I did start Winter’s Tale once, I confess. It was different from the other two novels, so I didn’t stay at it. I will, however, and I appreciate the reminder.

Memoirs from the Antproof Case is magnificent...though perhaps in the end one of the saddest things I have ever read.

I’m just finishing Angels of Destruction by Keith Donohue.

I really like it. It even briefly mentions the weather underground!

Well written and engaging. i’ll read more of his books.

Rain Gods - James Lee Burke - Character driven modern West mystery, moves slow, great book

Beat the Reaper - Josh Bazell - Hitman becomes a doctor, one of the better written flashback books I've read, moves fast

Gone Tomorrow - Lee Child - Typical Reacher, good story, moves fast

The Cold Dish - Craig Johnson - Sheriff story set in modern west, well-plotted, character-driven, medium read.

Bloodthirsty - Marshall Karp - I'm a sucker for smart-aleck detective books, this is better than the Elvis Cole books of Robert Crais, good plot, good characters, fast-moving

Re Gladwell’s Outliers, I really liked the first part of the book. In fact it was so good I gave it to four graduates this June. He writes very well. No surprise, he works for the New Yorker. And I had found his earlier book, The Tipping Point, to be a good read.

I learned my lesson. I had only read the first half of Outliers. He must have run out of good examples because he talks about the family rivalries among white settlers in Appalachia. From that and one small study he concludes that southern men are aggressive and rude. He writes well and his notions about the 10,000 hour rule and timing are worthwhile but he’s clearly a flaming liberal.

Highly recommend reading the first half of his book but get it from the library.
