considered mildly obese although I know many much larger than I. I was rail-thin until I hit about 23-24 years old, then put on about 100-120 pounds in 15 years, much of that relatively quickly after turning 25. No change to diet or activity level - just a metabolism slowdown. It was like a switch in my body was flipped. Don’t get me wrong, I love to eat. I drink diet coke because I love it. I can’t drink the sugary sodas at all. SO as much of that as I drink is 140-160 calories that I am avoiding per can by drinking DC. I can only imagine how much more I’d weigh if I drank regular Coke. My oldest daughter is slightly overweight and doesn’t eat much at all - not like I did as a kid. My wife is not fat, so I think genetics may play a role, or there is something else we just don’t know about.
All I have to say is what we all heard before:
I don’t drink soda, so why should I care? Let them tax it.
Thanks for the interesting link. It makes a lot of sense! Best of luck to your daughter.
It’s no coincidence that schadenfreude is a German word.
I’m sure all of the jews rounded up in concentration camps felt a little bit of joy when their neighbors who looked away while they were rounded up came to join the misery.
