Ohio Senator George Voinovich says that the GOP is "being taken over by southerners," the Columbus Dispatch reports.
In an interview with with the paper, Voinovich said shrinking demographics and southern senators are alienating his conservative constituents. He cites Republican Senators Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn as the GOP's biggest problem.
"We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It's the southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, 'These people, they're southerners. The party's being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?'," Voinovich said.
Salon notes that Voinovich is not the sole Republican speaking out against the regional isolation. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty acknowledged last year that the Republicans were facing increasingly difficult competition in large parts of the country, including Voinovich's Ohio.
"We cannot be a majority governing party when we essentially cannot compete in the Northeast, we are losing our ability to compete in Great Lakes states, we cannot compete on the West Coast, we are increasingly in danger of competing in the mid-Atlantic states, and the Democrats are now winning some of the Western states," Pawlenty said.
Not stopping at the GOP's biggest problem, Voinovich says President Obama's biggest problem is "two words: Nancy Pelosi."
F.O., talentless yankee fop.
Mr. Voinovich. The only thing that’s been “taken over” are
your views.
Let me check with my Republican California senators and see what they say.
Maybe the GOP should stop tossing good northern republicans overboard.
And your problem with that is?
Has Ohio Senator George Voinovich ever spent much time in southeastern Ohio?
If he had, then he would know what “Southern” has to do with that part of Ohio.
I knew there was something fishy about that Sarah Palin. She’s a southerner!... or, uhh wait.
We’re not taking over.
We’re just the designated drivers for a GOP that is drunk on Socialism and Power.
Don’t drink and vote and you can have your keys back, Moron
The GOP version of Biden. The Senate is a freak show.
The GOP has a leader?
It think it would be more apt to say that the rest of the country is taken over by the looney left, and the South is the last bastion...etc, etc etc.
Dear George,
Bigoted much?
Signed,
A conservative Yankee
Yes, well, I live in Alaska, too, but am bond fide ‘daughter of the south.;-)
New England is where political ideologies go to die.
2008 was a re-alignment. The Rockefeller Republicans are to go extinct.
Where conservatives are now are the fastest growing parts of the country. It is time for conservatives to take over the Republican Party.
These guys know the historical pattern, and they don’t like it. They would rather lose every election being Rockefellers than win elections being southern conservatives.
Northern GOP = RINO liberals on the left track.
And that is putting it nicely.
Senator George Voinovich, (PW)pantywaist, Ohio.
To George V
Q..What killed the Republican party in this state ?
A..PEOPLE LIKE YOU. Get lost you moron !
Dear Senator Voinovich, you think southerners
are bad, wait till the Alaskans take over.
“He cites Republican Senators Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn as the GOP’s biggest problem.”
Grunthor wants the rest of the Gutless Old Pantywaists to be MORE like Demint and Coburn!
Let me get this straight. Baby boomers are moving to the south because of weather and taxes and states that have no income tax. Northern states are crying in their beer because they are losing influence. Hummmmmm. Wonder if there is a connection?
Well this Connecticut Yankee says that a damn site better class of folks than the trash that's taken over the democrat party. It's a good thing Harry Truman and Scoop Jackson didn't have to live to see this.
“good northern republicans”
Like Arlen Spectre?
If Voinovich is the only type of Republican we can expect from the North, I’d rather permanently be a minority party.
No. Like Tim Walberg or Rosanna Pulido.
These current map drawings with America in the north are unfair after north=top and top=King right? so we should draw the map with the southern hemisphere on top and then Palin is from the South.
I did see a map with this philosophy behind it a few years ago. It was just plain dumb.
sw
THAT is for DAMN sure!
Thanks for the laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“No.”
Good enough for me. I believe as you appear to that we can have GOP elected in the north and west without those candidates having to be a slightly less commie version of the Democrats.
He says that like it’s a bad thing...
Whether Oklahoma counts as Southern or Midwestern seems to depend on whom you ask--the original settlers (not counting the Indians, many of which had been involuntarily relocated there from elsewhere) were from all the surrounding states as well as from further afield. Lots of Kansans.
Voinovich ought to move to North Carolina. It’s getting hard to find any southerners around here.
“Specter was born in Wichita, which is in the southern part of Kansas.”
Did he grow up there? I got a cousin that was born in Germany, but she hates bratwurst and sauerkraut.
In sore need of term limits.
Don't say that!
We go enough damn Yankees down here already.
Let me fix it:
Attention Yankees, the south sucks, it's hot, rainy and we get hurricanes!
Our woman are ugly, all of us smell bad and we eat terrible completely unpalatable food!
Stay home!
And the dems are taken over by: transvestites, economic illiterates, metrosexuals, mal-do-wells, illegal immigrants, tax evaders, Teddy the swimmer, Barney the Banking Queen, Well-preserverved Pelosi, etc.
I’ll take the southerners any time.
By the way, I’m originally from the south and will match any of the Obamaloon cabinet for accomplishments any time.
I say thank God the Southerners are taking over the GOP. As an Ohioan, I wish someone with some Southern conservative views would take your senate seat, you dagum RINO.
Good, you get it...
***They get on TV and go ‘errrr, errrrr.’ People hear them and say, ‘These people, they’re southerners.***
And a former senator gets on TV and goes ‘ummm, ummm’ and us southerners say, ‘he’s a lyin’ Chicago thug.’
I don't know if there is any difference between Wichita cuisine and Russell cuisine.
“Whether Oklahoma counts as Southern or Midwestern seems to depend on whom you ask—the original settlers (not counting the Indians, many of which had been involuntarily relocated there from elsewhere) were from all the surrounding states as well as from further afield. Lots of Kansans.”
Correct and Vice-Versa. Northern Oklahoma has a shared cultural and Economic bond with Kansas, especially Wichita.
I live in Wichita and a good number of people here have roots or branches in Southern Oklahoma. More so than they typically do with Missouri or Nebraska. Colorado, for all purposes is basically considered ‘another country’ in these parts.
Tulsa and Wichita also have many connections, a friendly rivalry and common bonds.
Oklahoma is as much Midwestern as it is Southern. To compare it to South Carolina is disingenuous.
Not hardly.....we’ve always been for less government and for them to stay out of our business......
Wasn’t he a Democrat convert anyway?
Bob Dole was also from Russell.
Comparing Russell to Wichita is like comparing Mayberry to Cincinnati.
‘Wichita Cuisine’, well... We have a few local favorites, places you definitely can’t find anywhere else, but we are mainly a good cross-section of Americana as far as ‘cuisine’ is concerned. Somewhat Generic with a few PLEASANT surprises.
I hope George Voinovich will re-member...
...Southern man don’t need him around, anyhow!
I meant Northern Oklahoma, sorry.
